A good place with lot of information to learn about the space and telescopes. One can spend two to three hours going around the learning the different types of telescopes used to watch the space. Located in a very quite neighborhood and covered by lot of trees this is a good place to relax to a Sunday afternoon.

Cherry blossoms are amazing in spring!
You can feel the difference in distance and size of planets in the solar system. The earth is small! The sun is big!

Japan's highest mountain astronomical research institute. You can visit for free. (Parking lot is 500 yen for 3 hours) First, apply for a brief tour at the guard post. A sticker for visitors is put on the clothes and the tour starts. If you have a smartphone, you can use the voice guide of each tour destination. Personally, the solar system walk was interesting.

The site is spacious and you can take a walk. For the tour, it is necessary to make a note at the gate guard and get a visitor seal. All tours are free. Bicycles can be parked in front of the guardhouse. There is a good rest area in the center of the premises for children who are tired of walking. Many of them are registered as cultural properties, and each building is unique and interesting and can be enjoyed by those who love architecture. The solar observatory on the left immediately after entering was particularly interesting, and the person who explained it was also resident, and I was very grateful to explain it carefully. Many of the old equipment was made in Germany before the war.

The staff of the clerk volunteer 's uncle is polite and interesting. Since it rains, there are many mosquitoes, so minus one. Insect repellent essential when you go out. It is also recommended to have a house in the back with a star and forest and a picture book.

If you write your name on the guard, you can see it for free. The green campus is dotted with retro observation facilities, some of which are inside. The free astronomy simulation software Mitaka and the 4D planetarium 4D2U are also interesting.

I attended a Stargazing event. The event was organized neatly, the pamphlets were available in English. There was a presentation given before viewing the stars. The staff were friendly and happy to provide information. There were also small telescopes to view other stars amd the moon.

It is not a museum or an amusement but a handcrafted sense as an active research facility to the last but it can enjoy a specialized exhibition and a history weight as a center of Japanese astronomy

The 4D2U Theater requires reservations, but we could see them side by side even on the weekend!
But there are only 40 seats so it is better to make a reservation.
The 45 minute stereoscopic video was amazing.

If you love space and in the area then it's all worthwhile coming here. It's not massive. They could do it a little better though and have an opportunity to turn it into a tourist attraction.

A short walk away is jindaiji gardens and temple and I would recommend doing all three in the one day. Google maps will help you.

It was due to go to see the tomb inside the observatory yard. You can tour without reservation, but if you try to see it properly it will take one day surrounded by the forest of Musashino, so it seems good to take a walk (12/26/2017)

I participated in a gazebo with my child. Unfortunately, I could not observe the stars because of the cloudy weather, but the children were very excited to see the staff's explanation and the telescope. I want to go there again!

Hello everyone, If you love to see how Japan has developed the Astronomical instruments like huge telescope and other scientific stuff in the past centuries, this is completely the right place for you to get in to. You can touch and see these instruments . Is not is amazing ? Its just 45 minutes in west of central tokyo if you use train. it is located in Mitaka city of Tokyo prefecture.
I had visited this place and found a huge area with green jungle to walk into, awesome ancient buildings used to observe the universe and many other ancient scripture, books etc. related to astronomy. I also enjoyed playing the quiz that would be really fun for kids. There is a cafeteria where you can find really cheap Japanese food menus. You can spend couple of hours easily in natural environments... NO ENTRY FEE , ALL FREE !! ALL 7 DAYS OPEN from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM ......

Anyone with an ID can see it. Different telescopes look different on that day. You can walk to the ground of TAMA300, which was the predecessor of KAGRA (the metal plate shows it). It seems that the 4-dimensional planetarium requires reservations. There are also exhibition rooms with many other parts.

It depends on the weather, but you can see sunspot observations of the sun. It is a reservation system, but there is a 3D image planetarium like 4D2U. It is unbearable to astronomy lovers.

Historic buildings are dotted with rich, old-fashioned coppice forests for a good forest bath. You will also gain specialized knowledge of astronomical observation. Picture book library? I heard that there is a place inside and want to return. It is also suitable for observing various trees and wildflowers, and in the autumn, when you approach the observatory near the bus stop, you can see the beautiful autumn leaves from inside the car and enjoy it, I think that it is a healing space for locals You.

Because it is close to home, I applied for 4D2U, thinking that I go to go to kill time and see.
It seemed to be addicted to extraordinary sickness. In addition, I was handed out the calendar for the next fiscal year.
The teacher of the commentary is also a professional and the information volume is not a huge.
I think I want to go again.
