After a brain haemorrhage I came left paralyzed on the stretcher with the ambulance to Heliomare at the end of August. At the end of October I was able to walk to the car in the parking lot to go home. What a great institute and what a lovely skilled employees. The same day that I arrived, physio was already started. In the previous three weeks in the hospital I had only hung in a wheelchair and now I was immediately helped in the exercise room to get up and try to take steps again. Hard work and sometimes frustrating. I was training for the Dam-to-Dam run and then suddenly you have to learn to walk in the bridge again. But it worked; I soon no longer needed a wheelchair and no longer a stick and I walked "loosely" to my appointments at the building.
I was lucky that I was there in the summer, that the weather was very nice and that the beach is very close. So I practiced a lot on the beach and also regularly in the evening drinking coffee in a beach pavilion. On a very nice day we went with the entire department through the dunes towards the sea, with wheelchair users and all ..
Someone writes elsewhere that the food was "seriously bad", but that is not my experience. "In the morning you already got the menu in front of you and you could choose what you would like to eat in the evening. Something for everyone, my favorite was the mini-Indian rice table, but otherwise everything was very good to eat, just fine At one point pizza was ordered, really at a pizzeria, so that tasted great, and then once a month fries day, delicious!
No matter how sad it sometimes was, I still remember my Helioma time with great pleasure. It felt like a warm bath (yes there is also a heated pool) with all lovely people who are really there for you to get you back on track as quickly and effectively as possible. Of course you have to do something about it yourself, but everything is aimed at getting the client back on his own as much as possible and returning his autonomy. In my case that worked out very well and I am soooo grateful to everyone, the ladies of the physiotherapy and occupational therapy (Selena and Maartje and Naseema, the entire sport and fitness department (for cycling in the dunes, great when that worked again and again) swimming (mary) of course I cannot forget the 3A nurses for their endless help.
