Outreachy: Empowering Diversity in Free and Open Source Software
Outreachy is an internship program that aims to support diversity in free and open source software. It provides a platform for individuals from underrepresented groups to gain experience, develop skills, and contribute to the open source community. The program is designed to help bridge the gap between talented individuals who are often overlooked due to their gender, race, ethnicity or other factors.
The Outreachy program was founded by Karen Sandler and Marina Zhurakhinskaya in 2004 as an initiative of the GNOME Foundation. Since then, it has grown into a global community with over 70 participating organizations including Mozilla, Wikimedia Foundation, Red Hat, Linux Kernel Organization among others.
The primary goal of Outreachy is to provide opportunities for people from underrepresented groups such as women (cisgender or transgender), people of color (African American/Black, Hispanic/Latinx/Spanish origin/Native American/Alaskan Native), LGBTQIA+ people (lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender/queer/questioning/intersex/asexual/aromantic/agender), people with disabilities (physical or mental) and those facing socio-economic challenges.
Outreachy offers three-month internships twice a year - during summer and winter - where interns work remotely on projects related to free and open source software. The internships are paid with stipends ranging from $5k-$6k USD depending on location. Interns also receive mentorship from experienced professionals in their field who guide them through their projects.
One of the unique aspects of Outreachy is its focus on providing a supportive environment for interns. The program recognizes that many participants may be new to open source development or may have faced barriers due to systemic discrimination. Therefore it provides resources such as online training sessions on technical skills like Git/GitHub version control system; communication skills like writing effective emails; project management skills like agile methodologies; and community building skills like code of conduct enforcement.
Outreachy also provides a safe space for interns to share their experiences, ask questions, and receive feedback. The program has a Code of Conduct that outlines expected behavior from all participants including mentors, coordinators, and interns. It also has a dedicated team of volunteers who handle any reported incidents or violations.
