This is one of the best barbecue restaurants in Memphis. I was a judge's assistant at the Memphis in May Barbecue cooking contest for 11 years and I know a little about the Cue. I always get a pulled pork sandwich and take it home. You have to order from the counter but if you are handicapped it won't be a problem because the staff is very customer friendly.

Cheap sausage but the the chopped pork sandwichesb are good. The place need much renovation. The restrooms were dirty and smelly. They only serve pork and not beef. I would never go there again!

We went to Memphis and only ate ribs and pulled pork...We set out to find the best! All was ok but PAYNES was the absolute best!
I can't wait to go back. Mom and son business. Absolutely the best ribs. No. 1 in my book.

We were in Memphis for the day hoping we could find some good bbq and we found it! the outside is a bit daunting but when you go inside be prepared for some southern hospitality! 10$ got us 2 chopped pork sandwiches and 2 sides of pork & beans. Coming from PA I didnt think bbq could ever be THIS good. We ate in the car with our dog but went back inside to tip the lady who cooked it because it was just that good! Dont screw around just go here!

Payne's is the definition of 'no frills.' It is in a small roadside building where you eat at folding tables and makeshift chairs such as old church pews. The menu options are limited, but they are GOOD! Chopped pork is a specialty (you hear the chopping as soon as you walk in) so went with that. The sauce is tangy and vinegary. I do wish I would have asked for it on the side so I could taste the smokiness of the pork. The baked beans are hands down the best I've ever had. Not too sweet but rich and smoky. The slaw is mustard-ey and pairs well with the sauces.

My husband got the smoked sausage. Had a bite and it had really good flavor. Table next to us got the fried bologna sandwich which also looked amazing.

Didn't think I could like mustard based cole slaw, but this place changed my mind. Very limited menu, but I guess that means they do what they are good at. My wife had the chopped pork plate with a side of beans. She said they were very good. I had a half slab of ribs with the medium sauce, comes with the aforementioned slaw. Plenty of meat on the ribs and they had a good taste, but my mouth kept telling me they were boiled at some point. I don't think they were, I think it was the sauce. Still a place to try if you are looking for some Memphis BBQ. I will will warn you to not let the building or the kitchen" scare you away.

Wonderful staff, wonderful BBQ. They opened just for us today during snow and icy roads to fulfill a large order for my brother's funeral. Payne's was his favorite BBQ place in town. They truly go above and beyond, I felt like a part of the Payne's family as soon as I walked in the door.

The BEST BBQ in Memphis! I had the Chopped Pork sandwich and my husband had the Rib plate. Both plates were served with their mustard based coleslaw and baked beans, and it was all so good! The pork was so moist and the ribs were fall off the bone tender. The sauce was amazing (we got hot). The coleslaw pairs so well with the bbq. It was so good! We will definitely be coming back here when we come to Memphis!
