Understaffed ...Has a beautiful veneer with a ugly underbelly. After all the savings were burned through, then the nastiness really came through. The telephone would be on the floor, one day was told the phone was under the mattress?!, or most of the time it was out of reach. For three days in a row, Mom could only hear a few words. Called back the unit clerk to ask if the hearing aids needed new batteries. As I am on the phone with her she laughs and says "Oh, she's trying to get out the door. She says she needs to get to Erie Audiology to get the hearing aids fixed." I asked "Who are you talking about?" She laughs and says "Your Mother!" I called Erie Audiology after that. Mom had a very large deposit of wax in the ears and the aids were not maintained properly. Another example of nasty is for Mother's Day I sent from an established Erie florist a red, white , and pink high end bouquet with an accompanying festive balloon. My sister and brother-in -law were there in person. The flowers were delivered Thursday afternoon. They arrived on Saturday morning to visit. I called prepared to hear how gorgeous the bouquet was. My sister gave me instead a tongue lashing about how Mom could fall on the dead petals all over the floor. I asked "What are you talking about?" She told me to stop sending flowers (I would do a bouquet once a week to Mom.) I asked if there was a balloon--no balloon! Alright...I ask her "Exactly what color are these flowers?" She replies"Purple!!" Called and complained to admin...they put the ball in the florist's court. Called the florist who has been in business for decades. They couldn't believe the home would be that tacky, Ordered and paid for a duplicate bouquet and balloon and had it delivered as soon as possible...Monday, so Mom would at least have something.
At the end she died with MRSA, one urinary tract infection after another to the point of hallucinating from the sepsis, and as a special touch...pneumonia...AND 84 pounds! Her stay there was the worst days of my life.
