I was there on Saturday night for a late-night cocktail and everyone went out of their way to make us feel welcomed. Sat at the bar and chatted with Ronn for a bit, who was so friendly. The atmosphere at this place is upscale, but so laid back and comfortable. And the jazz music is great. It was my first time at Mattson & Co, but I will definitely be back. Oh and the cocktail I had (the Stormy Weather) was great too! Looking forward to my next visit.

This was my family s first dinner out since the beginning of COVID. We were all very excited to get out and enjoy a meal. Upon arrival I was very surprised to see that none of the employees were wearing any face masks. But my main issue was the lack of concern that the server showed toward my peanut/tree nut allergy. When I mentioned that I had an allergy the server assured me that he would note it, but when he returned to the table there was no mention that the food was unsafe. I was also surprised that he did not acknowledge that there was a dish on the menu that included an almond sauce. I just assumed that that was the only dish I should avoid. When the food came out there was again no mention of whether or not anything was unsafe, so I proceeded to eat the zucchini flatbread and the potatoes. After a few minutes I started to feel sick and I had to leave the restaurant. I was physically ill but I did return to my group after taking some medication. When someone mentions that they have an allergy, it should be taken seriously. I am very lucky that I did not go into anaphylactic shock.

This place has some of the BEST food out there. Great for a romantic date night or for a brunch with your family and friends (Love the brunch menu!). Lovely patio and indoor dining space. The owner is really what brings the heart to this place. He brings so much passion and care to this restaurant and is the most hospitable owner I have met who goes that extra mile for his customers. He's not afraid to do some of the grunt work himself. He served my date & I a couple of years ago and his warmth, authenticity, generosity, and passion were memorable. Thank you!! All the best to you and your business.

We ordered a bottle of wine and a beer to start the evening, wine showed up...but not the beer...the curry dish was blah, no flavour, lacked life. Curry dishes should pop...this one was lacking. The soups, mussels and beef carpaccio were very delicious. The odd part about the even was when our server was essentially kicking us out. It was understood that we had 2 hours for our table at the time of reservation and we were totally fine with that. However, 30 minutes before "time was up" our server said "you only have 15 minutes before I have to turn over the table so I don't think you guys will have time". Please keep in mind that we had a table for 2 and there was 6 other tables for 2 that were completely empty... nonetheless, we walked down the street, grabbed coffee and dessert in a timely manner. We tipped well and would like to try other options on the menu...but forgeting our drink and rushing us out was not the experience we were expecting

I went for dinner with a friend, recommended something from the menu from the server. It was awful- vegan and way too bland. Had one bite, set it aside. After waiting until my friend was done her meal the server finally came back and asked if we wanted my meal wrapped. I told her I was very unhappy with it and asked for it to be removed from the bill, it was $28.00 and I had one bite... she said the chef does not allow this and she wouldn't even ask them. I didn't feel like making a scene so I paid still tipping the server. She then gave me a card to review them on Trip Advisor... Very confused. Will not return.

Excellent food and service. There is not one negative thing I could say about this restaurant. The short ribs and lamb were cooked to perfection and very flavorful. Mussels and Honey Truffle toast excellent. They definitely made my birthday a special one. Thank you for a great night!

Mattson is always great. We sat on the patio. Our table was well spaced from other tables and when it got chilly, they turned on heaters which worked surprisingly well. The patio was well lit, even when it was pitch black out (and there were no harsh lights anywhere, it was all still very soft lighting). We had the blueberry beignets for dessert and they were delicious. The owner is also very friendly and always chats with us when were there. One of my favourite (although somewhat expensive) restaurants!

Do not go here. Firstly my husband made reservations for my bday dinner over one week in advance and that alone was a big enough red flag itself. We were not even called back and when he called back was treated terribly. When we arrived yesterday for our 8:15 reso they made us stand in the most awkward doorway for about 15 minutes before finally coming to help us. Didn't offer us to have a drink at the bar or anything. When we were finally taken to you table it was literally the one right beside the door...IN THE BAR. Like, are you kidding me? My husband makes a renovation for dinner for a romantic evening and we are stuck in the loud, cold bar? This place is a joke. We asked to speak to the manager who finally came over after another 5 minutes of waiting and he was even more of a joke. Basically told us it was our fault for not specifically asking to sit in the dining room and there was nothing he could do. How on earth would we know we would be sat in the bar if we have never been here???? Ugh! We literally walked out the door and saw a few more people coming towards the door...told them what a terrible place it was with terrible service and they turned around. It is SO easy to give good service....one day this place will realize that and hopefully fire the idiot manager and start fresh.

The food was amazing and the portions are large. I had the braised beef ribs, which were fall off the bone, and covered in the most deliciously rich sauce. My husband had the lobster gnocchi, which was succulent and perfect. We will be back

On September 16, my wife and I attended a birthday...

On September 16, my wife and I attended a birthday party for a friend. I asked if I could order a Sidecar cocktail, even though it wasn't on the menu, and the waiter said he could make it. I ended up ordering two over the course of the evening. We were floored to receive our bill and discover we'd been charged $44 for my two drinks - almost double the price of every other cocktail on the menu.
We assumed there was an error on our bill, since it actually showed that I had ordered 16-year-old Lagavulin, so we spoke to our waiter. He got very defensive, said he had told us he was making the drinks with Courvoisier, and we therefore should have known they would be expensive.
We felt we had been overcharged - I've ordered Sidecars at much better establishments and they have never cost more than $10-$12. Hell, I've been to actual cocktail bars where multi-ingredient cocktails made by professional bartenders have cost less. This was a three-ingredient drink made by a waiter who looked no older than 16, and I'm being charged $22 for it? The fact that they did not even list the correct alcohol they used on our bill furthers our belief that we were overcharged.
The waiter refused to do anything about it. Feeling defeated, we looked at out $180 bill and caved. I handed the credit card over, and he handed the machine back to us with a price of $220. We asked why there was an addition, and he said there was an 18% gratuity added to the bill for large groups. At this point, we are beginning to feel really cheated. At the very least, we should not have to tip if we feel that the service could have been better.
The waiter refused to remove the tip and returned with the owner. We explained that we did not want to tip because we were unhappy with the service and felt we had been overcharged. He responded aggressively with, "The gratuity is written on our website." When we said that we, as guests, didn't visit the website, he was unwavering in his stance that we should have reviewed his site before coming.
The owner then proceeded to start talking down to my wife, telling her it's her fault that she didn't know the price when the waiter stated the type of alcohol. He said he would never tell a guest how much something cost in front of their party, as it would be embarrassing and they "would never want to embarrass anyone with a scene" (said while yelling and causing a scene). We decided to pay our bill with this outrageous tip on top, and let this die into nothing. We processed the credit card bill and it was done. We than began discussing among ourselves the situation.
The owner was listening to it and came over and inserted himself in our conversation, and this is when the evening went from being unpleasant to absolutely abusive on the part of Mattson and Co. He was now behind us, leaning over us and began saying "you can call me whatever you want, it's not going to upset me." He came close to us. Him being as comfortable as he was to be that physically close to my wife shocked me, and I was about to get up and put myself between him and my wife until he quickly walked away.
A friend said to the table "Wow, well that's why I guess there are review sites...", and the owner turned around, came back to the table, came up to my wife's face, and said "YOU CAN THREATEN ME ALL YOU WANT, DON'T FORGET ABOUT TRIP ADVISOR", and walked away again. We responded with a promise to leave a review online about his restaurant.
Other guests got involved and told him he shouldn't talk to us this way or anyone to which he responded "SHE'S THREATENING ME WITH SOCIAL MEDIA". My wife didn't even talk about anything related to social media, it was another at our table. His immediate assumption that the woman was the issue makes me think this man has issues with women.

I want to write more but Google won't allow me because of Character limit. Other review sits have the remainder of the review.

Just, if you care for your pocket book, and your female friends, you shouldn't go to this restaurant.

My husband, father in-law and I stopped in for an impromptu brunch last month and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The waitress, Ellie, was gracious enough to sit us under a large umbrella on the patio since it was such a hot day.

The food was great - their brunch special that day was a pulled chicken waffle and oh my God, so decadent! I had their chorizo "Scotch" egg and loved it. My father in-law had the Mattson Co breakfast and said it was great. His only complaint was the bacon was a bit too overcooked and dry. Otherwise, he enjoyed everything.

The highlight of our visit was Ellie though, she was so talkative and sweet. We are definitely looking forward to coming back for an evening dinner with live jazz. Great little Hamilton gem.

I went here for my birthday a few years ago and I have been going back ever since. The interior is just so classy and crisp. The staff are always so polite and nice. The food is good (8/10), the drink selection could be better. Nevertheless, this place is a nice place to go to for a date or a special occasion :)

Nice restaurant but feels like it's still experiencing growing pains. Didn't have all menu items available for our sitting and they ran out of several wines. Give it a bit more time and this could be 5 star.

We went to Mattson & Co. for a celebratory dinner, and thoroughly enjoyed the service, food, and atmosphere. The live jazz band was quite good (this coming from someone who normally isn't a fan), and our waitress was very attentive and accommodating. The menu itself has a lot of unique items and flavour combinations.

I do think the prices are a bit high here for some of the menu items, but would happily visit again sometime.

This restaurant is not the right place for those who enjoy great wine, delicious food and of course, JAZZ MUSIC. You won t find any of the above mentioned here. The wine list is a real nightmare, with the most terrible choice of VQA wines.
the menu is nothing more than fast food and sport bar-like. The music is simply terrible. In conclusion, if you like to pay high prices for garbage food, drink overpriced & terrible wine and listen to extremely bad music, than that s the place for you. Otherwise, tell all your friends to never put this restaurant on their must visit list.

I called on Monday to make a reservation for my wifes birthday. I left a voice mail specifically asking for a reservation at 7 or 7:30 on Saturday evening for my wifes birthday. I also clearly stated on the voicemail that I would like a call back either way to let me know. I heard nothing still by Tuesday. I called back Tuesday no answer. I decided not to leave another message. I called back again on Wednesday, the phone was answered by a young man, who then passed me off to a woman who informed me that you take reservations in two seatings, which to me shows that they prefer to do what is convenient for the restaurant instead of what is convenient for the guest. I reluctantly took the 8:15 seating. I mentioned to me wife the day of her birthday that I was a little skeptical about my restaurant choice as the service up to this point had been lacking. I also mentioned that some of the reviews were a bit strange. What with the manager/owner berating staff in view of the guests. We went anyways. We showed up shortly after 8. We stood at the door that leads in the bar awkwardly. The bartender saw us and didn't acknowledge us. I went around the corner and saw a young staff member who said somebody would be with us in a 2 minutes. We waited at the door. Next to a four seater table. Literally. One couple was sat ahead of us. One couple was turned away as they had no reservation. We were offered the table in the bar. Which is loud, busy, and directly next to the stairs that lead into the main dinning room, from the bar and kitchen. I asked to have a table in the dinning room. The bar tables are DEFFINATELY different from the dinning room tables. All that I expected was that if I make a reservation for dinner that be in the dinning room. If they were booked so far in advance (which they told us) , and had mapped out who was going to be seated where then they would have known at the time of my reservation that we would be seated in the bar. We told them we were going to leave if they couldn't accommodate us. They couldn't. They made no effort to book another night, they did not show any compassion or seem to be bothered that we were leaving. That is not good customer service. We won't be back. And we will share our experience with our friends. As this was our experience.

Booked a 18 person reservation. 2 people did not show up. We were charged $40 per person that did not show up. The owner himself said they were "to busy" and publicly announced other tables bill totals around us to justify this rediculous policy. Seriously? Get it together guys. I have brought clients and family to your restaurant for the last 2 year's consistantly. I will never be back or recommend this place to anyone again. Saying your "too busy" and are losing money by our 2 guests not showing up really shows that your focus is not on customer relationships, or the experience, but squeezing every dime out that you can, while you can. Between my wife and I and all of my referrals I have sent to this restaurant for work, the amount of money spent is astronomical compared to the $80. I am honestly shocked that as a business owner you decided that was the right call to make. We chose you over other top end restaurants in the area that we have gone to time and time again, to celebrate this important milestone in our family. Very frustrating and petty. We will be Informing our 16 guests of this experience. We hope the $80 was Worth it.

Take a tip on Customer service and proper manageme...

Take a tip on Customer service and proper management from Aberdeen Tavern.

Let me begin this review with our reservation experience. I had called Mattson & Co on Friday December 1st to make a reservation on Saturday December 9th for my husband company Christmas Dinner for 6:00pm. I was told over the phone that the reservation would be from 6pm-8pm as they have their second setting at 8pm. To confirm, I asked So even if we re enjoying desserts and specialty coffees, we would be asked to leave at 8pm?? . The answer was yes as this is their policy and 2 hours is enough time?? Against my better judgement and because one our party members really wanted to try Mattson s Gluten Free menu, I called back and made the reservations for 8pm to avoid being rushed out of the place.

Our party of 6 headed down Locke Street to Aberdeen Tavern. In hind sight, I should have just made our reservation with them to begin with. We explained the events that had just occurred up the street to our hostess. She was not even close to being as shocked as she explained, I was certainly not the first to complain about the customer service and rudeness of the owner of Mattson & Co.

Aberdeen Tavern s Manager greeted us and apologized for our bad experience and mistreatment from their competitors. We had drinks while we waited about 10-12 minutes for our table (without a prior reservation). Once seated the manager came over again and said the cost of our appetizer was on them due to our horrible experience at Mattson & Co!!! So my advice, avoid Mattson & Co and go to Aberdeen Tavern (or anywhere else on Locke for that matter!).

We are foodies and picky eaters and we can honestly say that this is one of the best restaurants in all of south-western Ontario. This is our "go-to" place for special occasions, anniversaries and family events. The menus are so creative. Every course (appetizer, main, dessert) is mouth-watering and prepared to perfection. The chefs are very skilled. The servers are top notch. The owner Ron is so welcoming and always goes the extra mile to make his customers feel welcomed. We were THRILLED to have our FIRST post-COVID dining experience there today (take-out which we ate on their patio with social distancing). Absolutely everything we ordered was delectable. Ron has maintained his high standards. We will definitely be back.!

Sometimes I get drunk Fancy and I also sometimes need to lay down some base before I really go out drinking and even in the winter Matteson is a solid place to come.

Split level, plenty of glass and natural lighting exposure, a small raised patio is great in the summer. The entrance is tucked on the side in the lower galley near the bar and bathroom. Up a few stairs takes you to the main dining room which is dimly lit, white table clothed affair and a small alcove stage for live jazz and blues. The name reminded me at first of Matty Matheson, but this is not Parts & Labour, then I got to thinking Matteson, jazz, YES, Carrie Mathison from Homeland. Yeah the spellings are all different, but anyhow.

It s a good place for food, drinks, live music. Try and reserve the atrium. The staff is good from bar to servers, met a few of them later for drinks. The manager took our coats and did a good job running the show. Some well experienced staff and some not so experienced. All in all it s somewhere between Aberdeen Tavern and Rapscallion.

First off the owner is one of the nicest guys ever. Going to fancier restaurants as a younger person sometimes you can feel a weird energy like you don't belong, this was the opposite. The duck is hands down the best meat I've ever eaten. Perfect golden crust around the most tender delicate meat. Oh its served on the best potatoes I've eaten as well. Definitely a new go to in the city. Beautiful patio dining in the summer. Check my reviews its hard for me to give out 5 stars, but this place was one of them ones. Thank you.

And the Food was DELICIOUS: from start to finish our tastebuds were delighted with rich flavours. Wow! Perhaps the worst dining experience I've had. That's saying a lot. Our group of 4 unfortunately chose the early seating at 6 pm on Saturday night. Our table- precariously squeezed in close to the stairs, wasn't ready at 6:15. The service was very intrusive. We were interrupted so repeatedly it became a joke.
It was very evident throughout that we were to be gone by 8:00 for the next seating. We understood that when we reserved. But it bordered on rudeness, how we were rushed.
Two stars for the food. It was the only redeeming feature. Very good, well presented and enjoyed by all.
But not enough to earn repeat customers or to outweigh the overall terrible experience - at over $100 pp.
