Old Waverly Golf Club Review

Old Waverly is one of Mississippi's most admired parkland layouts, often rated as the No.1 course in the Magnolia state. This excellently presented Stay & Play golf venue combines Southern elegance and hospitality in equal measure. You'll need to stay in Old Waverly's on-site accommodations if you want to play this world-class golf course, which is generally reserved for members and resort guests only.

Old Waverly is a very special country club. It s steeped in Southern charm, after all, a Southern gentleman like founder George Bryan has a particular knack for making guests happy. Bryan is also the co-founder of the new Mossy Oak Golf Club, located across the street from Old Waverly in West Point, MS.

Since 1988, Old Waverly has been serving up a daily dose of Southern hospitality every day to members and guests of the Old Waverly Golf Club. Old Waverly was developed on the site of the historic Waverly Mansion and is regarded by many as one of the truly unique private clubs in all of the US.

Old Waverly is known for many things: its gracious service, five-star comfort food, home-smoked barbecue and sweet mint tea. But to golfers and members, it s best known for its championship golf course. Over the years, many top golf publications have agreed and enshrined Old Waverly on their "Best of" lists: Additionally, Old Waverly hosted the 1999 U.S. Women's Open Championship and was selected to host the 2019 US Women's Amateur.

The golf course was designed by Jerry Pate and the late Bob Cupp and is set against the backdrop of hardwood trees, stately homes and four lakes. Old Waverly plays over 7,000 yards and delivers a golf experience like no other. The course is highlighted by holes that place a premium on accuracy and shot making as well as a host of risk/reward shots, all while navigating through some of the most scenic views the Mississippi Black Prairie has to offer. Rightfully Old Waverly has emerged as the premier golf destination in the South.

Old Waverly offers several choices of luxurious accommodations including villas, condos and single-family homes. Guests have complete access to the club and its amenities.

When it comes to dining, Old Waverly has a number of options to choose from. Murphy's is located on the lower level of the Clubhouse and is a great place to eat a casual lunch, watch the big game, play darts or just relax with friends. Cameron's is the perfect place to relax and celebrate the end of the day or the beginning of the evening, depending on how you look at it.

In the event your tastes are a little more discerning and you desire something a little more elegant, The Magnolia Room welcomes diners with a panoramic vista of Lake Waverly and the golf course. Jackets are required for all gentlemen, as are reservations.

The English Garden at Old Waverly provides the perfect setting for afternoon tea, an outdoor cocktail party or a hearty barbecue feast. The highlight of the garden is the original smokehouse, where superb meats are prepared for even the most discriminating of tastes.

The members at Old Waverly Golf Club are a diverse group and hail from towns throughout Mississippi, neighboring southern states and from various cities across the country. To meet the needs of such a diverse group of members, Old Waverly has developed a comprehensive choice of membership categories designed for individuals and families of all ages and locations.

Ask anyone who s been to Old Waverly what they feel makes this a special place and you ll hear a variety of responses. But ask George Bryan and he has a different perspective; he ll tell you it s the people. Most are local Mississippians who need little instruction of how to take good care of members and the guests. Old Waverly also hires a number of students from Mississippi State University's PGA Golf Management program.

There are two ways to play golf at Old Waverly: become a member or play it as part of a Nature s Golf package. When packaged together with Mossy Oak across the street, you ve got a one-two combination that can t be beat.

Wonderful golf course. Although I've played Old Waverly a few times, they never fail to impress. The course was in incredible shape. The greens were smooth and relatively fast. (Probably around a 10-10.5 on the stemp. And, the staff is always excellent. DON'T FORGET TO GET THE MINT TEA!!! That alone is worth the trip.

Eat, play, and stay. Old Waverly is a five-star golf spot.

I visited this place to see how well it fit my view for a wedding venue. They were very accommodating and the prices to rent the rooms were unbelievably reasonable for the aesthetic.

I always love my visits here. It is really nice. Good food good staff.

Exceptional instruction. 2 of the best instructors in the world are located here and I can personally attest to Tim Yelverton s short game instruction.

An excellent golf destination. Groups from around the Southeast (mainly Memphis, Birmingham and all of MS) come for their annual golf event. The original Old Waverly course is near perfect and worth playing 9/10 times over their newest offering across the street in Mossy Oak.

The food was once excellent, but dismal service and lack of creativity gives you only unhealthy, stale choices. The service has been surprisingly poor and slipping through the years. Our waitress chose to share homophobic jokes as my group was walking out. She even shared, they get mad at me if I hit the customers. I still hold out hope and want to expect more in MS.

The golf course staff, especially Chris Jester at Mossy Staffing are very helpful and treats you like family. The cottages are updated, easy and ideal for golf groups - very hard to complain about. The course seems to always be in perfect condition (well done maintenance team) and was very fun to play several times over and over. Nice pool as well. I'll be back - hopefully soon!

Updated: I had to include an update after my most recent visit. The food and staffing makes the cost harder to justify, but in the end, the golf course is just that good. The primary competition includes RTJ courses in AL and Farmlinks at Purcell Farms. Both excellent choices in the Southeastern US.

Beautiful property off the beaten path 5 Star accommodations!

Great place the houses are very cozy, love how each room has its own bathroom and you share a common area. It s like being in a hotel but also sharing a house!

Stayed in the cottages. They are beautiful! Very clean & quiet & the view of the lake in the morning from the cottage porch is fantastic!

Excellent venue for golf. Absolutely loved the greens. Greens were fast but excellent for putting. Two thumbs up for the maintenence staff, the course was in tremendous condition!

Had an opportunity to play golf here through my work @cspire. Beautiful course, helpful and courteous staff. This course held the US Women's Open in the late 90's I believe. One of the top courses in Mississippi.
