Grade 1 listed iconic building that has been an important part of the Whitehall cluster of buildings in the heart of London's political system. On one side is the equally important memorial to the soldiers of the great battles that Britain fought in (the Cenotaph) which is always the central meeting place of the Queen and her troops each year and on the other side of the Ministry of defence building is the famous River Thames. Strangely the entrance to the building is along a side road. Strange because so many people don't get to see the grand entrance, flanked by two massive carved statues. This is one building you just cannot afford to miss on your grand tour of London and it's many sights.

This is still a working building housing the Department of Defence so you cannot just walk inside without formal permission.

Somewhat hidden and not very famous to tourists, the UK ministry of defence is a magnificent and spectacular building standing right across the Thames river in front of the famous London eye.

The ministry of defence office has a beautiful garden combined with many statues and gorgeous trees and flowers.

It might not be something that you would find suitable for a mighty defence ministry, but it's actually a stunning place for tourists to take a nice calming break at the garden of the ministry of defence and enjoy your time while visiting central London.

The home of the British Military is something to behold. I can neither confirm nor deny that I had a private tour. However, the building is a formidable bit of architecture which may or may not have reinforced bomb proof windows. My only points of criticism are two fold. 1. Costa should not be present in the headquarters of our defence force....if it is, which of course, I don't know. 2. Needs more guns.

The Monastery of Defiance.

The Monastery of Defiance.
Iconic Grade 1 listed building, designed by Vincent Harris in 1915, on an unspecified number of floors, colloquially known as Main Building, or MB. The King Henry 8 Wine cellars are underground near the North entrance, but you'll need a private official invitation to get to see them so don't hold your breath. Five rooms from various Georgian Houses (Pembroke, Cromwell and Cadogan) were dismantled and incorporated into the building as conference rooms when the houses were demolished, and are now used as historic meeting rooms.
Walk around, count the windows, look for the landing steps that used to lead onto the Thames on the embankment side..... whatever.
