I could not enter either but it was a meeting date for the group. Externally magnificent. In the square was installed a football field with metal bleachers for the local championship.

The Basilica of Santa Croce is by birth the "church of the Florentines" since the citizens were paid for the construction work at the end of the thirteenth century. Originally located outside the city walls, it was built on a pre-existing Franciscan church most likely on a project by Arnolfo di Cambio. The facade, in a revisited Gothic style, dates back to the mid-nineteenth century. The interior of the church itself is a museum: it houses numerous richly frescoed chapels dedicated to the prestigious Florentine families who financed its construction and many funerary monuments of illustrious Florentines. Among the many works contained in the Basilica, the most important is undoubtedly the Crucifix by Donatello, the cause of a dispute between the artist and Brunelleschi who, finding it "rough and peasant", wanted to make a comparison. It is the only wooden work by the artist that has come down to us. The church also houses a Medici chapel, the work of Michelozzo.

Other important works preserved in the Basilica of Santa Croce are Donatello's Annunciation Cavalcanti and the Pulpit by Benedetto da Maiano. The Museo dell'Opera di Santa Croce is an integral part of the complex of the church of Santa Croce and the adjacent cloisters. Established as a museum in 1959 in spaces previously occupied by the convent and carefully restored after the damage caused by the 1966 flood, it houses splendid works of art from the Florentine school. An absolute masterpiece of the history of art is the Crucifix by Cimabue located in the fourteenth-century Refectory, a symbol of the transition to modern painting, which has sadly become the symbol of the destruction caused by the 1966 flood. They enrich the heritage of the Opera di Santa Croce museum also a collection of glazed terracotta by the Della Robbia, a magnificent gilded bronze sculpture depicting San Lodovico di Tolosa by Donatello, some paintings and wooden furnishings. The Pazzi Chapel is accessed from the splendid fourteenth-century cloister of the convent.

Within its naves it preserves the tombs or commemorative plaques of some of the most deserving historical personalities in Italy, such as Dante, Galileo or Marconi. A kind of sacred temple for the country, like Westminster Abbey for England.

It is worth paying, 8 or 5 reduced admission, to see this church. It is a visit that requires spending some time. It has many elements to admire besides the tombs of illustrious characters such as Michelangelo, Galileo or the one that would have been destined for Dante if he had returned to Florence. With the entrance you have access to the cloister, adjacent rooms and the gallery of the romantic tombs, which being like in a subway, dimly lit, gives the feeling of getting into those places where the protagonists of scary movies get in when you should not. In short, a must-see, worthwhile, and long, but there are bathrooms and even a vending machine for drinks, which I think is very good in summer

We were fortunate to coincide in our visit with an international audition of choirs, singing live before the altar. If the monument is already impressive, visiting it with such a soundtrack made the hair stand on end. When leaving, just when they closed the door to the visitors and while we crossed the inner courtyard until the exit, the bell tower fired us with a beautiful concert. The visit was round, great luck.
