This is the perfect boutique eyewear shop for the neighborhood. The staff is stylish and the decor is totally reflective of the Wicker Park/Bucktown 'hood. The doctors are beyond friendly and make you feel right at home. I have only purchased contacts, but they do have quite the selection of glasses for all styles and personalities. Plus, this is the first eye doctor I've been to who doesn't do that horrible "air puff" glaucoma test. Score!

Dr. Gifford and the staff are all really friendly and helpful! Started my appointment right on time, talked me through the process, helped me understand my insurance plan, even remembered my husband's name (who also gets his vision checkups here).
Dr. Gifford is amazing. He takes the time to explain the exam, your diagnosis, and prognosis. He also shows a genuine interest in the administration of insurance and what your options are in terms of out of pocket expense.

I've never thought too hard about what eye doctor to go to. In the past it was whatever random chain was closest to my house that took my insurance (LensCrafter, PearlVision, ETC.) They were fine. Eye Dr. isn't supposed to be a great experience, right? It's transactional at best.
After complaining about how uninspired my last visit was, my fiance started gushing about hers and told me to try her office. I took her up on it and skeptically made my next appointment at Red Eye. So glad I did. I never realized what I was missing until I had it. Everyone at Redeye is fantastically nice and attentive. Dr. Gifford is incredibly easy to talk to, does a great job explaining everything, and takes the time to actually get to know you. The whole staff seems to really care about you as a person instead of just you as a credit card payment. They even humored me with genuine opinions and encouragement as I belabored choosing the perfect pair of frames.... a process that left me wanting to go back to get a 2nd or 3rd pair as well.
2 visits later (1 for a screening, the other to pick out frames) and I've been completely spoiled. Now the thought of ever going back to one of those chains has switched from indifference to dread.
"Time After Time" played softly. Our eyes met. We shook hands as only two men can while Cyndi Lauper plays. Which is to say completely normally while enjoying some righteous 80s jams. He led me to a darkened room and gave me an eye exam. It was professional, thorough, and as enjoyable as an eye exam can be. Highly recommend.
Oh, also, their contact prices are the same or cheaper than online stores. So, you know, there's that.
As my 12 year old said, "The optometrist is my favorite doctor!" She summed it up perfectly! The staff, Dr. Gifford & the eyewear collection combine for a great experience. I've been seeing Dr. Gifford for 15 years now, and I appreciate the time he spends with us. We travel in from Wheaton each year to get our vision checked and pick out cool new glasses. I appreciate the considerations for COVID as well. I highly recommend Red Eye!

I just wanted to post a quick review of this outstanding business. I came here for my annual vision exam, and I saw Dr. Kohn. As many other reviewers posted, Dr. Kohn is very thorough, very patient, caring, and does a fantastic job in prescribing the best lenses for you.
I was very frustrated with my previous prescription, so I had high expectations. Dr. Kohn exceeded my expectations, and I am now happily wearing the right lenses for my condition.
I'd also like to add that both Dr. Kohn and Dr. Gifford are actively engaged in altruist work in countries such as Haiti and Honduras, where they bring their work and expertise to help those in greater need.
I've been going to Dr. Gifford for about a decade. He's a fantastic ophthalmologist and an all around great guy.

My husband chose to change the lenses in his existing glasses, but is quite unhappy. He wears bifocals and asked to leave the line exactly as it was in his old pair. The glasses he received have a higher line that interferes with distance vision. Gave him a headache, could not wear the glasses.
We had to go back to have the glasses changed. The good new is that they were willing to make the correction. Still a bit of a pain because the should have listened the first time

Highly recommend this place. I told Dr. Kohn that I was a bit nervous for the comprehensive exam (especially the dilating drops) and he couldn't have been more reassuring. He explained everything that he was doing in great detail and made sure I was comfortable the entire time. Overall great experience!
I was very displeased at first because I called and tried to obtain my contacts prescription for about 2 months and they kept saying that they would fax it over and when they finally did it wasn t for my contacts at all it was for glasses! I was super angry when I realized I was ready to buy contacts and again had no prescription! Today I finally decided to just go there, the lady (wish I knew her name) helped me right away, was extremely professional and nice, apologized multiple times and gave me both prescriptions in a matter of seconds along with a free pair of trial contacts and solution! I couldn t me more satisfied with how everything turned out! The definitely receive 5 stars from me. All it takes is one person that can change everything because before I went there today I was pretty angry.
I've been going to Dr Andrew Kohn for five years and although I only see him once a year for my annual eye exam, every time I see him and his staff they remember me as a friend and give me a wonderful eye care experience. Would highly recommend checking them out.

I'm not much of a reviewer but I know what I like and I like this place. The wife and I have been going here for a long time. We had an insurance change a couple of years ago and had to go somewhere. Needless to say, our experience with other optometrists left a lot to be desired. Glad to be back with Matt and hoping to continue to do so for the foreseeable future. You can't wrong with Red Eye.

This is now the 2nd time I have visited Red Eye and once again had an outstanding experience. From being greeted by the receptionist to getting my eye exam with Dr. Gifford it was a very pleasant experience. Detailed explanations and very knowledgeable. All of my Insurance questions were answered promptly. Up to date with technology - online scheduling system, iPads for insurance information, and new, clean equipment. Highly Recommend
Another customer service failure by RedEye. Dr Patel is great, but that s about it at RedEye. Front desk receptionist has zero class & customer service. 4 trips to RedEye and 5 weeks waiting for a pair of Rx glasses not ONE apology by staff. $500 for Gucci frames, $700 for prescription = a bunch of trouble on my part.

Have been going to Red Eye for several years. The Doctor has actually changed a couple times over that period, but it's always been a positive experience. They are close and friendly. Before coming here, I would get an exam every several years and order contacts online, but it's much more convenient to just call in and tell the staff to re-order for me and not have to think about it.
Plus, you get the added benefit of supporting a local small business.
Dr Gifford is an excellent doctor, very professional, & friendly. Excellent location in Bucktown with plenty of parking in the neighborhood. Complete/thorough eye exam. You can call or setup appointment online (new). He has handled my family's eye healthcare for years especially my teenage son who has autism and was looking forward to an eye exam with Dr. Gifford. So if you are searching for an eye doctor who works with patients with disability, Dr Gifford would be a great fit.

I have been going to Red Eye for about two years now. In that time I've had two eye exams and bought two pairs of frames. I've also stopped by a couple of times to have my frames fixed or altered. I am always impressed by how helpful and approachable the staff are and I really appreciate how clearly Dr. Kohn explains each step of the eye exam. The offices are clean and bright and they have an excellent selection of frames. I would highly recommend Red Eye.

Dr. Kohn is the most professional, caring and conscientious eye doctor I ve ever dealt with. I made an appointment on short notice due to a sudden eye issue, and I was very nervous that I had perhaps damaged my sight permanently. But the minute I was greeted by Dr. Kohn I was immediately put at ease. His calm manner and avid listening allowed me to be comfortable with the exam, treatment and prescription process, and now I won t hesitate to return for follow-ups and new glasses. I actually can t imagine a more thorough yet reassuring eye exam.

I hadn't been to an eye doctor in a long time and chose Red Eye because it was close to home. Their support staff was super friendly, both over the phone and in-person (Thank you Leslie for helping take the time to contact my insurance provider get my insurance verified!), and Dr. Patel was kind and explained my options to me very thoroughly. I recently went to Red Eye for a long-overdue check-up and to buy some new glasses. I was greeted warmly by the front desk, quickly filled out my patient information with an easy-to-use app, did an initial screening with an associate, and then had a very thorough eye exam with Dr. Gifford. Dr. Gifford have a lot of great extra information during the exam, and was sure that my prescription was spot on. I have already recommended Red Eye to multiple people and will continue doing so whenever the topic of optometrists comes up.
I chose Red Eye for my first visit to an optometrist in ages (new patient, customer) and the experience was exactly why I prefer small to midsized businesses. My last experience was at a chain 15 years ago and there was a really hard push for me to buy glasses that ultimately gave me headache from a poor fitting. Dr. Kohn and the staff at the front desk were the antithesis of that experience. It's nice to feel that I have a place to go to help care for my eyesight.
