We love SDGVA! The school celebrates diversity, cultivates a culture of inclusion and acceptance and is academically solid. The staff is absolutely amazing and demonstrate a true intent to partner with parents to ensure kids feel loved and supported. Our kids have attended SDGVA the last 4 years and we have been incredibly impressed by the level of commitment and dedication of their teachers -they are thriving at this school.
We absolutely love the teachers and administration at SDGVA. In addition to that we have made so many close friends with other parents during our girls' years there. Our kids are excited to go to school each day and the small class sizes have really helped them thrive, learn and continue to grow. We have one daughter in 4th grade and one in 7th. I wish they had a high school :)
Great school for my kids, the teachers are wonderful and you can really tell that they want to be there and that they care about the kids there. The principal is grade A top notch. She is a wonderful director and knows how to run the school I am so lucky to let my kids go there. It is truly the best school I have found in San Diego. The way the teach my kids math is so awesome I am learning all new ways myself. It is so awesome to be a part of this school, thank you so much
SDGVA contacted us at the beginning of September and said that our child was accepted. Even though we had initially been excited about putting our daughter on the waiting list at SDGVA, we were a bit hesitant after hearing the news about the former CEO s abrupt departure in August. But, as the educational program that SDGVA offers seemed to be everything I and my husband could ask for our child, I could not resist taking the offer despite the news regarding the CEO. My husband and I decided to take a chance and send our child to SDGVA, knowing that if we and our child did not like the school after all then she could always return to the local public school. OK, finally my review starts from here: Three months in, and so far I LOVE THIS SCHOOL and MY CHILD LOVES THIS SCHOOL! Here are a few things that set SDGVA apart from many other schools: It s a small school with a strong focus on the fundamentals of writing, reading and mathematics PLUS science and technology (STEAM program). Due to a fairly small student-to-teacher ratio, you could not ask for a more dedicated, nearly one-on-one attention like the students receive from the teachers and staff at SDGVA at many crowded public schools. I like the fact that SDGVA has chosen to have the students wear uniforms. I feel that it helps to create a sense of sameness of group rather than a focus on being separate, different and individual when dressing distinctly. My belief is when students put on the uniform it puts them in the mental mindset of being a student, rather than the converse: street /casual clothes put one in the mindset of, well, being casual. Tae Kwon Do martial arts class is available to all students once a week. Not only good exercise, but also teaches such attributes as: discipline, respect, coordination and self-defense, to name a few. AM/PM programs are run by school staff and teachers. Students can receive assistance with their homework generally from their own class teacher! As well as getting additional technology practice and study from the schools IT director. I also love the technology-centered communication methods they use: primarily e-mail, texting and app-based messaging . It makes contacting, or being contacted by them, nearly instant. Communicating to the main office or the teachers is a snap. You can download an app called ClassDoJo , which connects parents and classroom, and also connects with teacher and principal as well. For example, my child is in Miss Adair s class. She is such a devoted, caring top-notch teacher. She uploads a very short class video or pix every day to show parents that how children are doing and what and how they are teaching to children. I m very pleased and feel safe to see almost live-video and pix of how my child is doing in her class. I can also text her and ask my concerns or questions about my child. The CEO/Provost Ms. Kane is very open and friendly, she is always around students in the morning and afternoon, knows all students by name and parent/guardian s face by 2nd week. I honestly don t see any sense of the schools focus having changed (due to change in CEO). They are very student centered and seem to make their decisions with the student s best interest and safety in mind first. Existing teachers have very strong mind-set in focusing on student s success in both academically and mentally. This school operates like a small school, and I feel that parents and school are well-connected and communication is great. I feel like I am sending my child to a good private school. Even though it has been only a couple of months, but I see that my child is already showing academic improvement in her reading, writing and mathematics skills. In addition, I can also tell that she is gaining confidence as well, and am pleased that she is thriving and safe there, and moreover nothing makes me happy to hear from her every morning that I can not wait to go to school! . I cannot say enough good things about this school. There is no chance to pull my child out of this school.
Curious why their lottery priority criteria disfavors the local zip codes. Also, odd for an academy called global vision that no second language is offered.
UPDATE (2016): My review below (unedited) is absolutely how I felt about SDGVA 3 years ago. But something has changed at the school. The board is amateur and unprofessional. They are making decisions that affect the children and the staff and I do not trust that board with my children's welfare. Several teachers and administrators have left. I believe in the educational paradigm and I truly hope that the school can get through this and thrive. But right now, I am sad to say that it is no longer the right place for my family.
PREVIOUS REVIEW (2013):
My child is thriving at San Diego Global Vision Academy! The teachers are amazing and go above and beyond to help students and families succeed. The school is small, so children get individualized attention, but traditional, so children are taught respect and responsibility. This approach may not be for everyone, but I can't imagine a better school for my child. The school is extremely diverse, so children are taught tolerance and cultural sensitivity. They are a reading and writing based school and have weekly Tae Kwan Do as a part of their curriculum. The after school program is run by the classroom teachers, so your child can get extra help with homework from a teacher. The staff is amazing and the communication is great. I can't say enough good things about this school. We love it!
My daughter loves this school!! No complaints there but office people have become rude and moody. Spoke with one staff member was very polite then in person walked in with same information and was requested and questioned to bring proof and extra documents that I wasn t ask nor told by first staff member. Like if I was lying or something. Felt like they were being extra for no reason.
I took my daughter out of a school that was not accommodating her needs. And I think back as wish I would have started her off at SDGVA as a Kindergartner. The Principal is the most hands on with your child. She holds the students accountable for being responsible in all areas of their lives. This has helped my child not only become a more successful student, but is aiding in her overall success as a responsible young person. I believe SDGVA has a Unity within its Staff that is Extremely Hard to come by these days. They are equipping its students with all the skills and tools needed to become success human beings. I am forever grateful for my childs 5th grade teacher Mrs. Banner who is AMAZING. She demonstrates a passion toward her students that I remember teachers having when I was in school. Kudos to the Entire Staff at SDGVA. Continue the Great Work that you are doing.
