We (2 adults required) took Troop 92 in 1995 & Y2K (got the 2k ghost patch) and I would advise a minimum one year training (physical & skills) for your first class or greater ranking scouts in the crew(s) because it is REAL... and NOT a video game!!!! The rangers will leave you deep in country late on the second night with out any notice. It has to be one of if not the most thrilling experiences of my life and I camped out at Paris Island for 13 weeks in '77... Get to your prechosen and mandatory nightly camp; do NOT miss the daily activity or the staff produced camp fire shows most nights!!!! Be Prepared...

What can one say about Philmont that hasn t already been said? It s a place to view nature s beauty while enjoying the outdoors with friends.

The staff is amazing and the facilities are second to none. It s more than worth the price to go. The memories you make there will last a life time.

Be sure to take a camera with TONS of storage. You ll be taking pictures every five feet. Train hard so you are in shape when you go. Most important: Make sure you and your Scouts follow the Leave No Trace principles. Philmont is best enjoyed when no one can tell you ve been there. And it will preserve the camp for future generations.

Called.Disneyland for hikers there is a lot to see here. While you can't go into the back country, you can tour the Villa Philmont built by Waite Phillips in the 1920s before he donated the land to the Boy Scouts and visit the Rayado camp that was a homestead and stop along the Santa Fe trail. Then visit the Seton Museum. Before you leave stop at the Tooth of Time trading post at base camp to pick up outdoor gear or souvenirs. Best of all there is no cost for the tours. Make reservations before you go.

PSR is a great place for people to come together to learn more about themselves and each other. The scouts learn teamwork and leadership skills as well as many other useful skills. But most importantly scouts and advisors learn that when one digs deep within & applies one's self they can accomplish what seems improbable/impossible. I almost blew a calf muscle. I had Rock Tape kinetic tape in the 1st aid kit. When I pulled it out to repair myself, the following quote was on the peel away paper: "Pain is temporary. Failure is forever." Very motivational quote. I was proud to be part of my nephew's trip and jonored that I was invited along. I encourage parents and extended family to participate in this life-changing / life enhancing experience. I promise, no matter the outcome, one will walk away with a new look on life.

When I first thought of going to Philmont I didn't think I would like the place. Hot, dry and didn't think I would like the place. Boy! was I wrong about that. I said to myself at the very end that I need another week of it. It was so great I am planning on going next year again. Thanks Philmont staff you made my stay very enjoyable and fun I felt like a kid again. See you next year.

I visited Philmont in 1967 as a kid to drop off a friend. I posted that pic. Little did I know I would go back in 2017 and have the best time of my life hiking there as a Scoutmaster with my son and crew. It really is the happiest place on earth. I highly recommend going there.

Philmont Training Center is where scout leaders are trained in scouting during regularly scheduled leadership conferences. The Villa Philmonte is located at this site, which was the summer home of Waite Phillips. Built in 1926, and donated (along with a total of over 125,000 acres of surrounding land and back country) to the Boy Scouts of America in 1941, the home has been preserved and may be seen on tours conducted throughout the day. Tent cities house most conference participants and meals are provided on site at a large cafeteria building. An assembly hall and classrooms are used for training sessions. Other buildings include a coin-operated laundry, an art and craft center, and an outdoor mini-amphitheater. [Update - July 2012]: The Philmont training center has recently upgraded their bathroom and shower facilities in their tent cities and they are excellent.

Premier Boy Scouting opportunity to visit back country wilderness that, after 80 years of use, is still as pristine today as it was all that time ago. Leave No Trace rules and bear protocols really work!

I wanted to see what has since I was there for back packing trips of ten days each in 1976 and 1977 . Amazed at the changes and improvements . Had lots of memories brought back about the two times that I was hiking at the ranch. 2 Thumbs up .

As someone who has been both a participant and staff member at Philmont Scout Ranch, I highly recommend it to not only to Boy Scouts, but anyone who feels like they need some high adventure in their life. It is an experience like no other, and it will truly change your life in a way that you will notice, whether it be right after you complete your trek, or years in the future.

Amazing wildlife, even at basecamp. Saw plenty of rabits, turkey, and deer. Food at base camp is pretty watered down; at least for trailbound crews. Verizon usually gets 3G at base camp and elsewhere. Must do: Climb the Tooth of Time.
Urraca's campfire is very good.

Philmont was probably one of, if not, the greatest experiences in my scouting career and life. I went to Philmont with my troop and little brother the summer of 2015, and I will never forgot the amazing time I had. The staff, including my Ranger Ricky Nick, were some of the coolest and friendliest I've ever met at a camp, and they all seemed to love their jobs.
First off, the land is beautiful. I stopped countless times to just soak in the raw beauty of the desert mountains, the alpine forests, the rushing streams, and the majestic view from the top of Baldy. The wildlife was actually wild. Because of scouts and people on the ranch treating animals with respect in the area, deer and wildlife often passed within eyesight knowing we wouldn't threaten them. We roughed the elements through rain and shine and thunder and hail, relishing every moment.
The activities are great. My crew did the climbing route, itinerary 15 at the time. Even though we didn't get to do spar-pole climbing due to weather, the rock climbing, burro racing, gold-panning, COPE, and countless other events were unforgettable.
All the memories, jokes, and and joy from my time at Philmont will last the rest of my life, and I can't wait to return when I do.

I have been to Philmont 2 times and my son once. I went for Family Leadership Training with our Scout District and my son went with Order of the Arrow Trek.

I know that when I grow up I want to be a Philmont full time worker.

Philmont is literally God's country! They even say that and it's true!! It was the best experience of my life being out there backpacking in the wilderness for twelve days!! I would encourage any scout to go on this wonderful journey!!

The programs and workers here are great. I've done two treks as both a scout and a leader, and I loved it each time. There are many options in trek length and programs, as well as difficulty options and information to help choose the trek that is best for your group.

Spent around 20 days on property including pack burrows for a few days and climbing baldy mountain! The view from the top was simply breathtaking! 14,444 feet if memory serves correctly!
Simply one of the most beautiful places on earth! Millions of years and wind and water molded this land into something amazing!

Dont remember much of base camp except they had to watch us PEE! Apparently to.make sure we were hydrated or what they referred to as "clear and copius"! Amazing experience though and although it isn't cheap was worth triple the price we paid!
Not sure its gonna be the same.with females in the "BOY SCOUTS" now but the liberals have taken over!
Also did a week at the Grand Canyon on the same trip and hit 4 corners too!
