GREAT HOTEL!!!!
It was amazing! The rooms are nice and spacious, I had a waterview from my balcony, the food was great and the drinks from the bar by the lobby were the absolute BEST

Very good hotel I was only there one night, however I enjoyed it. The attention was very good, very efficient in everything. The mobilization to the rooms in the cart is excellent, only that one is lost when he wants to walk again, but it is only to see the route on the map. It is very quiet in general, the pool is large and the squid rings were great.

Exc hotel, beautiful gardens, a view of the gulf of papagayo lindisima, amble and helpful staff. We will return without a doubt!

I have visited this hotel several times and this time I noticed that the service has declined, the breakfasts are bad. The gallo pinto is better prepared by me, who am not a professional cook, than the one they serve there.
The reception service was not very friendly when checking in.
It seems that the girl did the work out of commitment ...
The bellboy, a dark-haired man, was not able to help us with the suitcases, he just got in the car and started the engine, even a taxi girl who was there told him that he should help ...

Foreign clients smoke in all public areas and nobody tells them anything. We were in 602 and the customers who were on the same level smoked non-stop and neither security nor anyone told them anything at all. It seems that the anti-smoking law is not enforced here.

During the day there is no atmosphere, just a bit of animation in the main pool and that was it. There are no beach games, plus they took away archery. Needless to say about internal transport, the service is almost nil ...
Unfortunately this hotel is in decline.

The attention to the Ticos is very deficient. A pity to feel a bad treatment.

Be wary of the negative reviews, because Occidental Papagayo is a fantastic hotel in every way. PROPERTY - grounds are beautiful and well-maintained, rooms are clean, beds are comfortable. The property is built on a hill, so you will get some exercise. They do have shuttles, if needed. STAFF - very friendly, patient with the language barrier, and always smiling. The bartenders are especially fun, if you take the time to get to know them (Brian/Tony). We brought $100 in 1-dollar bills and tipped a buck or two occasionally to show gratitude. POOLS - the two pools are clean, ample chairs, really nice towels, and fun activities sprinkled throughout the day. FOOD - the buffet food has great flavor and changes theme daily. The specialty restaurants are excellent. No complaints. BEVERAGE - drinks are great, local beer is very good, the bartenders are fun. I've read negative reviews about there only being 2 beers per day in your room. Who cares! There's an open bar somewhere on site and you're not vacationing in your room anyway. NIGHTLIFE - the grounds do get quiet after dinner, but there is a disco/bar with music and drinks until 2am. BEACH - it is public but it's secluded, never more than a couple dozen people around. There are some small rocks/shells scattered in the sand, but comparable to all the other beaches we saw along the Pacific coast. EXCURSIONS - people at the beach do have less expensive options. We talked to Junior and got good deals. Be wary of timeshare offers. OVERALL - this is a great place for those seeking a mid-size resort with a more relaxing atmosphere. Costa Rica is paradise so I'm not sure how anyone has a bad time. Definitely going back for the Pura Vida culture!

Excellent place very quiet, personalized attention at all times. Although there is a need to improve the entertainment staff a bit. That's why I do not give it 5 stars

A few days ago we spent a nice weekend in an excellent hotel, the staff were very friendly, the attention was too good, a very nice place just to spend a few days as a couple

This place is great but getting reservations at the specialty dinner spots was very tough and the food at the regular dinner place was very repetitive and got old fast. Wish they had a swim up bar. Pool is small but they are right by the ocean for added variety

Excellent resort. Food was great. Staff was helpful and acomodating and we had a great time.

Horrible place. Food was the worst. Accommodations were acceptable however, you had to call and beg for room service or they would skip you. We went with a larger group who picked this place out so we had no say. I read the reviews prior to leaving and they basically confirmed what I experienced. Don t waste your money unless you just want to sit around the pool and get drunk with low rent people and eat bad food.

We made the reservations with the call center asked us the ages of the companions and ready when we arrived they did not let us stay because it was a less than 15 years old because it is a place of rest where they do not accept minors we had to run to see where we stayed the truth bad experience

Exc hotel we enjoyed a great vacation, first class service and quality service. The a la carte restaurants are spectacular so we will definitely go back!

Our visit is simply summarized in: FABULOUS!

The intention of the trip was a birthday celebration and we were delighted, each of the details that the hotel takes to make the stay enjoyable is incredible; What we liked the most was the tranquility in which the place surrounds you since being Adults Only makes it a place to rest.

We recommend it and we look forward to our next vacation to return!

Everyone on staff was extremely friendly and always went out of their way when possible to make our stay as comfortable as possible. Very relaxing environment.

This is a nice little resort. I only got to stay one night, so I didn't really get to take it all in. What I got to see was a small, secluded beach. It had a designated swimming area due to the rocks the rocks that surrounded it. These rocks made a bit of a break water, but swimming on the other side could be dangerous. The food was delicious, and definitely more regional. A seafood paella was served at supper that was delicious. Breakfast had regional specialties, as well as food that non-adventurous Americans could enjoy enjoy. The staff was friendly, but maybe a little understaffed.

A little restricted where to order the drink. The pool restaurant closes at 6pm and you have to go up to the lobby bar if you want a drink. Being for adults only, this is strange.

I am currently staying there the rooms are fantastic and so is Owen (From Delta Vacations). All of the employees are extremely pleasant.

I would give it zero stars if I could. Food quantity and quality are both very low. Staff have too many responsibilities to manage guests properly. Overall experience is poor.

Very good place to relax as a couple, very good the organization of recreational events. The team formed by Corina, Jennifer, Victoria and Stacy, is very active with proposals of Voley, shenga, walks and more things that we could not do. Very bad that does not have WiFi open.

The Occidential Papagayo is truly a great 5 star all inclusive hotel it's full of great people and extremely friendly and will go the extra mile to help you out anyway they can.Speaking of helping you out I found that the most helpful for us were the shuttle drivers which will take you anywhere you want at the resort, but the one person that really stands out on all this is a young lady named KAREN in people services you can go to this young lady for tours or book a restaurant for you at that resort and you have no worries.,But the best thing about KAREN is when you go and talk to her about booking a tour or tours she goes over everything 100% so there are no surprises KAREN tells it the way it is and goes that extre mile to possibly get you the best bang for your buck. In my personal opinion if I had to rate this young lady out of 10 I would have to go 15 no kidding aside. Take extra money for the tours are pricey but worth it. The few things I would change if I was involved with this resort there should be more free water,2 bottles a day in that heat is not enough -i would also put a bench up by the pool bar for with a lot of senior's down there it's a great idea to sit and wait but the biggest thing I would change is FREE WI-FI especially for the cost of the trip should be enough All in all these are just my opinion's but remember it's HOT in costa Rica But worth the trip and experience and I personally looking forward to going back not for 10 days but for a month p/s people of the Occidental Papagago it's been a pleasure and keep the great work COMING thankyou--Doug Krala By the way if you book your holiday with westjet vacations you leave at 23:15 hours arrive at 07:00 they arrange a shuttle to pick you up and also take you back when your holiday is over, how much better does it get everything looked after so pack your bag and enjoy some good HOT WEATHER .

Bad service. Bad customer treatment at reception mainly. Us
room was delivered at 4:05 p.m. B you deactivate on the room cards for having left a set to keep fridge. The activities included we could not highlight them because you always told us that they were complete even if we called first thing in the morning

It seems a real scam that in a hotel of 5 stars you charge the wifi at exorbitant prices ..... also that the hotel has spa and charge you for entering at inaccessible prices, then the shower water of the room came out cold, and to value something the treatment of the employees and the facilities very cool, but there are other options much better .... I would not return.

Had a great time due to the beach and free drinks/food. However, the food is mediocre at best, as others have already posted it can be difficult to find bartenders anywhere near the pool. There were drain flies all over the room, the toilet was backed up. Smoke and mirrors this place. Wouldn't recommend.

My girlfriend and I really enjoyed the Occidental. My review is relative to the price paid. This is no Sandals or 4 seasons, nor does it come with the price tag or clientele. Service was excellent, food was good enough, and location was also great. Every single staff member was awesome, how often does that happen? Little older of a crowd (never met so many Canadians!!) but just hit the swim up bar pool or bar near the lobby for a younger crowd. Huge shout out to Juan Carlos at the pool (made our trip!), the lovely ladies in the restaurants (sadly cannot remember names), and Junior down at the beach. I recommend going through Junior down at the beach for all things excursions or reservations or just questions for things outside the resort. It s safe as long as you aren t looking for trouble, but Junior especially made us feel well taken care of. Bring him a drink to the beach and say Nick sent you for a good deal! Other pros and cons:

Pros:
-Beach wasn t as bad as expected with other reviews. Lots of dead coral but plenty of clear water for sports.
-Security in and out of the resort was excellent.
-Italian restaurant was amazeballs and made the grill seem less than desirable. Grill venue is converted from the snack bar and has lizards crawling everywhere. We did not enjoy the food as much as we would ve liked. Hit up Junior for a safe and planned romantic/fun dinner in Coco.
-Spa and staff were great! Spa offerings aren t spectacular but we enjoyed a couples massage.
-Monkeys on site!!! The place is full of wildlife.
-Swim up bar was fun and music was nice
-Grounds were very well kept and maintained. Clean and orderly.
-Location and availability of excursions like ATV, Sunset sailboat cruise, snorkeling, dolphins, and Coco Beach fun.
-Gift shop pricing was good in my opinion despite all the reviews. Yes $15 for sun tan lotion but they have souvenirs, snacks, and medicine that are priced decently. In line with most resorts it not cheaper.
-We enjoyed the breakfast, and loved the staff who made our stay.
-Drinks were great (ask for a stronger drink and you shall receive)

Cons:
-Only allowed to make two reservations per stay (may be more if you stay longer than 4 days) and they must be made very early in the morning. Times will be late so enjoy the sun and drinks as much as you can.
-WiFi was spotty and took a while to connect but then worked fine. Unsecured so get a VPN for anything confidential.
-Snack bar has the same food every day. Last hot dog I eat for a while.
-A/C filter in room was bad. Heard similar issues from other people. If you get a bad sore throat tell them to replace it. Mine lasted 4 days and sucked.
-No ATM on site. Don t break down into singles until you get there as they re happy to give change
-Rooms were ok, our door didn t shut without ample effort and had some ants. Fridge includes a soda or two, water, and water beer.
-Room service not included
-Noise outside of the rooms can be an issue if you are a light sleeper or didn t drink enough. One night we had some drunk idiots on a path of self discovery otherwise was not an issue.

At the moment I am in Occidental Papagayo. REALLY the price quality ratio is very good. I think it's cheap. The food is delicious. The super clean and well maintained pools. The staff very attentive. If you ask for Room 2205 apart from the lujazo inside it has a view of Wonders. (I accept an attention to room 2205 today is August 17, 2019;)

Very quiet place to rest and enjoy the beautiful views of the surroundings, the staff takes pains to take care of the guests and within them, Laura, Alex and Omar stand out.
If you need more entertainment at night, in short we highly recommend staying at this HOTEL

Beautiful resort! Staff lacking,not the most friendly of resorts we have visited. The food was average at best. Felt kinda sick after eating. Some staff said they cut back on alot around resort after barcelo took control. Would not return. Will return to Costa Rica though!!

Beautiful Resort. Food was great. If you wanted to be loud or quite, this is the place.

We had our wedding at the Occidental Grand Papagayo and could not have had a better experience. It was incredible!!! We wanted a low key, affordable option for our guests to come and experience Costa Rica while not sacrificing the wedding experience. While it is not the 4-seasons, we got way more than what we paid for. I could go on and on - we had 65 guests and everyone had a blast. The best part was the exceptional staff catering to all of our needs. A+++++ A very special shout out to the best wedding coordinator ever - Idania!!!

Probably wouldn't come back. Beautiful setting, staff are pleasant, access to the beach is easy. Food is mediocre but plentiful. WiFi spotty. They play loud "music" with a heavy beat at the pool throughout the day and you can hear it in your room. "Ommph ommph ommph." Not a great setting for a relaxing afternoon nap.

Obviously everyone giving this place 4 stars has never been to secrets. Nuff said!

I DO NOT RECOMMEND!! For nothing this hotel was the first and last time I visited. Bad management, in our stay in my room I had no cable on the tv.el phone did not work had to call from my cel to the reception to inform them and however they did not solve it, they did not let me drinks in the supposed mini bar the water of the tube smells cluaca and tastes disgusting .. mediocre food, the snack is open until 5pm only in this hotel and seen this is supposed to be a snack should be 24 hours limit everything! It is supposed to be a hotel for adults and does not have any music or show or anything, you do not hear any crickets all day you have no choice but to go to bed early. at 5 you can not use the pool anymore, apart from everything they have a young girl in "animation" her name is Kattya who is super rude and vulgar this young woman told my husband to go and wash the cu ..! Because my husband did not remember her name. Super indignados total lack of respect and ethics of this supposed "luxury hotel"

So far the food has been good and the weather outstanding. I'm a bit concerned about the WiFi on property. I've found a few access points to be unsecured (default password securing their aps). I don't trust their technology on property. Not worth the purchase of WiFi and for safety and security you should not connect.

It was my first time visiting Costa Rica. I loved the hotel resort the food was delicious. I love the dance club everything about this resort was wonderful.

Lots of stairs and steep paths. Great if you're looking for an active getaway, but maybe not the best choice if you want to lounge and party.
