With its diverse range of exhibitions and events, Manchester Art Gallery has become a hub for artistic expression and cultural exchange.

The History of Manchester Art Gallery

The history of Manchester Art Gallery dates back to 1823 when the Royal Manchester Institution was established with the aim of promoting art education and appreciation in the city. The institution held regular exhibitions showcasing works by local artists as well as those from other parts of the country.

In 1882, the institution acquired its own building on Mosley Street which became known as the City Art Gallery. Over time, the gallery's collection grew significantly through donations and acquisitions, including works by renowned artists such as J.M.W Turner, John Everett Millais, and Dante Gabriel Rossetti.

In 1954, a major extension was added to the gallery which provided more space for exhibitions and storage facilities. Today, Manchester Art Gallery is one of the largest public art museums in England with over 25 galleries displaying more than 13,000 artworks.
