Portland State Vanguard: The Ultimate Student-Run Newspaper
Portland State Vanguard is a student-run newspaper that has been serving the Portland State University community since 1946. It is an independent, non-profit organization that aims to provide accurate and unbiased news coverage, as well as a platform for students to express their opinions and ideas.
The newspaper covers a wide range of topics, including campus news, sports, arts and culture, politics, and social issues. It also features opinion pieces from students and faculty members on various topics of interest.
One of the unique aspects of Portland State Vanguard is its commitment to diversity and inclusivity. The newspaper strives to represent the diverse voices within the PSU community by covering stories that are often overlooked by mainstream media outlets. This includes stories about marginalized communities such as people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, international students, and people with disabilities.
Portland State Vanguard has won numerous awards for its journalism over the years. In 2019 alone, it won six awards from the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association (ONPA), including first place in General Excellence for newspapers with a circulation under 10k.
The newspaper also provides valuable opportunities for students who are interested in pursuing careers in journalism or related fields. Students can gain hands-on experience in reporting, writing, editing, photography/videography production design/layout through internships or volunteer work at Portland State Vanguard.
In addition to its print edition which comes out every Thursday during fall/winter terms (and bi-weekly during summer term), Portland State Vanguard also maintains an online presence through its website www.psuvanguard.com where readers can access articles published online throughout each week.
Overall Portland state vanguard is more than just a student-run newspaper; it's an essential part of PSU's campus life providing information on events happening around campus while keeping everyone informed about what's going on both locally & globally!
