Haven't been here in 10 years. Forgot how many runs they had. Pretty good snow this year and they have extensive snow making. No wait in lift lines on week days and never over 5 minutes Valentine's weekend.

We spent Spring Break in Red River and had a good time. Lots of skiing/snow boarding with our family and eating out every night was nice. The food in the area was all good and we really liked Capo's. The only reason it was a three star is because some of the ski lift first aide team and personnel were very rude. One incident was extremely infuriating. The ski lodge employs workers from other counties that lack some communication and understanding skills. On our last day at the end of the day(of course) my wife got hurt. Riding the lift by the ski lodge to the mild slope a small child fell in the center of the lift. The crew at the top just watched the child struggle as my wife's chair approached. She was seated in the middle of three and when they exited the chair she tried to move around the fallen child. In doing so with three of them coming off the chair she fell as well. When she fell the chair actually hit her board and twisted her knee. She then pulled herself aside and made a comment to a first aide attendant, that happen to be at the top of the lift , they should have cleared the child or stopped the chairs. The attendants response was "well are you hurt." My wife kinda stunned replied they should have done something to clear the area for safety. Again the first aide responder said "are you hurt" as if your not move along. When my wife and I met up she told me the story and said her knee did hurt from the incident but the young girl was so rude she just moved on. But at most injuries go the next day tells the tell. My wife woke up the next morning in pain and for the next several weeks had to favor her leg before recovering. We are an avid outdoor and gym family and she had to lay off of many activities till her leg healed. Our family has been to six different ski towns in Colorado and New Mexico and hadn't had this kind of treatment by staff and its sad. Red River seemed like a really neat place.

I'm very big about writing reviews on my experiences rather they are good or bad. Red River Ski Area is AMAZING! I'm in my mid thirties and have never been skiing. I hate the cold, I hate the snow and I especially hate falling down! My husband who is a big skier talked me into at least trying to learn with an instructor. I gave in and agreed. The ski Instructor Bob was fantastic!! He was so patient with me and taught in a way that everything made sense. After only an hour I had the basics down!! I couldn't believe it! They have a slope where the beginners learn it's called the "Magic Carpet" It has like an escalator that you stand on and it brings you to the top of the little hill which is great, that way you don't have to deal with the ski lift as well as trying to learn to ski for the first time. It's also perfect for children!
To my surprise I actually really loved skiing, I truly believe it was the staff at Red River Ski Area that made that possible for me. Everything from the rental of my ski equipment to my lesson was effortless! Everyone was soo friendly, Lenton the owner and Walt the GM was fantastic! They are so involved with the resort and making sure everyone is having fun it's really amazing! They even cheered me on as I came down the slope! I have already starting telling all my friends that I'm taking them there to learn how to ski, I believe in my heart there's NO better place to learn! I have only experienced the magic carpet hill and the bunny hill but my husband said the other slopes are awesome as well, they have something there for everyone! Thanks y'all for the experience of a life time!! I will definitely be spreading the word!! :)

The staff here is awesome. They went out of their way to help my young children. This was by far one of the best places we have been on vacation. It was not so crowded that you felt hurried all the time.

I am not a beginner snowboarder and therefore this is a ridiculous issue. The slopes getting off the lift are super short and steep causing boards to get caught if you take a second too long. I broke my bindings on the first run and the resort did nothing to help out, not even refund my ticket. Furthermore there is this absurd rule requiring riders to single strap their backpacks, this is an unnecessary hazard and definitely worst than wearing it as intended. Lastly, don t try to put a speaker in your backpack, there are rules against that too. Snow is hard pack because it s 85% man made. Save yourself the trip and go somewhere else.

The price may be cheap but you will encounter plenty of issues.

Best ski town in the west! I learned to ski at Red River in the 80s & my children have learned at Red River too! Ski school is phenomenal & we've had several fantastic instructors over the years.
We love that the town is easy to get around & nothing is far from the lifts. Very family friendly!
Summertime in Red River is pretty great too!

I love this mountain and town. I've lived here 13 years and have skied every one in New Mexico, but none more than Red River. The town is awesome. We stay at the Best Western River Edge and that place rocks. You walk to the main lift from any room with ski boots on. That's slope side if you ask me for a hundred bucks a night. You get free cooked to order breakfast and they let you bring your dog!!! My wife is a non skier. She passes the time during my ski days by walking the dog and relaxing by the river. We don't drink at bars but always eat out. Our favorite spot is Timbers. Once you park your car at the hotel, you never have to move it until you leave. Everything is walking distance. Stuff is relativity priced for as resort town, but not that bad at all. We always show up prepared or stock up at Taos Wal Mart before we get to town. Eat lunch at Shot Gun Willies. It's half the price of the "Lift House" and way better!
So the mountain is not the most challenging, but staying by that river, next to the lift makes up for it. We were there last weekend and got 14 inches of snow Friday into Saturday. I was first on the lift Friday and last on Saturday. So, again, that rocks. I think this place is an awesome kept secret.

In the summer, be sure to take the kids on the Ranger Tour at the top. Ranger Tim was great, the kids had fun and learned some things. Tim even threw in a good amount of history to keep the parents happy. Thanks Tim, we really enjoyed it.

Spent a week after Christmas 2015 and it was amazing. Kids had never skied and after a 1/2 day with RR instructor they were already on the Gold chairlift which was the perfect learning hill, both kids advanced up the hill throughout the week. They would also see their instructor on the "hill" and he would always stop and ask how they were doing and give pointers. Really a first class guy! The rest of the mountain provided plenty of challenge and 15/16 was a banner snow year. The lift operators were all very courteous and fun! We are returning this winter and will continue to count RR as one of our Favs! Keep up the great service!

We have skied Red River several times. This trip was a bit different, as we placed our 3 year old in her very first ski lessons. We were a little worried she wouldn't enjoy it, however wound up loving it. We even extended her lessons to two hour sessions and requested (and received) the same ski instructor for all her lessons (makes a big difference with a 3 year old). A big thank you to her ski instructor, Riley, as he did a wonderful job with her! If she would have had a different ski instructor, it's very possible she wouldn't have had such a positive experience. Thank you VERY much, Riley! You truly helped make our family ski trip a success!

One of the best ski towns around. You can definitely walk all over town to shop, eat, some condos offer door to ski lift just walk out the door and catch the lift. Tubing at night is a definite must, just make sure you get tickets 3 days ahead. We didn't and still go in the 2nd round, but if you want the 430pm round you have to move on it. Ski lessons should also be purchased 3 days ahead.

Red River is a prime ski area in New Mexico. Probably the most northern most in NM. Really fun mountain with a beer and food up top. The park has rails, boxes and jumps from beginner to pretty intermediate. Snow conditions change through out the day so that can vary. Overall great mountain and will be going back for a long time .

Incredible! The staff is great and there has been hardley anyone on the slopes. Still open during covid. Everything is groomed nicely, the snow is dry and packed without ice. Lots of long trails for all levels. My kids took lessons and the instructors were outstanding. I am going back again tomorrow.

So much fun! My family and I took the ski lift and went hiking and saw so many beautiful sites! This is for sure a must see and do when visiting Red River, you won't regret it! We came back a few days later to go tubing and man was that a blast!! My 6 year old loved it! And once she saw the ski lift, she wanted to go right back up and enjoy hiking again!

Great place! Super friendly, loved the folks at the Best Western! Mountain Treasures and Anchovies Pizza were the places to eat! Real friendly locals! Only thing preventing me from giving Red River a five was my ski instructor. Great skier but real impatient with me. I asked how long he'd been skiing & he said since childhood. Well, great! Some didn't learn til they were older dude...be a little more tolerant!

Update: that is okay about the ski instructor. I don't wish to get him in trouble. He probably did me a favor by telling me the truth even though I didn't like hearing it.

This is a very fun ski area in a nice little town with enough to do to have fun outside of skiing. As for the snow, the Silver Chair pod is a lot of fun and I have never found a crows back there. This resort has a great mix of groomed and ungroomed runs on the blue and black level that make the day fun and challenging.

Hidden treasure aerial park is nice for kids, but a bit pricey for what it is. Appointment is 1.5 hours but half an hour is getting geared up. So $50 for an hour. Ropes course finishes with a zip line. The guide was very nice and stayed over his shift to get us through it. Photographs are available for a fee from southern exposure photos.

We had a fantastic experience skiing and snowboarding this week! They are working very hard to keep everyone safe and follow covid guidelines. They had a smooth process and we can't wait to come back next month!
We purchased our tickets online a few days early. They had our lift passes ready for both days at will call. We were able to hop right on the lifts and start enjoying. Their staff were friendly and enforced mask or face coverings.

We came to the resort at about 5 on march 11 and we purchased a 3-4 day ski lift pass. We skied the first 2 days AFTER the 11th which were the 12th and 13th and we skipped the 14th, which gave us another day to ski on the 15th. When we got there on the 15th the lift administrator scanned our passes and they were denied. They told us to go to guest services and they said they couldn't do anything about it. It was a huge inconvenience and we don't think we're coming here again.

So i went to RR for the first time on valentines day weekend, felt in love with the place. But i had an accident up high in the trails, and I lost my board. I try looking for it, but it was impossible to find it, and I was in a lot of pain. So as soon as I could i went to the Lost and found, ski patrol, and the help desk, and as i thought no one had seen it or turned it in. I was so upset because that board meant a lot to me and i couldn't believe i had lost it. Since i am from Dallas, I had to go back home that weekend, but I kept calling every day to ask if anyone had found it. I was loosing hope of ever recuperating my board, and i stop calling. Until yesterday, 2 weeks after I had lost it, i got a text from WESLEY at Red River, and they told me they found it.

Thank You so much !!! Wesley, i know i was a pain, but you have been amazing help. I cant thank you enough and everyone who help. I am truly happy and so exited to go back.

Thank you all at RED RIVER / WESLEY-

Red River is the best! Purchased lift tickets the night before skiing and went to will-call in the parking lot where an employee greeted us and gave us an envelope that included our tickets, plastic connectors, receipt, and a trail map. The whole process took about 30 seconds. It was actually better than the normal ticket office or kiosks. Loved it! And there was about 4 inches of fresh powder to ski in on this perfect bluebird day.

I would advise everyone to make sure it s not going to rain that day or in our case a few sprinkles will close down everything. We spent almost $300 for sliding down one time and they weren t wanting to refund the money. They also told my kids that once they got to the top they would be taken down but once they got to the top they were told to walk back down instead. Manager Eric was so quick to take our money at the time it was sprinkling and fast to shut down and not refund the money, as a manager he shouldn t have sold the tickets if he was going to shut down.

Terrible experience! Do not stay at the Ponderosa Lodge. Management is rude and unprofessional. Had to call paramedics because hot tub (which was recently repaired) emitted chlorine gas and we had to evacuate. My 10 year old daughter had reaction to chemicals. The desk clerk agreed their was a problem and had to open doors and windows, until the manager showed up. Then she changed her tune. We had to leave at 9 pm and find another place to stay. The manager had no concern for my daughter's well being. They were trying to cover their rear. I called the owner and he gave the typical response of most business' these days. Rude and no accountability. The lift tickets office ripped us off and would not give a discount for bargain days at time of purchase. Had to insist on refund before we left and still got ripped off. To top it off, seems as though they are hiring foreigners (foreign visa, not illegals)over Americans to operate their lifts, which one was shut down for 20 minutes because of inept worker. Never going back.

Truly a great mountain! Very diverse terrain for any level of skiier! My friends had a great time on gold rush hill learning to snowboard while me and some other friends were able to ski more advanced runs such as cat skinner. Great management and overall efficency. The one thing I would love to see for next time I come would be a high speed quad because the platinum chair isn't exactly the fastest.

What an amazing venue for a wedding! The affordability of this venue with all the amenities that were available to us to host over 100 people for an outdoor wedding, dinner and dancing helped to make a "perfect" wedding for our daughter. Karen Kelly was fantastic with her communication with every little question that I asked for over a year preparing for that wonderful day on June 4. My husband and I highly recommend this venue and are so happy with the decision that we made to host our daughter's wedding at Red River Ski Area (Gold Rush Hill and The Main Chalet). Thank you, thank you, thank you for your wonderful hospitality and service. This place will always hold special memories for our entire family!

With all the numerous options out there to spend time with your family and friends skiing and enjoying what the mountains have to offer, I find myself coming back to Red River more and more. I grew up skiing and have always loved the sport. I have been to just about every resort in NM and CO, and I can tell you that there is absolutely NO better experience (especially for families or groups) than coming to the town of Red River and skiing at RRSA. Everything is convenient and first class.

Dec'20 was the second time visiting Red river with our family. Our two boys, 6&7 spent a few days in Ski school and were taken up to the top of the mountain and down a mix of blue and green slopes with their instructor. They are now officially better than their parents!

The instructors are great, and all the staff are incredibly friendly, definitely one of my favorite places to winter vacation. Most slopes are covered with snow blowers in case there isn't enough natural snow, but both times we went there was fresh natural snow to ski on.

The town is awesome and has always been but rented the chalet for a wedding reception OMG the service the lady Karen Kelly was horrible. Always going back on her word always trying to change things that were promised to us. We were promised access to a full kitchen... what we got was a dirty filthy ... I don't even know how to explain it but it was just plain disappointing. We are still in love with the town and will ALWAYS come back. But never again will we visit the chalet and never spend another cent with anything involved with the chalet. I have pictures and I will find a way to post them so people will have a heads up on this place. We will be contacting the new mexico health department as well.

About Red River Ski Area

Red River Ski Area: A Real Ski Resort Built By Miners, Not Developers

If you're looking for a real New Mexico winter or summer vacation, Red River Ski Area is the place to be. This ski resort is not a fabricated vision of what a great ski town should be. Instead, it's the real deal - built by miners, not developers.

Located in the heart of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in northern New Mexico, Red River Ski Area offers some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the state. With over 400 skiable acres and 57 trails ranging from beginner to expert level, there's something for everyone here.

But skiing isn't all that Red River has to offer. In fact, this resort is just as popular during the summer months as it is during winter. Visitors can enjoy hiking and mountain biking on over 20 miles of trails that wind through stunning alpine scenery.

One thing that sets Red River apart from other ski resorts is its history. The town was founded in 1895 by gold prospectors who were drawn to the area by rumors of rich deposits in nearby mountains. While they didn't find much gold, they did discover silver and copper - which led to a mining boom that lasted well into the early 20th century.

The miners who worked these mines were hardy individuals who knew how to survive in harsh conditions. They built their own homes and businesses using whatever materials they could find - including logs salvaged from nearby forests.

When skiing became popular in New Mexico during the mid-20th century, some enterprising locals decided to turn one of these old mining camps into a ski resort. And so Red River Ski Area was born.

Today, visitors can still see evidence of this mining heritage throughout town - from historic buildings like The Old Tymer's Cafe (which dates back to 1938) to abandoned mine shafts that dot nearby hillsides.

But while Red River may have started out as a rough-and-tumble mining camp turned ski resort, it has since evolved into something much more sophisticated. Today's visitors will find modern amenities like high-speed chairlifts and snowmaking equipment alongside charming lodges with crackling fireplaces and cozy hot tubs.

And despite its growth over the years, Red River has managed to maintain its small-town charm thanks largely to its friendly locals who are always happy to welcome visitors with open arms.

So whether you're looking for an adrenaline-pumping day on the slopes or a peaceful hike through pristine wilderness areas (or both!), make sure you add Red River Ski Area to your list of must-visit destinations when planning your next trip out west!
