About Operation freedom paws

Operation Freedom Paws: Empowering Veterans and Individuals with Disabilities through Service Dogs

Operation Freedom Paws is a non-profit organization that aims to empower veterans and individuals with disabilities by providing them with the necessary tools to train their own service dogs. The organization was founded in 2010 by Mary Cortani, a former US Army dog trainer who saw the need for a program that would help veterans and individuals with disabilities regain their independence.

The mission of Operation Freedom Paws is to restore freedom to those who have lost it due to physical or mental challenges. By teaching individuals how to train their own service dogs, Operation Freedom Paws enables them to live life on their terms, without relying on others for assistance.

The program at Operation Freedom Paws is unique in that it focuses on training both the dog and the handler. Participants are paired with a dog from a local shelter or rescue group, and then work together under the guidance of experienced trainers. The training process typically takes six months, during which time participants learn basic obedience skills as well as more advanced tasks such as retrieving items, opening doors, turning lights on and off, and even alerting handlers when they sense an impending medical emergency.

Once participants have completed the training program at Operation Freedom Paws, they are certified as service dog teams. This certification allows them access to public places where pets are not normally allowed such as restaurants or airplanes.

One of the key benefits of working with Operation Freedom Paws is that participants get to choose their own dogs from local shelters or rescue groups. This not only helps reduce overcrowding in animal shelters but also provides participants with an opportunity to save a life while gaining a loyal companion.

Another benefit of working with Operation Freedom Paws is that all services are provided free of charge thanks in part to generous donations from supporters around the country. This means that anyone who qualifies for the program can participate regardless of financial means.

In addition to its core training program, Operation Freedom Paws also offers other services such as therapy dog certification classes for those interested in volunteering at hospitals or nursing homes; canine good citizen classes for pet owners looking for basic obedience training; and even summer camps for kids interested in learning more about dogs.

Overall, Operation Freedom Paws has been incredibly successful since its inception ten years ago. To date, over 400 veterans and individuals with disabilities have completed its training program resulting in countless success stories where people have regained independence thanks to their service dogs trained through this amazing organization.
