My father was admitted to Cardiac ICU after a heart attack. For some unknown reason they moved him out of ICU and into General Admissions. After being moved to Gen Ad, my father passed away. In the days leading up to my father's death, I called the hospital and my father's THREE doctors to please call me. I left messages for the doctors 3 times a day. Nobody would call me back. The only time they called me back was to tell me he died.
As the next of kin, I asked that they please treat my father for the heart attack. They told me there were no medical risks to treating him, they just didn't want to waste their time on tests in case my father moved and messed up the tests.
After he died, they told me that they lost his personal belongings. They seemed annoyed that I was upset that they suggested I "look through lost and found". They told me the missing belongings were only personal items and nothing of any value.
The doctors spent a grand total of 30 seconds a day with my father. They refused to call me. I was with my father for 2 weeks in ICU before I had to leave the state. The doctors told me it was fine for me to leave the state and that he would be discharged before the end of the week. After I left the state I called EVERY DAY and nobody bothered to call me back until he died.
After he died and I expressed my disappointment in the communication, they insinuated that if I cared to speak to a doctor, I should have been at the hospital. Very condescending.
His doctors should retire and leave it to doctors with more concern.
The nurses in Cardiac ICU and Surgical ICU (where they moved my father after they "needed a bed in Cardiac ICE") were great.
