Immersed in history, visited by Henry VIII and used to imprison Mary Queen of Scots, this ruinous structure was an important monument during the the English Civil War where it regrettably lost half its construction to cannon balls. Journey to the apex of the Great Tower as the 98 steps take you on a safe but fearful trek on a spiral stone staircase 75 feet to the top of the castle where only iron bars protect you at certain points on your way up. The underground passage is an interesting feature originally used as a channel from the kitchen to the tower, but later used by soldiers during the Civil War.
There are only large indents left from the sunken gardens along with remnants of the family chapel but it is still an excellent example of a medieval castle.
There are no cafe facilities but you can purchase tea and coffee, and there is small gift shop with an array of products and where wine and mead is available to taste (bought a lovely Heritage Mead and Ginger Wine). Parking is limited and toilet amenities are available.
A great place to while away a few hours if you love history, architecture and castles.

Norman castle is a popular tourist attraction, managed by English Heritage. Ruins stabilised from further deterioration, and the grounds are all laid to grass. 98 steps lead to the top of Hastings tower. Underground passage from the kitchen basements to the Hastings tower probably created during the Civil War.
