Dropped by here after trying to lunch at another place that was closed for the holiday. Food came out quickly (party of 7), mostly an assortment of sandwiches with some seemingly tasty soups and one of the freshest chocolate chip cookies I've had to date. There's not a ton of space inside (this place is a bakery first and restaurant second), so if you have a large group, I'd secure some outdoor seating. You will bus your own table.

Amazing bakes, and very COVID-cautious environment (which is very important to me right now). They ask you not to enter the store without a mask on, but still provide service outside if you do not have one. When I was inside, a customer took his mask off and the employees immediately (but very politely) asked him to put it on or leave. Their baked goods are incredible as well, I've never had something that I didn't like there!
Best place in Durham for a cinnamon bun!!! We love this place and have been a patron for years!! They also make beautiful breads, and have a great little deli to grab a treat, local coffee, and chill:) Check them out at the Durham Farmer's Market !!!!
Had a fantastic breakfast catering experience with Ninth Street Bakery. They arrived a few minutes early and the pastries, fruit and coffee were delicious! I'd highly recommend them for your breakfast meeting catering needs.
I ordered the roast beef sandwich and was highly disappointed, the meat was gray and the tomato / lettuce was wilted, which indicated it was not a freshly prepared sandwich. and to make matters worst when took it back and showed the staff how the meat looked I was told that they had been selling this color meat all day. They did offer me another sandwich and gave me as a courtesy two cookies otherwise I would give them a one star. I had not been here in a while because of the quality of the food and thought I would give them another chance only to be let down again.
I had a great sandwich at ninth street bakery. It was reasonably priced and tasty, obviously with fresh ingredients. I also had a cup of potato soup, which was below average. It was brothy, but not quite salty enough to count as broth, so really just watery... watery potato water with a little chunk of potato.
Since I live about a block away I give these guys a try about every four months. Unfortunately they just are not very welcoming to walk in retail customers. I will probably try them again in a few months if they are still open
Over priced and they don't sell bread made same day? I asked the person if the have fresh bread, but it was made 72 hours ago... and the staff was rude. Wow very disappointed
Went there on a Sunday to pick up a loaf of wheat bread. The next day, it's covered in mold. Would never go back. Can't believe much of what they sell is fresh
Great kombucha. My standard meal is their Curried Lentils with rice and salad plus a glass of their kombucha. Always delicious. They have good options for people avoiding wheat or gluten.
Very simple bakery in downtown Durham. We ordered the chicken salad sandwich (delicious) full of chunks of real chicken and the Morning Bun for dessert - both were excellent
Came in during lunch and they had a line which to me means that it's a good place to go for lunch. But the line wasn't moving at all, saw 4 customers upset and leave. The employees were not in the best of moods which didn't help at all. Finally got to order, they gave me the wrong order and once I got my sandwich realized they forgot to add my 2 chocolate croissants. Had to sneak out of work just to grab the croissants, they didn't apologize or even offer to refund me. They just wanted to be done with me. I never gave them a hard time for it but was obviously upset. I don't recommend this place at all! Terrible customer service!
Horrible experience. Extremely dismissive and rude staff, didn t seem clean, menu did not reflect real offerings, pastries were stale and my salad was wilted and didn t taste fresh. Very overpriced! Stay away!!!!!!
Ordered a ham and cheese croissant it was pulled from case and put in bag without even asking if I wanted it hot.. I did actually find a smidgen of ham in the middle of it. The croissant itself was good even after being nuked. The orange cranberry muffin was on the tasty side especially after heating it up and putting on a slab or cream cheese.
Great spot for delicious pastries, snacks and I'm sure lunch although I only had a chocolate chip and banana vegan and gluten-free cookie and it was delicious. Beer kombucha and drip coffee were available as well. I had a Guatemalan coffee with almond milk. I look forward to trying some of their vegan lunch options when I have more time
Water Review: The water was very good... kept cold in a stainless steel cooler and easy access for water bottle refills. No aftertaste with this delicious water. The water area was a bit messy so I took a star off. Overall, high quality h2o.
Excellent Veggie Sandwich, every time. And the coffee is excellent! Very fast, always friendly and helpful; they will adjust cooking and condiments, lighter fare; day-old bread selection is a real winner.
A staple in downtown Durham, very popular breakfast & lunch spot. Cakes to croissants to fresh baked bread to muffins. Eat in or take out, little outdoor patio. Something different every day. Parking is tricky, mostly pay to park spots. Wheelchair accessible, restrooms for patrons
$5 for two stale croissants, and a cashier girl who barely spoke. Its pretty big in the back so I thought there would be more selection of breads etc being made. Just a few pieces under the glass which I don t think are enough to qualify the place as a Bakery I think the location is all whats keeping them trendy, but hopefully something else will takeover soon that we can enjoy!
Each time I visit Duke University, this bakery is a must stop- Ginger snaps, breads, scones, ALL GOOD and GREAT service! The owner saw me outside (after they had closed) and invited me in. Highly recommend.
The original healthy option for the best bread and pastries in Durham. Great lunch options as well. Under new ownership now, and continues improving an all ready great product. Love this place
Met these folks in the morning at the Durham Farmers Market. Excellent bread, samosas, muffins, etc. Hunted down their storefront/bakery. Yummy, well-spiced curried veggie soup for dinner. Cozy place to hang out, including an indoor Little Free Library and an outdoor patio. Delish food and very reasonable.
Big shout out to Ninth Street Bakery for hanging in there during the epidemic and still supplying the team with box lunches. I lived the roast turkey sandwich and WOW was that a BIG cookie . I'm still partial to the pumpkin muffin though and the almond cake I had once
Small but nice place in downtown Durham They have some sandwiches and beer and some other drinks. We got some cookies and a bear crawl. Close to the POUR TAPROOM AND BILL CITY BURGER & BREWERY
The bread and food are both excellent. The lentils are delicious. They have excellent fresh baked dark bread, including a Danish rye similar to German bread. But the staff can be disrespectful.
Bread is obviously amazing... but the new chef Matt really has it going on over there for lunch and early dinner... great selection of food I've heard... but the vegan dishes and 'Falafel Friday's are amazing. Farm stand on Fridays... The folks there are the best and really care about people, Durham, and food. The vegan cookies are out of this world. Add to that the homemade kombucha.. and the bakery is heaven for me. If I ever thought of moving to Durham, the bakery would be first on my list of 'pros'.
Not at all impressed. Prices are high. The lady at the counter seems discontent even talking. A man came out from the office and was rude to all customers in line. Pretty dirty as well. I don t really get this place or their attitude.
As a lifetime cookie monster, I must declare their peanut butter chocolate chip cookies among the best I've had anywhere! I've loved the sunflower bread for years, but try their special breads - every week a different take on true artisanal baking. The focaccia shown was amazing. All this and sandwiches too!
Ninth Street Bakery offers up awesome artisanal and organic breads and pastries. We love them so much, we feature Ninth Street Bakery as part of our Durham Walking Food Tour.
I had made an online purchase out of the blue late yesterday evening because of my father s recent news of his oldest sister dying of COVID-19. He is a very big fan of delicious, well made baked goods and so I wanted to surprise him with a box of a dozen pastries. He absolutely loved every single one from Ninth Street Bakery! They were definitely made with love; fresh and baked to perfection, his favorites were the blueberry cream cheese danish & almond croissant! I want to thank NSB for a lovely first time experience & helping me cheer my dad up a little, I will definitely be coming back for more!
We bought a sunflower bread and planned on having that for dinner tonight. Well, that didn t happen since we noticed mold on the bread. We just it bought yesterday afternoon so we are quite disappointed. We are not sure if the mold was already there when we bought it but either way, a bread that was bought yesterday afternoon should not be molded by today. And we checked, it s not flour since you can clearly see the mold spores. Please see attached pictures.
Hooray for discovering new local businesses. I discovered their bread at a local big grocery store, and decided I wanted to get it fresh from the source. What a treat to get my weekly bread PLUS a delicious sandwich and chips for lunch. Contactless delivery and plenty of measures in place to keep us safe if we pick up a to-go order. I'll be back again soon!
I am a regular purchaser of Ninth Street's "Omega seed" bread, which is lovely fresh or toasted and the best bargain in Durham for locally-made whole grain bread. Every few weeks, I same-day order directly from the bakery (rather than buying the loaves at Whole Foods or Kroger) on a day this bread is baked (wed and fri) and freeze for lunch sandwich-making in the household. The other Ninth Street breads are less interesting in texture, crust, and moisture. Their vegan coconut cookie is tasty and sold at various cafes in town as well as in-store. (I can't evaluate in-store lunches.)
Outstanding breakfast catering! We ordered breakfast for 11 people and had the fruit tray, cookies, ham and cheese croissants, other assorted pastries, and coffee. The cookies were our favorite but everything was delicious and there was more than enough food for everyone. Delivery was right on time. Thank you for the great food and service!
Liked that you could see people making bread at the store but Asiago cheese scone and croissant were too sweet. Friendly staff but I was not impressed with this place.
Met a friend for lunch at the Cafe. The bread wasn't good because it was a bit dry. We were disappointed, and decided to write this review to offer a balanced perspective. Our hope is that we experienced an unusual event.
Best kept secret in Durham, but probably not for long as their new owners accelerate the growth of their much deserved fan base.
If you need a super fast lunch at a reasonable price, you can't go wrong with one of their sandwich/side combos. I like the roast beef on 7 grain bread with Sunchips.
But the specials - OY VEY THE SPECIALS - are always so delicious. Whether it's falafel fridays, their black bean tacos, the vegan tofu BBQ sandwich, the veggie burger, or perhaps any of the dishes at one of their vegan or vegetarian pop-up dinners (South Indian night, anyone?) their food has just got it GOIN ON. I mean, it's even making me use caps for goodness sake.
They won't win any awards for decor on the inside, but you can't beat a summer day people watching on the terrace, surrounded by fresh herbs and veggies. And you won't care what the decor looks like after your first bite of their locally sourced, high quality ingredients. You'll be all about the food.
Plus, who couldn't love a place that hosts a pie eating contest on pi day?
Ninth street bakery is a great lunch spot. They are friendly, fast and their food is great. I have a gluten allergy but they have several gluten free options, which are delicious. I highly recommend!
This has quickly become my favorite spot to do work in Durham, due to the unlimited coffee refills, relaxed atmosphere, and reliable WiFi. The pastries are incredible, my favorite being the tartine, and I also deeply love the chili. They have three different vegan soups! Parking and finding a table are both very reliable and low-stress. They also send me frequent rewards and special offers.
I love their emphasis on collaboration with other local vendors. I often enjoy a vegan oat ball or other baked good at Cocoa Cinnamon. I am so glad for the existence of this bakery.
The blonde girl who waited on us was so rude. Then we went to have coffee at a table. I plugged my iPhone in to charge it for a few minutes and she scolded me... She said they didn't have enough room on their electrical strip (which had at least 5 spots open). I will never go back. I usually praise people and businesses on here but she should be fired.
In addition, the pastries were not very good.
Bad food, bad service.
We immediately left and went to beyu cafe and had a terrific experience and great breakfast.
Ninth street Bakery has been a favorite of mine since it was actually on Ninth Street, now located in the loading dock nook of the former Herald Sun building on Chapel Hill street and Main streets near 5 points. The best on the menu continues to include black bean soup and their signature breads (remember this is a working bakery as well as the value lunch deal place in gentrified downtown.) Now I enjoy Indian or Thai seasoned Lentils (see Dahl in the Indian context and curry in the Thai). For vegetarians they have a non melt or melty vegetarian sandwich. Both do the trick and come with either slaw or bag of chips. Meat lovers will find a good choice in the cold cut deli sandwiches. Pastries, and cookies are very size generous and tasty.
Standard downtown bakery with great stuff and excellent service. This place is no frills but that's part of the appeal. The staff is very friendly and the prices are reasonable.
Had good hopes for this place, but arguably the driest chicken salad sandwich I've had in a long time. Lots of chopped chicken, but nothing to hold it together. Maybe I just got them on a bad day...will try again some day.
