The zoo inside is good for families. Some animals, like tiger and jaguar are always sleeping. Bears are always fighting with each other. Not many people are visiting the zoo in the covid19 situation. But the only concern from us is that the zoo is located in Oakland, which is not a safe place for families to drive through.

Beautiful grounds. Alot of different animals that look healthy, well feed, and playful. Tjis place is 100 acres and feels like Disneyland for Zoos. The gandalos ride is amazing and enjoyable while watching the best views in the Bay Area! Zoo keepers are great and offer great service. They provided exceptional education about each animal.

It should be arguably the best zoo in Bay Area and nearby.
Very reasonably priced, it offers a free Gondola ride up the mountain ( not to be missed) too!!
With our family of four and with 2 kids, we were able to experience 80% of the zoo in 4 hours. We did not do the other sky ride ( paid service). A paid train trip also adds to excitement but it is a very short ride.
There are about four rides ( carousel, plane, etc) which are OK priced at train station.
It has a reasonable collection of animals and most impressive to us were the primates. The park has lot of birds out of cage and in the wild. For bird photography, I found ample opportunities. Park has decent food options and several picnic areas.
Overall a good half day trip. Since there are activities too other than exhibits, you could plan multiple trips in the year.

I love wild life, environment sustainability, and fun! If those are also your cup of tea, the this is the place to go. wether you are a local of a tourist looking for something unique try it! The staff is very friendly and caring. Also now, if you visit and it's your birthday, make sure to tell the staff, you get a birthday pin. When a staff see's you, you get a smile and happy birthday! :)

I love going to the Oakland Zoo, they have lots of animals to see and fun things for the kids to to do. There's a train that takes you around a section of the property, a cable car system that takes you up and over the lions and giraffes to another section of the park with a great view of both Oakland and San Francisco cities from the cable cars.

They also have a new cable car system that takes you on top of the hill to a beautiful restaurant and lovely view of the two cities. The staff all around the zoo are always very friendly and seems to be very knowledgeable about the animals, you'll see them hanging out around some of the main area of the zoo to answer any questions about the animals or to give directions to the to the guests.

Overal, the Oakland Zoo is a wonderful little treasure in the city of Oakland which attracts visitors from all around the world.

Have fun at the zoo!! I hope this helps.

Great zoo for the whole family. Not too big, just right for kids of all ages. Don't miss the ride up the hill to the new restaurant - amazing views! It's built on a hillside so be prepared to walk up and down hills!

Not enough animals. Not a wide verity. Some were not available to be seen. Some sections were closed off. Rides were under construction. I love animals and I would like to see a wider variety.
There is no food options except one small place for some quick and expensive garbage.
Visit and decide if you like it. I loved the animals I did see, however, I will not revisit the same venue.

I added the photographs of almost all the major animals I saw except the lions. You will pretty good number of animals in the zoo. However I felt the animal enclosures ate really very small for them. When we are actually captivating them, we should atleast be sure that they get the minimum place to roam around. I honestly don t think they gave enough space. Apart from the images added we saw grizzlies, grey wolves and a jaguar. There are about four grizzlies, one jaguar and two wolves with their four pups. It was great to see them. We were lucky enough to reach the point during their feeding time. We could see the grey wolf carry food for the pups and also saw it hiding the food at many different places. The trains ride is for kids ONLY. Sky ride is worth it coz you have good chances of siting a lion from the top during the ride. Would have been a great place if the animals were given enough room.

Good for taking kids for a day's out.... Small and compact zoo with limited exhibits. Don't miss the cable car experience... Toilets were bad and stinking. But the zoo as a whole was well maintained.

Very nice zoo. Must take a tram to get to the area where there are animals that can be found in California. Unfortunately, except for a very brief glimpse of a wolf through some bushes, no black or grizzly bears were visible. The only sight of the mountain lions was a paw and a tail as they take advantage of the hammocks in their enclosures. Good view of the camels and elands and many other animals.

The California trail area is amazing - really well done, with a conservation mindset and animal care ethos I really approve of. There's also a small little rides area and a train that drives through an Emu and Wallaby enclosure. That said, some of the older exhibits have small enclosures, with animals I don't necessarily think should be in a zoo in California.

The new addition to the zoo is great . The play structure offers something different while still being able to see the animals. The gondola ride up is about 3 mins and very smooth and quiet. The only down side in the summer is you are in direct sun with little shade

It's a fair sized zoo, with so much to offer. Animals are wonderful and their keepers certainly love their animals- talk to them! You'll learn a thing or two.
Highly recommend going towards the farm animals, Patrick the goat is a lover, give him a good pet for me!

Yes, this is a small aquarium. However, it is only $20 dollars for "locals", so I think it is well worth the price. The tunnel is super cool, and they have many other nice displays. I wish there was more education information. I definitely would recommend going once or twice.

Came for the last day of ZooLights (Jan 1, 2016); it starts around the beginning of December. Fun little walk with lights and something to do for a date or when you have little kids.

Aside from the reptile house and the insect house, you won't see any animals that you would see during the day.

Good for kids.. It's mostly commercial zoo with more of property used for entertainment and landscape and less for animals. Kids amusement rides are just outside the zoo and must pay per ride

It's definitely a work out. I was sweating in my work clothes. Someone with mobility issues wouldn't do well. Other than the work out trekking up all the inclines though, its a beautiful zoo. You have to ride the gondola up to the California trail. It's a little scary but totally worth it.

Ok, not a huge zoo fan but happy to support the animals. That said, for close to 30 dollars for one burger, fries and a soda, I would appreciate decent food for it. I'd rather write a check....

Disapointing on the animals population but rainy so many could not be out. Nicer facility with recent improvements but San Diego is better and many in Europe are larger and more varied in animals resident or taken care of.

Hills, heat, bad asphalt, trails that lead no where or worse to dead ends and a map that doesn't show how punishing and confusing the terrain is. Nor does it show the real distance between exhibits.

The Oakland Zoo gets better every year, the new exhibits are much nicer for the animals. The new tram ride to the top of the hill is great, the cafeteria is already open there with great food, and the exhibits up there will open in the fall.

Lots of things to see and do here! Good concessions, too. Don't miss the new gondola ride to the top of the hill for their new California Trail- oriented exhibit: bears, buffalo, and mountain lions! Save the for the rides, too. They're very young child friendly.

A great zoo with a lot of different animals, spread out over a vast area. Memories as a kid involved the San Francisco Zoo, but I have to say that it is not match compared to the Oakland Zoo. We took the sky gondola to the aminal habitat area, and it was nice to be able to see wolves and other animals in such a large area, but still be observable by patrons. Some great veiws of the Bay as well. My son really enjoyed the different rides available.

Had a ball at the zoo! It reminded me of my childhood, when my friends and me used to go to the zoo and to the Knowland Park side of the Zoo. We'd ride the train and the sky lift there was at that time a Rollercoaster ride for older kids, and a Jr coaster for the little kids to ride. Now it's got a few new attraction's! The Gondola ride also the new Restaurant at the end of the Gondola ride. And a host of new Animals and habitats to see and experience

The zoo is small and we have spent a leisurely stroll in two hours. There are places in the park where food is sold, but you can also bring your own food picnic. Most of the zoo is located on the hillside. There are two entrances, one is higher on the hillside and the other is lower. The lower entrance is easier to drive downhill and it is very easy to see the intersection.
