About Marei
MaREI: The World-Leading Research Centre for Energy, Climate and Marine
MaREI is a research centre that focuses on energy, climate and marine studies. It is coordinated by the Environmental Research Institute (ERI) at University College Cork in Ireland. MaREI has been recognized as one of the world's leading research centres in these fields, with a team of over 200 researchers working on various projects.
The centre's main objective is to develop innovative solutions to address global challenges related to energy, climate change and marine resources. MaREI aims to provide sustainable solutions that can help reduce carbon emissions while promoting economic growth.
Research Areas
MaREI has several research areas that focus on different aspects of energy, climate and marine studies. These include:
1. Renewable Energy: This area focuses on developing renewable energy sources such as wind, wave and tidal power.
2. Energy Systems Integration: This area looks at integrating renewable energy sources into existing power grids.
3. Marine Renewable Energy: This area focuses on developing technologies for harnessing the power of ocean waves and tides.
4. Smart Grids: This area looks at developing smart grid technologies that can help manage electricity demand more efficiently.
5. Climate Change Adaptation: This area focuses on developing strategies for adapting to the impacts of climate change such as sea-level rise and extreme weather events.
6. Blue Economy: This area looks at promoting sustainable economic growth through the development of marine resources such as fisheries, aquaculture and tourism.
Projects
MaREI has several ongoing projects that are aimed at addressing global challenges related to energy, climate change and marine resources:
1. Ocean DEMO - this project aims to accelerate the development of ocean energy technology by providing access to test sites across Europe.
2. H2020 MARINA - this project aims to promote responsible innovation in the field of marine biotechnology.
3. H2020 OPERANDUM - this project aims to develop tools for managing natural disasters caused by extreme weather events.
4.H2020 Tidal Turbine Power Take-Off Accelerator (TiPA) – TiPA will deliver an optimised electrical infrastructure solution which will enable tidal turbine arrays up 100MW capacity be deployed cost-effectively
5.H2020 Ocean Power Innovation Network (OPIN) – OPIN will create a transnational network focused upon accelerating ocean energy technology development through knowledge sharing & collaboration between SMEs & other stakeholders across Europe’s Atlantic Arc region
6.H2020 Blue-GIFT – Blue-GIFT will support demonstration activities related ocean renewable technologies in real-sea conditions along Europe’s Atlantic coastlines
