This is my second year as a K3 Literacy tutor with Minnesota Reading Corps and I love it! I was looking for something fulfilling and that is exactly what this is. I now want to go back to school for early childhood education! Thank you MRC for all your support and giving me this opportunity to do what I love!

I have served as a K3 Literacy Tutor with MN Reading Corps for the past 3 years and am looking forward to my 4th! I served my first year because I was in a career transition and felt I needed to do something different. I continue serve because I really enjoy working one-on-one with kids, watching them grow and celebrating with them their achievements!

The training and support from MN Reading Corps is the best I have ever experienced. I cannot thank them enough for all they have done for me throughout the years! This is truly one of the most caring and inclusive organizations that I have worked for.

I have been a reading corps tutor since the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year. I appreciate the challenges that come with this position because it has helped me become more confident, organized, and patient, in a leadership role that I have come to love! It is not an easy "job". I look at it as a community service opportunity in which I gain ten fold in regards to personal experience, forming everlasting interpersonal relationships and networks in present/future career and community social life.
The webinars and training are great as well! They provide great content for people like me who consider themselves adult learners! I never want to stop learning and growing! Seeing the students progress and being their advocate and teacher has been a gift personally and professionally. If you are on the fence...PLEASE give MN Reading or Math Corps a shot!

I am a current member with Mn Reading Corps, getting ready to serve my fourth year in August. It has been such a joy to serve. Not only due to the connections you build with the students you serve but the other members you serve with. When trying to explain why I serve I am always overwhelmed with emotions. Simply put, I serve for those light bulb moments, that moment after weeks of working with a student on a literacy goal and it finally clicks into place. The sense of pride and joy on a students face makes it all worth it.

Mn Reading Corps provides training and support through out your service year, so you never feel alone. They also have a whole week where they appreciate their service members with games and gathering opportunities. Here in Duluth, we even get a day of recognition with the Mayor!

Serving has played a pivotal role in my life, by giving me a sense of purpose and direction. I have grown and learned so much about myself. I will never forget my time with Mn Reading Corps! Thank you for the opportunity to serve my community!

Do not work for these selfish, greedy people, lacking in common decency and social skills!

I applied for one of the tutoring jobs with Minnesota Reading Corps. I have a Master s Degree in Elementary Education. On The Graduate Record Examination, I scored in the 98th percentile. I had glowing letters of recommendation. They turned me down!

What is wrong with these people!? I called and talked with three different people. What is your problem? Why did you not hire me? None of them gave me an answer. They were all retarded, and none of them were able to say anything intelligent.

I filed a complaint with The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Instead of just giving a straight answer, The Minnesota Reading Corps people * HIRED A LAWYER! * This scumbag lawyer tried to discredit my application! How much did they pay the lawyer!? They certainly paid him much more money than they would have paid me.

I was in Pi Lambda Theta Honors Society! The following is a description of Pi Lambda Theta from Curry College:

Pi Lambda Theta was founded in 1910. Its mission is to honor outstanding educators and inspire their leadership on critical education issues. The most selective society of its kind, Pi Lambda Theta extends membership to students and professionals who satisfy academic eligibility requirements and have demonstrated characteristics of scholarship, leadership and service.

On top of this, some of my research projects were beyond the scope and knowledge of my professors! For Math Methods class, I did a semester project on how math is taught in Japan, compared to The United States and Germany.

I read the letter that someone from Minnesota Reading Corps wrote in reply to Equal Employment Opportunity Commission about my complaint. She let slip that their problem was that I wrote, in my application, that I like to work with bright students! Being intelligent is a * GOOD THING! *

From reading reviews by people who did work for Minnesota Reading Corps, it was quick work to piece together how Minnesota Reading Corps actually works. They hire young students and put them with children who need the most help with reading. They pay the students almost nothing. Their so called stipend is a far cry from enough money to actually live on! Their so called training is minimal, and once the students are tutoring, the receive little to no help from the supervisors.

I worked for two school years at East Side Learning Center. It s a non-profit run by The School Sisters of Notre Dame. I worked at John Johnson Elementary School. Out of the five schools where East Side Learning Center has tutoring centers, this school had the greatest number of children with learning challenges and behavior issues. And even so, some of my students were the best elementary students I have ever seen! Some of them were average, and a few were seriously challenging.

If you need student tutoring experience with reading, outside what your university offers, and you are in or near Saint Paul, it s worth calling East Side Learning Center. You can be a volunteer or work as a paid tutor. They were paying $14.00 an hour at the beginning of 2017.

Or ask around and call around to find a school where you will actually be appreciated, and be paid a reasonable wage.

Please do not even consider working for Minnesota Reading Corps! Your so called job will be stressful. The stipend is not worth your time and effort. And no one will appreciate your hard work.

I am currently finishing my 2nd year as a Minnesota Reading Corps tutor. I was hired right out of high school and RC opened so many doors for me. I have been able to gain experience working with students, make connections with staff and the community, and RC also provided many training opportunities to improve skills. Initially, I went into this job with the idea that I will continue on in the education field. Instead, I am continuing into a communication field of study. RC is a great opportunity and not only for those looking into education degrees. I have built so many skills and I cannot recommend RC enough! The education stipend is pretty great for college students!

Reading Corps is great! I served for a year before student teaching. I didn't feel quite confident enough to head my own classroom. Even though I worked one-on-one with students, I feel so much more confident in my teaching and classroom management abilities. It's so awesome to be able to see the students' progress weekly and be able to tell them how they've improved in a week, a month, or since they started with me! Support struggling readers by becoming a tutor!!

I am currently finishing up my first year as a Reading Corp. member tutoring K-2 students during the 2017-2018 school year. Unlike what the last reviewer said, they do not only accept students as tutors. I am in my late 30's and this is what is going to help me get my foot in the door with my local school system. Your living stipend is not a lot however remember you will also be gaining the experience of being the the schools and an education award.
You really want to make sure that you are not just taking this position on because you think it will be a piece of cake. It is a lot of really hard work but it is also the best kind of work. It will challenge you but you will have many rewards. You will see tears and you will see smiles. It is really a satisfying feeling to know that you are helping a young person succeed. Who knows, you may be helping a future leader of the country, a world renowned surgeon or helping to inspire a child to become a teacher.
This is a great program! The Internal Coach, Master Coach and Program Manager at my particular school are absolutely amazing. I would not trade this experience for the world...I am even coming back next year for the 2018-2019 school year.

Minnesota Reading Corps offers a wonderful opportunity for community members to get involved in their local schools and serve the public. It was so rewarding to work one-on-one with young students and watch them grow and learn, and know that you played a role in that process.
The bi-weekly living allowance, generous health care, and education award (almost $6,000 for full-time members!) helped me immensely as a recent college grad. And my service experience inspired me to pursue a career in teaching. Really, this service opportunity is great for anyone who is looking to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others!

This is my second year serving as a Scolar Coach through Minnesota Reading Corps. The training and support given to tutors is outstanding. What I wasn't expecting was how much I would learn from the students and about myself. It is the hardest, best, and most important work I've ever done.

One of the best life choices I have made was becoming a member/tutor of Minnesota Math Corps. I joined to give back to our community but I received so much more than I gave. I strongly recommend checking into this opportunity to serve our young generation. Join MN Reading Corps or MN Math Corps.

I was scared at first thinking what am I doing I can't teach children. But Minnesota Reading Corps is the best thing I have done. They make it so easy You don't even have to think about what to say it's all written out for you. I was only going to do it for a year and this is my 3rd year. I have even made use of their college education money you get and I will be getting my associates degree in early child education in June. I would recommend it to anyone.
