The Oklahoma Mesonet is a world-class network of environmental monitoring stations that was designed and implemented by scientists at the University of Oklahoma (OU) and at Oklahoma State University (OSU). The network consists of over 110 automated stations covering the entire state of Oklahoma, with at least one station in each of its 77 counties. The Mesonet provides real-time weather data, soil moisture information, and other environmental parameters to farmers, ranchers, emergency managers, researchers, and the general public.
The idea for the Mesonet was born in the early 1990s when a group of scientists from OU and OSU recognized the need for a comprehensive weather monitoring system that could provide accurate and timely information to Oklahomans. They envisioned a network that would be able to measure not only temperature, humidity, wind speed/direction but also soil moisture content at various depths. This would help farmers make informed decisions about irrigation scheduling while also providing valuable data for drought monitoring.
In 1994, after several years of planning and fundraising efforts by both universities as well as state agencies such as the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), construction began on what would become one of the most advanced environmental monitoring networks in the world. By 1996 all stations were operational.
Each station is equipped with an array of sensors that measure various meteorological variables such as air temperature/humidity/pressure/wind speed/direction/rainfall/solar radiation/evapotranspiration; soil temperature/moisture content; leaf wetness; atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration; etc. Data from these sensors are transmitted via satellite or cellular networks to central servers located at OU's National Weather Center in Norman where they are processed into useful products such as maps showing current conditions or forecasts for specific locations.
One unique feature of the Mesonet is its ability to detect severe weather events such as thunderstorms/tornadoes/hail/floods using Doppler radar technology installed on some stations. This allows forecasters to issue timely warnings/alerts which can save lives during hazardous situations.
Another important aspect is its role in research activities related to climate change/agriculture/water resources management/ecology/etc., which require long-term high-quality datasets collected under standardized protocols across large spatial scales. The Mesonet has been used extensively by researchers from both universities as well as other institutions around the world who have published numerous scientific papers based on its data.
