Roederer Estate: A Sparkling Wine Experience Like No Other
Roederer Estate is a California-based winery that has been producing sparkling wines in the Anderson Valley since its inception. The winery is the California outpost of Champagne Louis Roederer, a renowned French champagne house that has been producing some of the world's finest champagnes for over two centuries.
The story of Roederer Estate began in 1982 when Jean-Claude Rouzaud, then president of Champagne Louis Roederer, visited Mendocino County and was struck by the similarities between the region's climate and soil to those found in Champagne. He saw an opportunity to create a new world-class sparkling wine using traditional French methods and techniques.
Rouzaud purchased land in Anderson Valley and began planting vineyards with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes, which are used to make their signature Brut NV. The first vintage was released in 1988, and since then, Roederer Estate has become one of California's most respected producers of sparkling wine.
What sets Roederer Estate apart from other wineries is their commitment to quality at every stage of production. They use only estate-grown grapes from their own vineyards, which allows them complete control over the entire process from grape to bottle. The grapes are hand-harvested at night when they are cool to preserve their delicate flavors and aromas.
Once harvested, the grapes are gently pressed using traditional Coquard presses imported from France. This method ensures that only the highest quality juice is extracted while minimizing oxidation and preserving freshness.
The juice is then fermented in stainless steel tanks before being blended with reserve wines aged up to four years in oak barrels. This blending process adds complexity and depth to the final product while maintaining consistency year after year.
After blending, the wine undergoes secondary fermentation in individual bottles where it ages on its lees for a minimum of two years. This extended aging process gives the wine its signature creamy texture and delicate bubbles.
Roederer Estate produces several different sparkling wines, including their Brut NV, Brut Rosé, L'Ermitage Brut, and L'Ermitage Rosé. Each wine has its own unique flavor profile and is crafted to showcase the best qualities of the grapes used.
Their flagship wine, the Brut NV, is a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes that are aged for a minimum of two years on their lees. It has a bright acidity with notes of green apple and citrus fruits balanced by a creamy texture and long finish.
The L'Ermitage line represents Roederer Estate's top-tier offerings. These wines are made from only the highest quality grapes selected from specific vineyard blocks on their estate. The L'Ermitage Brut is aged for at least four years on its lees before being released while the L'Ermitage Rosé is aged for three years.
In addition to producing exceptional sparkling wines, Roederer Estate also places great importance on sustainability in their vineyards. They use cover crops between rows to promote soil health and reduce erosion while minimizing pesticide use through integrated pest management practices.
Overall, Roederer Estate offers a sparkling wine experience like no other in California. Their commitment to quality at every stage of production results in wines that are consistently excellent year after year. Whether you're looking for an everyday sparkler or something special for a celebration, Roederer Estate has something to offer every palate.
