Great store, great family, terrible store manager....
Great store, great family, terrible store manager. Very unequal treatment of employees.

Great store, great family, terrible store manager. Very unequal treatment of employees.
Just got accused of shoplifting a piece of crap keychain from this joke of an establishment. Before I share my full story, keep this in mind. After about 10 minutes of research, I found 10+ reviews from other people who have also been accused of shoplifting. This seriously troubling trend tells me that McGuckin management doesn't give a rat's ass about treating their customers with respect. Here's my story:
Two employees followed me out of the store and demanded that I come back inside. As a couple middle-aged managers stared me down with their smug, judgmental mugs, the henchmen informed me that they saw me slip the keychain into my right pants pocket. I said, "You sure about that?" as I emptied everything from my pants and hoodie pockets. Phone, wallet, car keys, and OMG...magically, no junky keychain! I get it. Well, sort of. They probably have to deal with these problems fairly often. But you better be damn sure of yourself before you wrongfully accuse someone of a crime in the middle of your store during busy shopping hours. And if you're going to make that gamble, be prepared to face the consequences of being wrong. Plus, I can think of about 18 better, more tactful ways to go about this type of confrontation. The silver lining here is that they are the ones who look like fools after I proved my innocence and walked out. I'm all for supporting small, local businesses, but I will be going to The Home Depot now.
An absolutely amazing hardware store. The best service you will find anywhere.
McGuckin is a great local hardware store that carries a wide variety items and better products than you would find at the Home Depot. They have niche products for various hobbyists. For example, you can find SparkFun kits and EL wire here.
Used to be better, but still a great place to find almost anything you might need.
I can't think of anyone who doesn't love McGuckin Hardware. This store is simply the best, they have a solution for everything. Just ask one of their knowledgeable staff members if you're stumped.
The Tent Sale is a magical land of wonderful things. Don't miss it.
I always try to shop at McGuckin s over big box retailers even though it s more expensive. It s a fun local store. About a week ago I bought a 5 inch Serissa bonsai - it cost $20 - and there is a no return policy on those plants. I followed the care instructions that the women in the garden center gave me, and the tree is already dead. All of its leaves are gone. I feel like my trust has been broken.
Charged for something I didn't buy and was treated like a criminal... it was a simple annual flower. I bought 2, they charged me for three. Noticed the mistake when I got home and it wasn't a big deal. I was heading back down to the store anyway to return something else, so I mentioned it to the cashier. He needed to grab a manager and insisted of coming over to find out the details or apologize for the inconvenience, the manager ignored me and said she would have to check video surveillance of the transaction... this is a $5 plant were talking about! Not a $5000 gold watch!!! Check video surveillance for a $5 mistake. So, I was left standing there for 20 minutes while they verified that I was telling the truth. When she got back she argued with me that she I was in the wrong. Standing there for 20 minutes waiting for her wasn't even worth $5 of my time! Why would I hatch a scheme to steal a $5 plant? As it turns out, thay had charged me for the correct number of plants, but rang in the more expensive plant for a lesser plant, so either way I was charged the incorrect amount and paid more than I should have and was made to feel like I was in a criminal investigation over a petty $5. The customer service from this rude manager was appalling. 4 generations of family shopping at McGucks for decades, we will never shop in their overpriced store again. You just lost loyal customers.
I always enjoy visiting McGuckin Hardware, it seems like there there are multiple people ready to help you in every department. The McGuckin family has a great legacy.
This place has everything. The service is outstanding and you can bring your dog shopping with you.
Obsessed with this place. No need for any of the big box stores. They have everything and customer service is on point!
They have a really good employee who sells Christmas trees, who I call Tree-Man. Also they have a wonderfully funny selection of humorous magnets.
Count me in the crowd of people impressed with this place. Absolutely fantastic for finding that thing you couldn't find anywhere else, with a large selection of high end power tools and other hardware. They have a lot of different stuff here, but the whole staff seemed extremely capable and knowledgeable about just about any question I threw at them. I can't recommend them highly enough, and I wish there were one closer to home.
Absolute worst and unhelpful customer service I ve ever had from Dan and Ryan in the garden department. First time at McGuckin and never coming back. Do yourself a favor and drive down the street to Home Depot where they care about their customers.
They really love this place. There are so many things to look for, a lot of choices and things to get, they also have an amazing collection of small appliances.
Awesome local hardware store featuring staff with a can-do attitude. Our 2 cats and 1 pup are sure happy this place is so close.
I absolutely love Mcguckin's!! They have a little bit of just about everything and there are always plenty of employees to help navigate the vast selection.
Helpful staff and great place to get keys made quickly and cheaply!
McGuckins is always good. You can find things there you can't find anywhere else. Go to McGuckins just to brows and always find something I can't live without.
Time and again I am impressed by the great service and amazing selection. They're not always the cheapest - but they are competitively priced and it is so much faster to find things there due to the great customer service. This is my first stop for anything they might carry in Boulder.
I love shopping here. The staff is friendly and have always been helpful in pointing me where the stuff I need is!
Huge store with an amazing array of merchandise. Helpful staff, loved it!
I looked desperately for the Ski Lift and found it in Colorado! Everyone who took the time on the telephone, including shipping department were friendly and very supportive, not to say in the least careful of credit card security and so on. Thank you! Your all made my California Christmas Tree turn out amazing!!!
So worth going to. Vastly better than big box. Surprisingly massive. And they carry Bondhus hex wrenches!!!
I left Boulder six years ago and there has been many places in the city that I've missed. Perhaps the place I've yearned for the most was McGuckin. I've since lived in Portland, Southern Oregon, Minnesota, and South Florida and have had trouble finding any independently owned hardware stores, let alone ones with the service and expertise that I found at McGukin. Going back after all these years was like spending a night with an ex that you're still in love with: Great while you're doing it, but often just leads to more pain later when you start to miss them all over again.
I know a lot of people love this store and I am one , I grew up with McGuckin s in Boulder but my story was not a good one . The lack of respect that I was shown while working here by upper management was unimaginable. I was let go on a decision That was based on shopping on the clock when in reality I was helping a customer with an in stock defective product. I took three of these products into the back room to investigate if they were all broken or if it was just one. FYI this was a product that if it malfunctioned while in use it could cause serious injury . With that said they accused me or almost accused me of stealing. The whole incident is on camera through their internal security system. My final analysis is there had to be a need another reason why they let me go but I ve never been given the time of day and don t really care at this point. Not once was I asked what I was doing . Management formed their opinion based on what they saw on camera only which was a very small percentage of what was taking place. If you look at the video without the rest of the story then yes you could make their claim . There are two sides to every story and this is mine and my opinion only.I still love the store and it s a shame that I don t feel 100% welcome there after 30 to 40 years of my family and myself shopping here and two years of working for them. Don t most employers give a warning if they have a problem with your performance and give the employee an opportunity to explain before they just slam down the gauntlet. Very sad that I have this unfortunate incident in my history due lack of communication and rush to judgment. I ve always had Past employers communicate to me that they wish they had 10 more just like me and for the life of me Can t make sense of how my employment came to and abrupt end.
Excellent place to buy and very good attention from the employees
McGuckins spoils me. There are staff everywhere who are eager and happy to help you find something. More than once I have also made use of their knowledge by asking how in hell I could repair this or that. Try that at the Big Orange Cheap Crap from China place.
Love this place! Outstanding service and selection.
Gavin in plumbing helped me out tremendously, was super friendly, and got me all set up to fix a cracked water pipe. The people at McGuck's are always able to help me and when they don't have the resources they try to point me in the right direction. Thanks, guys!
They have everything. Shop local. Mcguckins for life.
McGukin's is a Boulder staple. The staff is so helpful. They have a great selection at great prices. Finding a parking space can be a hassle though.
I just love this place. Can find the vast majority of what I'm seeking. Long live McGuckin's!
You can find almost everything here!! Hard to find parts, if Lowes and Home Depot don't carry it, its probably here. Great customer service always friendly and helpful. Love going here.
McGuckin's still has a great selection and every piece of hardware and hardware hardware oddity you could hope for.
However, I remember when the place was filled with helpful and knowledgeable employees. Over the last ten years, that has changed. The staff is increasingly disinterested and unengaging--sometimes even gruff--and the checkouts are staffed by vacuous college kids. I still prefer it over all the other hardware stores in town; I just wish they could stem the apathy and make the store, which, at one time, felt almost magic--magic again.
I went in for a bolt and the associate that I worked with was completely awesome took the time to find the right Bolt and make sure that it was exactly like the other one.
Excellent service and knowledgeable employees on every aisle
Best hardware/craft/all-purpose store on the planet. Full of employees ready to help you find what you need. A few things are overpriced but in general it's a great place to pick up whatever you need for work around the house.
It's a wonderland. They've got it all, and so far everyone I've encountered has not only been pleasant but they've been super knowledgeable. So great.
If you are ever in the moment where you are thinking "where would I find that?" Don't go to Target. Go to McGuckins! They have everything and more and at reasonable prices. Support local business that really tries its best to support its shoppers.
Hardware and everything else you may need, from art supplies, sporting goods, active wear, kitchen tools, lawn and garden items, pet supplies. The list never ends. They also have an incredible selection of Christmas decorating items each year. My favorite part if the green-vested helpers who work there.
This store has been a staple in Boulder for a long time, with employees waiting at every aisle to help accommodate you. One will never be aimlessly wandering around the store looking for an item unless by choice. Unlike other hardware stores, McGuckin's puts you the customer in the highest priority.
Huge number of choices in every department. Today I learned they picked up the Craftsman tool line which makes me very happy.
Very nice, great selection of hardware and very professional!
best place to shop especially for car products very friendly staff much much better than the home depot highly recommend this place i love it!
This place has the best customer service ever. It is huge and has everything. The workers are very knowledgeable, and when they do not know there is another worker that is 5ft away that knows it.
Better than Disneyland! Changes over the last few years, haven't completely killed the experience, but for decades this place was The Hardware Store of the USA west of the Mississippi
Plenty of staff to help you find whatever you are looking for. The space is huge and the variety available is boggling. I can lose and afternoon here or pop in for some essential thing.
Very helpful staff with plenty of employees to assist all of the customers.
This past Saturday, Jim Carstensen (who was referred to me by another employye named Bill)andDavid (manager) helped fix my broken fishing rod (replacing a broken shaft/top) in the store while also helping me set up a fly and bobber leader to use with my spin cast reel again on the floor. Really great people.
McGuckin's is a bit of a legend around Boulder, and it is -the- hardware store you go to when you need something. It's extremely well-staffed, they treat their employees extremely well, and you'll never have a shortage of help and suggestions for your project when you need some advice. Also keep an eye out for the tent sale, you won't regret it.
The pride of Boulder. Not just your regular hardware store but also very good selection of outdoor, travel goods, BBQ, painting supplies, interesting gadgets, garden tools, pet products and amazing support for your bolts, and nuts in general with friendly service.
Its Mcguckins if you have a problem soneone is always there to help you and the store has a local quirky feel to it. Its not that typical cookie cutter hardware store and thats wht we love it.
McGukin Hardware store is amazing! Always helpful staff. Stock is diverse (they have nearly everything)! A fun store to browse plus a great resource to find that unique hardware item.
Great wood and pellet stoves, we enjoy working with them!
The most incredible Hardware store in the world. I have never seen an inventory like this. Not to mention their shop fixed my favorite floor lamp on the spot for $15.00, all in. Amazing.
They are more expensive than the big chain stores but the staff is much more help
Love this place. Everyone is so helpful and they have everything. A little pricey, but it pays for the great service so its worth it.
Tom was very helpful. He educated me on the 2 types of allen wrenches. Thank you!
The best hardware store in the U.S.A. For certain products they seem to have a better selection than Amazon.
This is something of a Boulder landmark. But it is also a fantastic store. Everything from outdoor gear to kitchen stuff to lighting to screws and nails to lawn and garden. Don't miss the annual tent sale!
Whatever you need McGuckins has it or they will order what you need. I have been using McG's for over 8 years for all sorts of things; from socks and sweaters, to little rubber pieces needed to fix my bathroom faucet. McG's is a wonderful place to just explore, I guarantee you won't leave empty handed. The prices on pet foods and supplies are very reasonable, often beating the competitors in Boulder. Love it. And their annual tent sale is to die for, so many great deals!
Its like every hardware store you've been to but its way better. They have everything you could ever need for anything home related. this place rocks.
Simply one of the best stores I ve ever been to with excellent customer service. Shop here before going anywhere else and you won t be disappointed.
McGuckin s deserves a big applause for treating their customers like royalty. Their Sales Consultants always go out of their way to assist. Icing on the cake is that they carry everything that you need and can t find at the big box retailers. Support your local business!
Had competent staff help me find spray paint at the paints section, but had help from an employee in the automotive parts who made no effort in trying to understand my question, and even mocked the way I described it, so I walked out right away. I like McGuckin s but the customer service needs to improve, or it is evident that the growing competition from Amazon will lead to the store s demise
Possibly the best hardware store I've been to in Colorado. Helpful staff that knows where everything is and will help you actually put your hands on it.
Having grown up in Boulder, McGuckin's has been a staple for me. My father and I would always go to the hardware store every saturday, he would buy tools and i would buy open/closed signs, cause for some reason i was a big fan of those (Call me crazy and I am) but i never had a bad experience at McGuckin hardware
Steve in the lawn and garden section needs a raise! I thought I needed to order a part and he helped me find the right person. Then he went and found the very part I needed. He totally went the extra mile to help me. Thank you Steve!!!!
They have everything you need and people eager to help!
Authentic locally owned hardware store and lots more. You can probably find anything you need here, including very friendly and knowledgeable employees. Hardware (nuts and bolts section ) once boasted over 10,000 items!
I always go here first before the big box stores to support local workers and keep my money in the community. That they have whatever I need is a bonus. Sometimes we just to to learn about products and alternatives to fixing, building, repairing that we may not have discovered yet. Best in the area for sure.
If you've never been to McGuckin's, you need to go. If you don't need anything at McGuckin's, you don't have a pulse. Best place in town to find anything you need. Been going there for 30 plus years and the service is always excellent.
Clean, social distancing and masks in effect!
Staff is always helpful!
FANTASTIC - the service is sooo awesome everyone in the store knows where EVERYTHING is. May be a touch more pricey but sooooo worth it because you save soooo much time and it such a pleasant experience to go in there - all the workers have such great problem solving ideas too
