I’m quite petite, so hauling a traditional kayak solo was always a struggle. That’s why I was so relieved when I found Pakayak in Higganum; the nesting design makes lifting and loading into my trunk a breeze, and I can even assemble it on my own. I’m thrilled to start taking this gear on adventures all over. The only thing holding me back from a five-star rating is the carry case. Since I have short arms, reaching the central handles is awkward. Adding side handles would be a big improvement. Also, while the standard wheels work okay on pavement, they struggle on grass. I wish the Bluefin 14 came with the rugged wheelset pre-installed, rather than having to buy the transport case separately.

The Pakayak performs just like a standard 14-foot hard shell. It handles well and feels stable enough. Its portability and compact storage size are what sold me. I keep it in the back of my pickup or in my RV so it is with me almost all the time. If I have a few hours I can use the map on my phone to find a place to get on the water pretty quickly. The large wheel kit is essential for me.

Pakayak is genuinely a design marvel. I still smile every time I see how easily it packs and unpacks. What really impresses me is how fun it is to paddle; it tracks beautifully even when there’s wind, and the gliding is fantastic despite being split into six pieces. I have total confidence in the clamps and the airtight hatches. Honestly, I love it more than my regular trailered kayak.

Assembly is straightforward, requiring about 20 clamps. I’m curious how the clamps hold up over time with saltwater exposure, but so far, it feels solid. This isn’t an expedition kayak; it’s designed for those who want the durability of rotomolded plastic without the hassle of roof racks or garage hanging. The cockpit is spacious and roomy, offering plenty of legroom for fishing gear, though it does compromise some deck-hand space. It’s stable, tracks well, and feels seaworthy. While it can be a bit wiggly laterally, knee contact provides good control. On land, setup time is comparable to loading a traditional kayak. It’s easy to break down and load, though the storage bag didn’t fit neatly in my Altima. Regarding weight, I found it heavier than the advertised 49 lbs—my measurements added up to roughly 61 lbs total, with the plastic parts alone weighing 51 lbs. Customer service explained that variations exist between components. Overall, it’s a capable boat for flatwater and day trips, offering great convenience, even if the weight specs are a bit optimistic.
