The United States National Academy of Sciences is a science academy whose members voluntarily serve as "nationwide advisers in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine". Like other national academies in the United States, the existing members of the academy actually elect new members annually, on the basis of their outstanding and continuous contributions in their scientific fields. The election of any scientist to the academic membership is like honoring him, and the membership of the academy is for life. The Academy currently has about 200 members who previously won the Nobel Prize
