Three star hotel in a five star skin. It's in a great location, it's very grand looking and the architecture of the building and design of the public spaces are very nice - but this hotel never felt like a 5 star experience. Rooms are fine, though basic and lacking any real mod-cons. Everything looks a little dated. The air con system has an annoying auto shut off and rattles at high speed. The main bar is surprisingly small and under stocked, the staff couldn't adjust the aggressive air con in there for the many guests who asked for it to be turned off - only maintenance can we were told, and they leave by 6pm! The staff were nice but struggled to keep pace with requests as the waiters roamed the grounds delivering to guests while coffees and food cooled on counters waiting to be served. We had no real welcome or instruction when checking in (hey we can figure things out but i mean nothing was pointed out, not even the restaurant). Our bill was wrong at checkout as the Spa and Hotel use different systems to cross charge, others queued with the same complaint. The breakfast was a let down. You'll join a queue to get a seat for starters. There's a decent continental spread in a nice setting and you can order specific items - but friends, a few tureens awkwardly placed in the corner (where you queue around other tables) holding wet scrambled eggs, pallid sausages and bacon and some mushrooms - is not five star. That's building site cafe style. For the money (it was pricey) i expect more, and suspect most people would too.
