All my grands have attended, as well as the children of other family members for over 30 years. Porter s has 4 Keystone stars and has been accredited by NAEYC for the past 25 years. My children attended child care in the suburbs, but this center was a rare fine in an all African American community. Everyone s experiences are different- It s great to see people stand up for their children, just make sure when you do or read or write reviews -remember there are three sides to every story- yours, theirs & the truth.
Ps I ve worked at Porter s for 20 years. In the past, I worked for PSFS, Lincoln University and as a consultant for nonprofits. One thing about African American establishments the scrutiny comes hardest from African Americans. Yes, parents should take an active role, but be active all the time!! Show up at parent meetings, volunteer to serve on the board of directors- make your parent power visible!! When you only use your voice to complain you remain stagnant in your child s educational process! That s the difference between urban & suburban- Parent Power!!! African American children loose out on opportunities for advancement because parents don t show up during the planning stage, only in the dismantling phase! Showing up is uncomfortable, but your child is worth it- right!!!Stop being an after....showing up after the fact, making noise after, throwing names after governing agencies rule accusations are unfounded etc.- be at the head so your accountability in every aspect of your child s life is visible.
