Really impressed with the MTR system. Clean and well-maintained trains are very frequent during peak and off peak hours (2-3 mins frequency). Reliability on par with metro systems in other Asian cities (e.g. Taiwan,Singapore) Do get an Octopus Card if you are gonna travel the MTR very frequently

I asked the agent at the airport, what s the best way to use the transport when I only have less than 12 hours (arriving 3pm leaving the city next 9am) to visit HK, she recommended 120HK$ for airport to tsing yi, then 65HK$ For a 24 hour city subway unlimited. Being first timer in HK, I trusted her and bought the tickets. It took me 1 hr to transfer 3 different trains to get to my hotel, when I could just pay 16HK$ for the a bus to take me 10 min walk away From my hotel in 45 min. The city subway is 4-6HK$ per ride. I realized all that halfway using my phone at tsing yi station and went to MTR desk to return the UNUSED day city ticket, the agent there said I can t because I don t have the receipt. I found the receipt in my luggage and went back, and she then told me I can t return it because the plastic packaging is opened, which she already saw the first time. She also educated me: can you return food if you already took a bite? I m not sure what standard of customer service is this here but this is pretty bad anywhere else in developed countries: a city subway provider making customer to pay more for less optimal service and refuse to correct when the customer finds out the truth. Very disappointed at Hong Kong MTR , which I expected to have at least honesty and basic level of customer protection. I recommend people do their own research and do not trust the staff at the airport and do not expected proper customer service.

The easiest way to get around HK. Very user-friendly. But an Airport Express / MTR combo ticket when you arrive at the airport. I wish all city public transport systems were like this.
The underground system is fast, clean, efficient, and a joy to use. Gets you where you want to go easily. Can get very busy but plenty of trains.
