Gorgeous and very nicely situated gallery with an amazing collection, including many very rare pieces! The architecture is spectacular and it overlooks the entrance to the Rideau Canal and Parliament Hill. Absolutely recommend for visitors to the area like myself.

Fantastic selection of varied art, and accommodating to those with mobility disabilities. Shop prices were also surprisingly reasonable even as non-members.

Wish I could take a few of the art pieces home with me on loan, but sadly the security guards would likely prevent me from doing so.

They have a funny sign right at the beginning of their Aboriginal exhibit explaining how there is no word for the concept of "art" in the traditional Aboriginal languages, and yet they have essentially been creating art for hundreds of years. Seems odd to set up an exhibit with Aboriginal cultural artifacts then box it into European "artistic" ideals...oh, they don't have a term for our concept of art, but trust us, they've been doing it.

Great art museum. Full of history as well. I had a great time at it. Each paint or piece of art has a good description in both English and French. Audio guides are offered in both languages too

Really enjoyed the Canadian Art Collection for Canada's 150 celebration!
My favorite was the 40 voice motet by Janet Cardiff in the Rideau Chapel. I also liked the courtyard garden and reflective pool. I felt like I was in an Escher print. Beautiful building. Also, I appreciated the volunteers who are present in the gallery to ask questions to freely. Gained more insight into work as they used tablets to make connections with other artists and history.

Large collection in this museum, the paintings are from various eras and styles (baroque, impressionism, contemporary) which allows you to see everything! Underground parking on site, $ 14 per day. Also close to the center which is convenient!

I love this place, it's one of my absolute favourite museums. It's huge, and if you're taking time to appreciate the art it's nearly impossible to go through everything in one day. There's always a lot of care put into the descriptions of the art, and the building itself feels just as much like a piece of art as the art it displays. There's a lot to appreciate on multiple visits, and the exhibits are consistently interesting. There's usually even some stuff for kids to enjoy aside from the abundance of art.

Water is easy to find in the museum as it's free in the cafeteria and there are a couple water fountains. I did not try anything other than tea from the restoraunt in the lobby, but it was quite nice overall.

To top it all off, the staff are very helpful, always willing to answer questions, and even knowing the exact locations of some paintings.

Interesting works of arts. They have multiple restaurants if you feel like snacking. They keep the gallery quite warm. It was difficult to tolerate at times. Gift shop was moderately priced, which was surprising.

Another enjoyable experience, this time with the impressive Impressionist collection from Denmark and the first-class permanent collection was also worth seeing a second time. All in all - architecture of the building, exhibition rooms, staff - nice museum visit.

We paid full price when half the exhibit halls were closed for redesign. Much of the "art" was laughable... CIA/Soros ugly art, pictures of garbage and other such abstract nonsense. The transgender and pornography themed propaganda passed as art was inappropriate for my young children.

The special exhibition is really good and the European art is Andi delightful. The only thing I didn't really enjoy we the contemporary exhibition but it's more about artistic preferences.

Wonderful art exhibits. Wooden floors which is better for your back when standing for lengths of time. Only draw back back is that the signage to get from room to room is a bit of a maze. A must see for art lovers.

Always a nice place to be. Admission is reasonably priced for what you are seeing. There are no massively famous exhibits but that's not really to be expected in a museum with its focus

The gallery is clean, quiet and well maintained. It's security is nice as they are relaxed and never breath down your neck.

I'd recommend budgeting about 3 hours to see almost everything in moderate depth.

It has a moderate focus on the group of seven and the 3 other famous Canadian artists which isn't to my taste exactly but if you like them then this is your place to be

20190223: Glad to hear that a new CEO has been appointed to lead The National Gallery of Canada. I always like the place and hope a new direction will help attract more Canadians & foreign visitors alike to visit this national institution. I really like their permanent collection & enjoy special exhibits of masterpieces from around the world, esp those from Europe may add.

It is my second visit to the Gallery. General collection is very good, especially selection of Canadian Art, there is plenty to explore here for an art lover -building itself is a work of art. During my second visit I attended Paul Klee Exhibition and Anthropocene - both excellent exhibitions that I highly recommend to visit. Gallery Boutique is great -lots of unique gifts to buy. I will be going back to the gallery every time I visit Ottawa, it is my favourite place there.

Lots of beautiful creativity here. Lovely place to visit whether you're just in Ottawa for a weekend or living here. There's plenty of different installations so you'll definitely find something that interests you.

This gallery has a great collection. Warhol, Monet, and Van Gogh are some of the most notable names on the walls. The new Canadian and Indigenous Art exhibit is stunning. The gallery is the perfect place to spend a rainy afternoon.
