The food is akways good, especially that mustard slaw. The workers are friendly and know their regular customers by name.

This is HANDS DOWN the most authentic bbq shack in Memphis. Get the jumbo chopped pork and you will not be dissatisfied.

I ordered with the hot vinegar sauce. Had a tiny kick and was the best vinegar sauce I've had hands down! The mustard slaw was a perfect addition with unique flavor as well. Highly recommend!

This is just a regular Barbeque place, I didn't experience nothing special at all. The people up front that took my order acted as if I owed them something, they acted as if I was taking to long to order but hell I had 5 people with me and 3 were kids, the menu is different from what's online so what I thought I wanted had to change. This establishment has a big reputation but I think that's the very reason they feel entitled, I won't be returning here at all.

This is Bar-b-q. No doubts no comparisons. Period. Case closed. If you re in, near, or passing by/thru Memphis and don t stop and indulge yourself then you don t love yourself.

Really good bbq! The ribs had a great bark on them, the beans are AMAZING! And the coleslaw adds a great balance to the plate. Absolutely a must eat!

Smoke Sausages are very good but the business need a face lift. It doesn't look like it's open when it is indeed open. Closes early so if you don't get there by 5 p.m. forget it.

Best ever BBQ in Memphis. Other BBQ places are ok. But seriously, after you taste Payne's, everyone else is 2nd, 3rd, or 4th. Mic Drop !!!

DROVE UP TO PAYNES BBQ DID NOT SMELL SMOKE ON THE OUTSIDE, FIRST THOUGHT DRIVE OFF, BUT THE REVIEWS SAID THAT THE FOOD WAS IMPECCABLE. I purchased the rib plate and it was so bland, which went in the garbage. Service wasn't that great. The cashier did not ring up the order just took my money i asked for a receipt said she didn't have receipts and wrote it on their menu and gave it to me. I will not patronize payne's again! Not worth the Star that was given

Their customer service is always friendly and good. They have an excellent memory when placing your order they don't have to write it down, so when checking out the charges are always accurate.Their barbque has a unique flavor and is very delicious and filling. I've been a customer since the 80's. I always return and recommend other people.

Simply the best! The chopped sandwich is to die for & you have to get it with all the fixins. I don t know how they make that slaw but it is a revelation. If you are trying to decide between this and any other BBQ restaurant you should always choose Payne s - no contest; long live/bless!

This is a true BBQ "joint", not a fancy restaurant. Great food, friendly people, and nothing done for show.

Good place if you just want to eat and avoid a crowdes place.
The pulled was tasty, but as someone wrote before there is no atmosphere.

So great! I had the rib plate, medium sauce, and sopped the plate with the bread! Mustard slaw was great, and beans were excellent, too.

Sauce had a sharp tang, with plenty of sweet, and plenty of vinegar. Very unique sauce.

Didnt go for the decor, def went for the food. The old gas station, cinder block wall vibe is totally what you expect for a hole in the wall Memphis BBQ joint.

Was my first time, will not be my last.

Definitely no frills; if it's ambiance you're after then skip this place, but if it's the BBQ that really matters, this place is worth a stop. The mustard-based cole slaw is a perfect accompaniment to the tangy pulled pork. The baked beans are a little peppery and have a nice residual brown-sugar sweetness. It's cash only, no plates, and plastic utensils, but the folks who run it are super nice and throw down some tasty 'cue!

No contest. Game over. This is it. The best bbq on earth.

I love their bbq sandwiches. They give you a lot of meat for the price. I will stick with only the sandwiches because the ribs were horrible.

Quick service. We went here because of This Is Us and it's supposed to be one of the best places to get Bar-B-Que in Memphis. It was great!

The food is the bomb. The best BBQ in the entire U.S. The employees are very friendly. The building and dining area leaves much to be desired ... but ... due to social distancing ... I got a to go order anyway.

The place is nothing to speak about but the food.....it's all that and a bag of chips.

It's the best bbq if you're into a less sweet, vinegar-based sauce. There are a lot of great spots in Memphis, but whenever I come back to the city, Payne's is at the top of my list. It's a special place

The mustard slaw made my day. I am currently trying as many Memphis bbq spots as I can and so far this has been the best! I highly recommend this to anybody who is looking for that little mom and pop bbq. They definitely know what they are doing.

Sauce was very good.Pork sandwich was ok didn't like the hard meat pieces.The smoked sausage was very good.Overall was good .I will go back .
