Hard to 'rate' an open pit gold mine, as there are obviously two sides to the issue, but here we go. Yanacocha and Newmont are making an incredible PR push to give back to the community of Cajamarca, mostly through education grants and access to water. While the mine clearly takes a toll on the environment, it is also the main source of income, directly or indirectly for most Cajamarquinos. You can't go anywhere without hearing how the mine is impacting people, both positively and negatively. To Yanacochas credit, when you visit the site, it is incredibly well run; organized, clean and efficient. Contrast that with most illegal mining in the country and it is clearly the better option for resource extraction.

It is Cajamarquino gold, not of Peruvian rest nor for the pockets of those dogs of Congress, they do not give a shit to the owners of those lands.
