Nnhs: Discovering the Wonders of Northamptonshire's Natural History
The Northamptonshire Natural History Society, or Nnhs for short, is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the study and appreciation of the natural history of Northamptonshire. Founded in 1876, Nnhs has a long and proud history of engaging with local communities, conducting research, and advocating for conservation efforts.
At its core, Nnhs is all about discovering the wonders of Northamptonshire's natural world. Whether you're interested in birds, mammals, insects, plants or fungi - or simply want to learn more about the geology and ecology of this fascinating region - there's something for everyone at Nnhs.
One of the key ways that Nnhs achieves its mission is through its regular program of events and activities. These include talks by expert speakers on a wide range of topics related to natural history; guided walks and field trips to explore local habitats; workshops on identification skills; and social events where members can meet like-minded individuals who share their passion for nature.
Nnhs also plays an important role in supporting scientific research into Northamptonshire's flora and fauna. Members are encouraged to contribute their own observations and data to ongoing projects such as bird surveys or butterfly monitoring schemes. This not only helps build our understanding of local biodiversity but also provides valuable information that can be used by conservationists working to protect threatened species.
In addition to these activities aimed at members, Nnhs also works hard to engage with wider audiences through outreach programs aimed at schools, community groups or anyone else who wants to learn more about nature in Northamptonshire. These might include talks given by society members at local schools or libraries; wildlife-themed art exhibitions showcasing work by talented artists from across the region; or public events such as bioblitzes where people can come together to survey a particular area for as many different species as possible.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the hard work and dedication of Nnhs's members. With over 500 individuals currently on the society's books, there is a wealth of knowledge and expertise to draw upon. Whether you're a seasoned naturalist or just starting out on your journey of discovery, Nnhs offers a warm welcome to all who share its passion for Northamptonshire's natural history.
So why not join us today? Membership is open to anyone with an interest in nature and costs just £20 per year (or £10 for students). In return, you'll receive regular newsletters packed with news and updates from the society; access to our full program of events; opportunities to get involved in research projects; and the chance to meet like-minded people who share your love of Northamptonshire's wildlife. We look forward to welcoming you into our community!
