I took a private lesson at Root Division from Robert Minervini. Rob is a fantastic teacher and I learnt a lot during the session. I wish I had found this site long time back. Absolutely recommend this if you are ever in SF!

Root Division is a fantastic resource in San Francisco. I recently took Grant Writing for Artists, an online workshop taught by Executive Director Michelle Mansour, MFA. The writing strategies taught in the workshop are really helping me clarify my funding proposals. We had a small enough group for everyone to interact with the instructor, who was super organized. I highly recommend trying a Root Division course.

I really enjoyed the beginners drawing class I took at Root Division. For three hours a week I was in an oasis away from the usual pressures of life, learning the basics drawing with a great teacher and an interesting set of classmates, while we sipped wine and beer. As someone who had never taken any art classes before it was quite astounding to be able to draw recognizable portraits and still life renditions by the end of the course.

About Root Division: Art and Art Education

Root Division: Art and Art Education

Root Division is a non-profit organization that has been connecting creativity and community through a dynamic ecosystem of arts education, exhibitions, and studios since 2002. The organization was founded as a sustainable arts hub with the aim of providing artists with affordable studio space, exhibition opportunities, and access to resources that would help them grow their careers.

The mission of Root Division is to empower artists, promote community service through the arts, and foster cultural equity in San Francisco. The organization achieves this by offering a range of programs that cater to artists at different stages in their careers. These programs include art classes for adults and youth, artist residencies, exhibitions featuring emerging artists from diverse backgrounds, professional development workshops for artists looking to advance their careers.

One of the unique aspects of Root Division's programming is its commitment to fostering cultural equity in San Francisco. This means that the organization actively seeks out underrepresented communities in the city and provides them with access to resources they might not otherwise have had. For example, Root Division offers free art classes for low-income youth who might not have had access to art education otherwise.

Another way Root Division promotes cultural equity is by hosting exhibitions featuring emerging artists from diverse backgrounds. By showcasing these artists' work in its gallery space located at 1131 Mission Street in San Francisco's SOMA district - one of the most vibrant neighborhoods for contemporary art - Root Division helps these artists gain exposure while also promoting diversity within the local arts scene.

In addition to its commitment to promoting cultural equity through its programming initiatives, Root Division also operates an affordable studio program that provides working space for over 30 Bay Area-based visual artists. These studios are located on-site at 1131 Mission Street alongside other creative spaces such as classrooms and exhibition galleries.

Root Division's studio program offers affordable rent rates compared with other commercial spaces available on the market today; this makes it possible for emerging or mid-career visual artist residents who may be struggling financially but still need dedicated workspace where they can create new works without worrying about high overhead costs associated with renting traditional commercial spaces elsewhere around town or beyond city limits.

Overall if you're looking for an innovative non-profit organization committed towards empowering local communities through creative expression then look no further than Root Divison: Art & Art Education!
