My husband and I took our first belaying lesson yesterday with Kevin, and it was AWESOME!!! First of all, their location is amazing, once you parked, you will see a beautiful view of the Golden Gate Bridge, you could feel the breeze from the bay! All of their staffs are very friendly and professional, they sure know what they are doing. We learned all the belaying basics and safety during our 1 hour lesson. Clear instructions. I would definitely come back with my friends!

Quarantine business practices have gotten extremely shady. Started charging me without warning or receipt and could not get any answers as to why.

Edit after response: Their team ignored all of my e-mails and attempts to resolve and I ended up having to dispute with my credit card company.

This gym is ok but the only issue is that I have is the phone because when I try to call them about working as a lifeguard for the pool they don't answer there phone and that's why I give three out of five stars

Swimming for babies review: WOW. It's so cold all the kids are miserable and shivering. We paid a crazy cheap price for swim lessons ($170 for like 8 of them), but the catch? It's SO COLD our toddler was miserable. We made it to 3 and then decided we couldn't put her through it anymore. The teacher was great, but wow. She couldn't even move. We bought her a wet suit and she was still purple within the first half. At our home swimming pool, she puts her head under and jumps off the side into the water. Here she could only scream: "get out! Get out the pool!" Wasted money, but we didn't know it was SO cold until after we paid and tried to handle it.

Just joined. The facilities are nice, but not into the customer service. I wish they wouldn't be so condescending to me, like I speak English. I do, ok?!? It's just that I just joined, so I dont know where everything is yet, jeeez!!!! Please stop treating me like I can't speak English, thanks!

Cool Gym I went for acro-yoga and stayed for rock climbing afterwards! Very good experience! Prices are low, especially if you are student! Parking is hard, but possible to find... highly recommend

Love this place. Great pool. Never too crowded. The best tennis program in the city. 5 indoor courts. Someone complained about several flights of stairs to get to the gym. Give me a break! A little stair climbing is a good workout.

A great gym in Hell's Kitchen. Has classes, a pool, a climbing wall, indoor tennis courts. Seriously, what more can you ask for?

Personally, I'm here for the climbing gym, particularly the bouldering area. The holds change pretty often so it never gets old.

Membership prices are pretty reasonable and inline with other gyms like New York Sports Club.

For the past 30 years on and off, I have been a member of MPHC. And while the classes offered, leadership and instructors have changed, as well as some of the rules and membership prices, the club's pristine accommodations, cleanliness, safety and upkeep has been a top priority. I find that very important and impressive.

I was a member of the Manhattan Plaza Health Club climbing gym for a year. I learned to rock climb, but spent the majority of my time bouldering in the back. The staff is so great and helpful, not intimidating at all. The regulars are like a big supportive group of friends, cheering each other on and helping you reach your goal.

I really liked climbing here. It isn't huge, but they change the courses often enough with a variety of difficulty levels, so it remains challenging and new each time you go.

I like the facility, but do find it unfair that the are closing for 2 weeks and not offering any kind of reimbursement or freezing of the membership. I'm expected to pay for 2 weeks of the club not being available.

Great place to climb; staff is always ready and willing to help! Great routes to challenge yourself!! It s best for Bouldering and to bring kids is super friendly and less scary than some of the walls at LIC or Chelsea.
Definitely 5 .

With the membership being over-priced and the customer service as pathetic as it is, I strongly advise you to not waste your hard-earned money here. SWINDLING COMES BEFORE HEALTH AT THIS CLUB!

Good variety of free weights and equipments, pool, steam room, sauna and whirlpools. They have a good number of classes all day. The locker room is well kept and clean (the men's locker room at least). The price is not absurd given the amount of amenities that are included (note that rock climbing and tennis are extra) and the best thing: the gym doesn't get too crowded.

I absolutely love this place! It s definitely one of those high end gyms that are not commercial yet like NYSC and Crunch. They have all the amenities you could want and more. From a well equipped weight/cardio room to a full schedule of classes to a swimming pool to a rock climbing area, they have it all! There s even a health food cafe downstairs where you can relax and decompress! It s an absolute fitness haven!!

I moved from LA, where I was a member of Sports Club LA - the best of the best with a saltwater outdoor pool and a split level deck with cabanas. Wanting to find something similar downtown, I checked Equinox on Hudson St. - great roof deck, tiny pool; Chelsea Piers - impressive, if pricey, and Manhattan Plaza.
I joined MP for its pool, with a glass bubble top whose panels open to the sky. MP also has two jacuzzis, which bubble. (Equinox has none; Chelsea Piers has one which does not bubble). The L-shaped roof deck is oversize, and the attendants bring out your lounge chair. Very nice.
The other plus is the mix of people - from little kids with parents through to retirees to yuppies like (blush) myself. You also have a mix of races, religions, orientations, and cultures, making Club membership a reflection of the city's middle class. Everyone is very friendly - from the front desk to the members. If you are a hermit seeking solitude, this is not the place for you.
Also, MP rents out towel and lock, so I stuff my swimsuit in a pants pocket, and off I go, minus gym bag.
The reason I do not rate give this place excellent is that the locker room is just okay, with no shavers or shaving cream. The shower stalls date from the 50's and do not provide shampoo and conditioner, though I am told this may change. The weight room is in a basement with no windows. I weight train elsewhere, however, so this is not a problem for me. I have not yet tried rock climbing.
Altogether, this is an authentic, friendly place, a throwback to older times, with a dash of yuppieism. And the pool, which gets to 12 feet deep - how often do you find that? - is uncrowded, even on weekends.

Great gym! Has the most professional and courteous staff in the area. The receptionist Daisy is the most skilled and knowledgeable worker there. She is a joy. The gym has a wonderful pool and an amazing climbing gym.

Specifically my rating is for the climbing gym (I haven't tried the rest of the facilities). It's small, but the routes are challenging and it never seems to be too busy. The people there are really friendly too, so it's a nice atmosphere. My favourite place to climb in the city.

For an inner Manhattan gym, the price is competitive. Usually a long wait for the pool. Classes are mainly offered during daytime, not many after work options. Cardio equipment is new and kept updated.

MPHC is an oasis. My favorite part is the pool & outdoor deck for summer, but pretty much everything about it is great. There are some really fantastic teachers/classes . Yoga, Water exercise, Pilates and Stretch are my favorites. I feel so lucky to have such a great facility close by but I know scores of members commute from all parts of NY even NJ just because the facility is so great. Staff is friendly and helpful. Pretty much anything you could want is there--climbing gym, spin class and on and on. Great place!.

If you're looking for a luxury gym this isn't the place for you. If, however, you're looking for a good gym with lots of options for a reasonable price then it's a great option. Large pool, rock wall, cardio, training floor, sauna and lots of classes. The staff at the front desk are always super nice and helpful and trainers are great as well. Sometimes the training floor can be a bit busy since it's a little small, but it's usually not an issue. Showers and locker rooms aren't luxury but the reason you're here is to workout right?

I've been coming to this gym for about 8 years now. It has good classes and pretty friendly staff. Sometimes the trainers on the floor help you out if you're doing something wrong that could hurt yourself. I chose the gym for the large swimming pool in the atrium that has a jacuzzi. There are also saunas (wet and dry) in the locker rooms which is a great treat after your swim. There is also a small climbing gym upstairs.
The only downside to the gym is the turnover of really good instructors due to low pay and a policy that says they can't miss more than a certain number of classes in a row.

Rock Climbing gym is so cool! Took Belay private with Janelle. Listen!!! She s the sweetest. I had a great time, got rid of my nerves with her help and now I m Belay certified. Definitely worth it! The staff and facility is great. I ll be back.

I have nothing but good things to say about this place. People complaining about the price ? The stairs? Seriously?! YOU GET WHAT YOU PAID FOR great amenities, great workout studio classes, pool sessions, staff etc visit the gym and see for yourself. I have nothing bad to say. Eric was wonderful he broke down everything I needed to know about my membership, gave me a very thorough tour around the gym and answered any questions I had. Also met with me 3 days in advance from my actual appointment to see the gym! If you need someone to talk to about joining thats your guy! Thank you so much you all are awesome!

My favorite gym in the city so far. Good student rate with an NYU affiliation, great perks. Dry sauna, steam room, pool, hot tub, climbing gym, and unlimited classes. I couldn't use all the things I have access to if I tried. Great deal, awesome location.

I am a resident of Manhattan Plaza, 400 W. 43rd. 10036 and have been since 1977. I have concerns about recent decisions that have been made in our complex that are arbitrary, unsightly & effect us all here.

Our lobby for more than 40 years has always been welcoming and beautiful. Just recently there have been some alarming changes to the lighting and appearance of the front desk area and entrance. Blinding white lights have replaced the subtle elegant theatrical lighting in the entrance that we once had and a carpet, a relic of the 1970 s, is now covering the beautiful polished brick in the entrance. I have written letters and called Rima El Atrache, Related Management's representative here in the building over the past month and she never returns my communications.

I have since written to Gustavo Lopez, the general manager of our building, as well as the two heads of the maintenance department and no one will address the issue or even respond.

I would like the name of someone in the Related organization who will take the problem seriously enough to respond to me.

If the problem is a case of changing to energy saving lighting, there are energy efficient light bulbs that are less terrifying. If you must keep the ones you have there is always the simple addition of a rheostat (Dimmer).

I am not alone in my disbelief at this transformation of a once elegant entrance into one of a Carnival Attraction.

This is not merely a case of a minor inconvenience the building entrance has taken on all of the charm of a check-cashing kiosk and not a place anyone would like to visit. The 10th Avenue building of our same complex, 484, is not as yet afflicted by these changes. Soft amber lighting remains there for now. If anyone knows who is in charge please advise me of whom we might contact and what action we can take to return our home to the one we love an

This gym sucks to the umpteenth letter! The staff are a bunch of uppity, pompous, assholes and the gym equipment are not maintained well, especially the leg press machine, which needs to be oiled. The leg curl machine is of the stand up variety, which totally blows, you have to walk three flights down to get to the gym. Forget leg day, you won't be able to get up the stairs. For the price you pay for this dumpy gym, you're better off joining Mid-City Gym, which is more than half the price cheaper, better equipment and better maintained. This gym is a sorry excuse for one and only douche bags frequent there. Save your money and go out for a jog.

My gym instructor always delivers a challenging workout that will renew confidence in your body and lift your spirits. After five years of hard training from fat to fit, I'll never leave her! Keep up the good service!

I'm only a member at the MPHC Climbing wall so that's all my review is based on. The good-The climbing wall itself is excellent. Nice bouldering routes, good overhanging and slab boulder problems. The staff is friendly I suppose, just don't ask for a belay.

The bad- A belay certification test is expensive here and the staff will not belay you. So how do you get on a rope without breaking the bank? This place is already $70/month. I've only bouldered here although I've been dying to get on their lead wall. Which I'm assuming also costs more money by way of a "lead climbing test." In my opinion this place is the best but everyone knows it. It's packed out on the weekends and weekdays after 5:00

I am member for many years and considering to stop my membership. Cause they keep closing the gym for 2 weeks just to change lobby and I had to pay for these weeks. How you can keep changing what is already have been changed last year. They should change showers and what it really needs to be change. Stuff is very rude lately. Lifeguards don't really do their job , usually they just stand and talking with each other. One time I got screamed by other member of this gym to solve this problem I asked a lifeguard to help me but no one helped me , he seemed careless. I don't feel safe in this gym anymore. I am very sad what happened with my favorite gym. I am member more than 6 years. I keep closing my eyes on everything but can't take it anymore. It's just not worth it. I come to the gym to relax but lately I leave the gym very stressful .

Lovely staff and regulars - so so friendly. But the climbing gym is tiny and really cramped. That is reflected in the cheaper membership than most climbing gyms in NYC, but giving it three rather than four because it's not beginner friendly, and because I felt unsafe on the walls in the first room. I'm sure it's actually safe, but the padding seemed thin, the holds slippy, and the hard floor too close.

As other reviewers have mentioned, it's largely for intermediate climbers who want to tackle tough climbs with a small group of regular visitors. Perfect if that's what you're looking for. Otherwise I'd avoid. (Except for the pleasure of meeting a load of lovely climbers.)

Small but great gym. Not best for the beginner as it's mostly a bouldering gym with v3+ climbs. Great for intermediate and advanced climbers. Routes updated frequently. They don't have as many routes as they used to, but still plenty for me to keep up with.

I really like the equipment, everything is well maintained. The trainers are really helpful and will answer any questions. In the summer, the roof deck is fantastic. It's not glamorous but the pool is so nice.

I ve been a member for over 30 years and it s like heaven on earth. Amazing classes, staff, teachers, massage therapists, trainers, quiet room, state-of-the-art equipment, and world-class pool make Manhattan Plaza Health Club a blissful oasis in the middle of the busiest city on earth. I doubt I d survive without it here.

This place was great. The facilities were clean and just as advertised.

The people were far and away above and beyond. They were welcoming, informative, and just all around excellent people.

Shooting for the hip, Jordan, Tara, Missa, and Deborah helped us from our 1st call all through recommending dinner options nearby. They were patient with us and our kids.

We had a chance to climb at the gym as well. Jude, gave us the overview and made sure we were settled well. The routes were challenging and made great use of the space.

I can see why all the members seemed so happy during our visit.

Great place, highly recommend.

I love this gym. She may not be the prettiest girl at the dance, but she ain't uppity. Compared to most manhattan gyms, this one is a steal for the amenities relative to cost. When I tell people what my membership costs and what I have access too, I usually help pick their jaws off the floor.
