I have never visited, however I have researched as much as I could about the work being done there. I think it is much needed research in magnetism being done.
But I feel something important is missing from their research. I see no mention of Daniel Mc Farland Cooks patent of 1871, US patent # 119825
.
This patent describes a Electro Magnetic Battery that produces unlimited amounts of electrical power. I would think in this time of energy shortages a facility that specializes in magnetic devices would be in the forefront of investigating a magnetic based device that can produce unlimited amounts of electric power. I hope someone there reads this and starts research of this patent to discover for themselves how it works. It is a simple device in construction, however its operation is some what difficult to understand.
However, I figured out how it works and I am not an expert in magnetism.

I would think a researcher trained in magnetic devices in such a facility could also. I hope so for the good of the planet. I hope this review sparks a interest in this patent at the facility. Thanks Steve

Really fun to visit during their mind-blowing open house once a year. I even won a quarter shrunken down to the size of a dime with immense voltage. I recommend you check out Camp Tesla - one of their summer camps.

Everyone should tour this lab. The guide is amazing. He was patient, gave the group lots of time to look and answered every question. On questions he could not answer he found a physicist or some staff person to provide the answer. There is so much to see!

If you like science and you have a Saturday to spend once a year going to this open house, you need to do it it is neat the kids will love it and they will never forget it. Plus you might learn something too. I know I did

Steve, if there was a way to create even a little bit of energy for free, we would be all over it. I can't find the full text of that patent, but it sounds like one of many older patents with ideas for such things. In physicist's terms, it violates the second law of thermodynamics.

Even if we can't create energy, we can develop ways to store and transmit it more efficiently. The Mag Lab is a world leader in researching and using superconductors, for example. Many of our magnets use superconductors instead of regular Copper wire. It saves a lot on the power bill!

The linguini was a bit overcooked, likely due to the fact that my magnet was resistive rather than superconducting. However all was forgiven as the concierge recommended a superbly paired nanovoltmeter for my application. Also the breakfast bar - or was it the tool shop? - had an excellent selection. Well done NHMFL!

Carlos was absolutely wonderful as we took close to 50 5th Grade students though the lab. The tour was great! The hospitality was fitting and the students learned a lot! Thanks Carlos!

We try to come to the NHMFL Open House every year and find something new and amazing every time. This is a very cool experience for children (and adults) of all ages. I'm looking forward to attending in the future!
