The hotel is quite old and they badly need to renovate, which they will on December 31. What we didn't know was that they require us to check out with luggage at 11 am on the 31st and there's no way to leave our bags any longer. The room too is a bit odd. The bathtub doesn't have a plug so no baths. There's a randomly locked cabinet in our room too. That apart, we love the location. It is so close to everything in midtown and we can walk to Penn Station as well as Port Authority. The rooms are of a good size too, and if you ask for a room with a view - they do ensure you get a nice one. We have a corner room and can see the Empire State Building.

Great for the price. Nice location and very clean interior. It is an old building, but the bathroom was fully updated, the bed was nice, and the a/c worked beautifully. Only complaint was we were told that we eould have a room with a view, which we did not. Out our window was the center of the building (walls and windows). Would stay here again.

Perfect location! They let us check in 9 am no charge and because we had a very long stay they upgraded us. Spacious room with a perfect king size bed and minibar. Great staff and quick elevators. We could not ask for more!

I will not recommend very disappointed the room heater was making very loud sounds all night I couldn't sleep and when reported they already knew was the heater. So if they knew there was a problem why hotel manager allows to accommodate guests in that room, not a bit of consideration. In addition the toilet bowl was leaking non stop.

Absolutely horrible experience! Noise from street construction was unbearable. Room was dirty with leftover trash and a razor in the bathroom. Non existent room service whatsoever. Avoid at all cost!

Rooms were of a decent size, furniture was very plain but comfortable. Although it was pretty cold outside, the room was rather warm and the thermostat did not appear to make any difference. Overall a decent hotel in a nice area of town.

This is a wonderful hotel in a great location just a short walk from Grand Central Station. The literary themed rooms have a collection of books so perfect for the book lover. It's easy to get around midtown from the hotel and not far from Times Square too. The concierge made a great recommendation for a local bar which was very appreciated. Some lovely touches include complimentary pastries throughout the day and wine and cheese in the evening in the Reading Room. Overall, would thoroughly recommended a stay at the Library Hotel!

(They still had old televisions, phone on bathroom wall!) but we got a HUGE room (as far as NYC standards are) had a nice view of Empire State Building as well we were the last guests to stay there before they closed in dec. 31st!

Hotel a bit austere externally but well placed.
Attention no breakfast possible.
On the other hand the air conditioning did not work (very dilapidated) and the 2nd night idem in spite of our complaint

If your looking for upscale accommodations this is not your place. This is a hotel with rooms to sleep in and shower and change. It's in a fantastic spot! Easy to get anywhere in mid town, by a short walk. The staff is very friendly. The housekeeping was very good, they kept my room neat. The front desk i didn't use but they were very helpful to people and took their time explaining things. The rooms are not perfect and some are outdated and run down. My room was from the 80's but my bathroom was fairly modern and European ( shower is only half enclosed). I have no complaints, I found the diner across the street very good as well and many others very nearby. You can walk to times square and Bryant park, the empire state building is right around the corner, as is Grand Central.

Great location, 10 mins walk to Times Square. View of the Empire State Building (if room is at the front).

Contra
Super loud (single glazing (!)), Unkempt (but not dirty), for the given equipment too expensive

I would have given this hotel a 5-star review, but on our 2nd to last day, one of my bags was stolen right out of my room! When I reported it, I was told I'd be contacted, but instead, no one has contacted me, nor has anyone responded to my countless messages. While the bag and contents therein weren't of great monetary value, the artwork was designed by a local artist for my friend's wedding, so there was sentimental value, not to mention, I felt quite uncomfortable leaving my room for the remainder of the trip for fear of what else might go missing.

The rooms are small and uncomfortable. Noisy and malfunctioning air conditioning. Staff not very friendly. I risked losing the return flight because the taxi to the JFK airport I had booked and paid for in advance at the reception did not show up and no one knew anything about it. The only advantage is the central location in the heart of Manhattan

The hotel is located in the center of Manhattan, 3 minutes from 5 Avenue. I stayed here two times when I visited New York. It's really a very good location. There is nice cafe opposite of hotel, where you can have breakfast. One time I have a very good room with nice view and very big bathroom. Wifi is free. I suppose it's a very good choice if you visit NY.

(I updated this review. Check below!)

I just spent three nights here and loved it. Upon arrival I was given a free upgrade to a Deluxe room which was brilliant! The staff are friendly, the bed was comfy and the bath was so big I could swim in it! Lol of course there was some wear and tear, but that's to be expected and definitely didn't take away from the overall appeal of the room. The hotel is within walking distance of everything with a great Starbucks just around the corner. Will I stay with this hotel again? Definitely. Do I have any downers? No. I definitely recommend this place!

Oh, one last thing. Instead of getting a Taxi back to JFK the hotel gave me their Limo! I'm definitely coming back to this place! XD

The location is great. Staff disappointed me (see edit below.) The rooms need renovations. Paying extra for a "superior" room means the room has a minibar... which costs extra to take anything out of... which means you pay extra for a "superior" room just to have the opportunity to pay extra for stuff from the mini bar. Not worth it imo. Get a standard room. Or go somewhere else as the staff here doesn't seem to know what hospitality is.

Edit - spoke too soon when I originally wrote this review. My 2nd day here the light burnt out in my bathroom. No big deal, these things happen and there is no way for any hotel to predict such things. The problem is I told the staff, they said they'd fix it, I stayed another four days and the light was never fixed. Had to leave the door open to the bathroom anytime I needed to be in there just to see what I was doing. Terrible.

one of the worst hotels in New York . Stayed there for three days .. Upon my visit to the hotel front desk very rude over the phone and in person.. Did not allow us to check in till 4pm even though the room was ready . When my room was ready we got there the room was filthy and the room was not the room we wanted . So they moved us to another room . When we got to the other room we opened the flip bed and low and behold there was stains of blood and fesses and the room looked like it was never cleaned . Call the manager to the room and guest services manager to look at our findings . And just as we though they had nothing to say but we are sorry . the cleaning crew laughed and told me you guys should stay some where else because they are the worst in cleaning rooms .. when you have your own employees telling you that their own hotel sucks . So they moved us to another room . and it was cleaner . but what a waist of money . Please do not waist your hard earned money on this hotel , very unsanitary and to top it all they charge us for room charges that we never charged.. i will contacting corporate asap .. and the health department ...

HORRENDOUS. Stay away. Old, run down, dirty. Weird people roaming the hotel. Felt very unsafe. Checked out within 4 hours of checking in !!!!! DO NOT GO ANYWHERE NEAR THIS PLACE... the good reviews are fake, especially the recent ones commenting on how good the food is, given there is no restaurant or bar on premises... a joke !!

I would never return to this awful place again. Front desk man lied to me about the rates, moked me and was really rude and prejudiced. The room are dirty, dark and tiny. The worst hotel I've ever been. The prices are exorbitant and the place is HORRIBLE. Don't ruin your vacation: stay away from this place.

The hotel is very well located, friendly staff. Fairly clean in the room at least. It is missing and a lot of maintenance and updating. We booked waiting for an old building but renovated to the NH style, nothing to see! Those who expect an NH experience do not go

I don't know why there are bad reviews, but this hotel was great to crash in while exploring the city. The staff was super friendly. we arrived at 11am ish, and went to see if we could drop our bags off, and we got to check in early. The rooms are clean, shower pressure was great too. I wish the AC was colder, but it was fine. I'd stay here again

Very cozy hotel within walking distance of the Empire. I stayed for three nights at the end of July and it was fine. Room was spacious enough, bright and overlooking the skyscrapers. The decor is a little dated, but the cleaning of the rooms is satisfactory. Very comfortable bed and spacious, new and bright bathroom.
At the reception they speak Italian and are courteous. I highly recommend it.
New York is amazing !!!

It was good overall. I got the 14th Fl., which was quiet and nice. I didnt like being next to the elevator cause of privacy and safety. But it was clean, smelled good and very modern. The was a reasonable size and they give you a discount if you book in advanced. They dont give breakfast. Which would have been great.

It's clean, large (for Manhattan), extremely affordable (for Manhattan) and exactly what you'd expect from a basic/budget room outside the City. If you're expecting the same thing you'd get for this price out in the suburbs, then maybe Manhattan isn't the right destination for you.

This hotel is a great place to stay, it could be walking distance to Times Square (about 15-20 minutes). Check-in experience was quick and easy. Room was rather small, but we really only needed it to sleep so it'll do! The hotel does not have onsite room service, but you can use food delivery services if you wanted to order in or as mentioned above, Times Square is minutes away. I'd recommend this hotel as an inexpensive and safe place to stay. The trade off here is you don't walk out onto Times Square - which may be a benefit lol depending on how you look at it.

From the instant we checked in to the minute we checked out the staff were so incredibly rude. They attempted to down grade us from a room type that what we paid for, and when confronted they had nothing to say for themselves but begrudingly corrected their error. The rooms were okay, but small and shabby in appearance. The bathroom light flickered. There was water damage in the rooms. In addition, the hair dryer didn't work properly, and the shower handle came off. Location was nice, which is most likely this hotels best selling point. At no point during out stay in this hotel did we feel welcomed or anything less than a hassle and inconvenience. I would not recommend this hotel for a trip.
