Excellent spot for a glass or a bottle. They have some great beer too but no liquor. Small food menu if you want something to snack on. You don't need to be fluent in wine, the staff are great and will help you decide. Be sure to do a wine tasting on Thursday nights. Lots of fun and educational too.

Great wine selection and surprised to have live piano on Saturday night, but the acoustics are VERY live, which means you hear every conversation and it makes it difficult to talk with your group, even if you're sitting at the farthest table from the music sources.

This place was such a treat. The perfect stop on a Sunday afternoon. We grabbed a couple of the $3 mimosa's, as well as a $4 Belgium waffle with blueberry syrup. It was a delightful short stop in our day, and resasonably priced. I'm looking forward to going back again soon!

MJ's is one of my favorite spots to go on Sunday nights for one reason: Lady Zen performs. She is a great local gem. One of my girlfriends and I love to listen to her soulful voice while enjoying some wine or cider. Another plus is the atmosphere. I appreciate the friendly bar staff and have always been greeted with a smile. I also appreciate not being bombarded with drunk young twenty-somethings tripping over themselves and spilling their drinks all over the place like you sometimes get at other places in the old port.

They have an expansive wine menu ranging from $4 glasses of wine and up (they also have cider and beer). You can choose half glasses of wine as well if you don't want to spend a lot of money and just want a small taste of something. You can also buy wine from the bottle (and get 20% off a bottle of wine if you show the bartender that you checked in on yelp!).

The first time I went to MJ's, I had a groupon for the small cheese plates. It was very tasty! I haven't ordered any food since, because it is a little pricey. You pay $8 for 1 cheese, $15 for 2 cheeses, or $21 for 3 cheeses. You can add on a handful of nuts and/or chocolate pieces for an additional fee ($10).

My only gripe is that MJ's offers wine tastings where you can taste 4 of their wines, but charges $20 a person to participate. There are plenty of free wine tastings around Portland, maybe lower the price a bit?

Yummy cheese, nice baguette, and excellent wines. They introduced me to a new favorite Santa Barbara Pinot (Steele) and also had a nice steely Loire Pinot. Tons of wines by the glass to choose from. Sharp bartenders.

Been here a few times & really like the atmosphere! They offer a limited happy hour and a strong selection of wine from all over the world. The have a small menu with a selection cheeses, olives & nuts but do not offer a dinner menu.

The wait staff is incredibly knowledgeable and super friendly. Parking is challenging on the street near here but plenty of parking garages nearby for easy access.

Great wine selection, knowledgable bar tender made good recommendations. Half pours available. Handful of varied beers for non-wine drinkers. Nice cheese selection with interesting accompaniments.

Very cool and quiet place. Awesome service and they are very knowledgeable. Live music is also great. Would definitely recommend even if you know nothing about wine, they will guide you towards the perfect wine.

Delicious wine, excellent wine maps and great atmosphere!

The bathrooms were excellent. The accoutrements and extra features stood out to me as pure class with the patron's best interest in mind.

Would go back!

The best wine selection in Portland. Right in the heart of the Old Port. Their staff is very well educated about all things wine, and very friendly. When they don't have their record player on, they have a wonderful pianist playing cover songs on the piano.

Nice place to relax and have a glass of wine, the cheese board and other offerings were very good. The owner and staff are exceptional. The locals frequent the establishment and visitors will find them friendly and enjoying the relaxed atmosphere. Close to the Old Port, restaurants and shopping, you will enjoy walking around the area.

went to MJ's on a whim just to have select glasses of wine. Looked at yelp, which i abhor.....they had a few low ratings.....we still went. Paige was working behind the bar. She is about to sit for her second sommelier test. She knew her wine. Had a wonderful Italian flight, great cheeses, and of course great wines. Paige did a fantastic job leading us through Tuscany. Kudos to MJ's and don't miss it. It's not flashy but they had great music and great wine. What else do you want???

The staff were so friendly and helpful, the menu was incredible. I asked for a cheese plate pairing for my wine and it was magnificent. Also the happy hour specials and live music are some of the best in the city. Whether for a small gathering, a date, after work drinks or just a solo treat, this place is perfect!

Absolutely one of the best spots in Portland that doesn t feel like the normal Portland bar! Highly recommended for a nice date spot, or stopping in for a nightcap after dinner, and relaxing on the leather couches.

I loved our wine tasting with Mark for our bachelorette party. He was engaging and sooooo knowledgeable. I learned a lot and drank wonderful wine. Go here for the best wine tasting experience!

They have their own, talented wine sommelier whose never wrong when you ask for a recommendation or a certain taste you're looking for. The team take just as much care in assisting you with your choice which means they're learning from one of the best sommelier's around. It's a great atmosphere if you want to improve your knowledge about wine and they have great seats and tables if its a weekend night. I've always been treated well, learned something new and I love the location. Cheers!

One of the "Top Wine Bars" in America. MJs is a great place to grab a glass of wine or a beer. Classy but casual vibe. MJs has developed some real character since its been open and makes you feel at home.

Great place to hang out with friends after work. It has such a nice and quiet environment that you'll never feel bored even by yourself. Their wine selection was varied and yummy.

Great wines, awesome patio, friendly staff. What more could you ask for? I suppose if I was picking nits I would wish they had a few more nibble options, like charcuterie. But over all I love this place!

MJ's is a terrific experience. On my first visit we really tested their hospitality -- we were a group of 9 celebrating 60-something's, it was late (most of Portland was shut down) and none of us had any idea what wine we needed. Proprietor Mike sat down with us and helped sort out what vino would spark up the finish to our night of wonder. Mike was incredibly knowledge but what was the most helpful was his extensive vocabulary of "taste descriptors" as he explained our choices we actually felt like we were making educated choices: some of us decided we wanted "in your face fruity with raisin overtones" and others "tart. orangey, but not cranberry" ;-) most wines could be tasted before committing to a full bottle purchase. We've already put Beaujolais Nouveau Day 2014 at MJ's on our calendar!

The menu's wine recommendations are really great and always getting updated. The waitstaff are awesome! Attentive, knowledgeable, and polite. They have a wide variety of wines (both in taste and price) so everyone can find something they enjoy. Their cheese plates are great, and the olives are another great wine pairing. It's relaxed, but a nice date night spot or a fun place to get together with friends. The live piano playing is really fun. The bathrooms also very clean and have some useful complimentary items like cotton swabs and cotton balls.
