About LREI
Welcome to LREI, a progressive independent co-educational school in New York City for children in preschool, elementary, middle, and high school. LREI stands for Little Red School House and Elisabeth Irwin High School. The school was founded in 1921 by Elisabeth Irwin and a group of parents who wanted to create an educational environment that would foster creativity, critical thinking skills, and social responsibility.
LREI is located in the heart of Greenwich Village on Bleecker Street. The campus consists of several buildings that house classrooms, science labs, art studios, music rooms, a theater space, a gymnasium with an indoor pool and rooftop playgrounds. The facilities are designed to provide students with ample opportunities to explore their interests and passions.
At LREI we believe that education should be student-centered rather than teacher-centered. We encourage our students to take ownership of their learning by asking questions and seeking answers through research projects or hands-on experiences. Our teachers act as facilitators who guide students towards discovering knowledge rather than simply imparting it.
LREI offers a challenging academic program that prepares students for college-level work while also providing them with opportunities to pursue their interests outside the classroom. Our curriculum includes traditional subjects such as English language arts (ELA), mathematics (math), science (biology/chemistry/physics), social studies/history/geography/civics/government/economics/politics/law) but also includes courses in visual arts (painting/drawing/sculpture/printmaking/ceramics/photography/film/video), performing arts (theater/dance/music), world languages (Spanish/French/Mandarin Chinese/Latin/Greek/Japanese/Russian/German/Italian) physical education/sports/nutrition/wellness/yoga/mindfulness/cooking/gardening/environmental studies/community service/global citizenship).
We believe that diversity is essential for creating a vibrant learning community where all voices are heard and respected. We welcome families from different backgrounds regardless of race/ethnicity/nationality/religion/gender identity/orientation/socioeconomic status/disability status/language proficiency.
Our commitment to social justice is reflected in our mission statement which states: "LREI educates students to be independent thinkers who understand the power of community." We encourage our students to become active citizens who advocate for positive change both locally and globally.
In conclusion, LREI is more than just a school; it's a community where children can grow intellectually/emotionally/socially/spiritually while developing lifelong friendships with peers from diverse backgrounds. If you're looking for an educational experience that values creativity/critical thinking/social responsibility/diversity/social justice then look no further than LREI!
