I have been a volunteer at the LIS Veterans Home in Stony Brook for 11-12 years now. I believe the care and concern of the staff is excellent and sincere. The biggest compliment I can give the Vets Home is that if I ever need to go into home THAT is where I want to be, no ifs ands or buts.

I ve got the inside scoop! Being a volunteer at LISVH I ve observed excellent care. They not only have outstanding medical care but they also nurture the mind and spirit. Caring and dignity is shown to the residents and compassion to the families. I ve done a lot of research into skilled care facilities for placement of my Grandmother; if she would have been eligible I would not have hesitated to have had her reside at LISVH. At LISVH know that your loved one will be well taken care of.
After my wife passed away as a result of her being diagnosed with Alzheimer's, I decided to use that experience to spend meaningful time with others in the hope of making their lives a bit easier. Being familiar with the reputation of LISVH, I thought I'd give it a try. I'm starting my 4th year as a volunteer and my expectations were exceeded by far. I work with the most caring and dedicated individuals I could ever wish to be associated with. My own life is richer because of my contact with others at LISVH.
I have been a volunteer at the Long Island State Veterans Home for 15 years. Before my parents passed on I had to make arrangements for them in a nursing home in their final days. I was satisfied with the services but if I had had the opportunity I would have preferred a home like the LISVH. One could say in the sense of the word home the LISVH is the best. Nothing is spared in trying to maintain an atmosphere of a home away from home. The quality of care rendered to residents is of the highest standards be it medical, physical or occupational therapy. To foster a spirit of comradie among the residents the recreational therapy offers residents multiple areas of activities giving them the opportunity of joining one another. The musical entertainment offered many times per month stokes many memories of years gone by as does the enjoyment of a rousing game of balloon volley ball and the exuberant shouts of bingo for a winning card. And so many residents look forward to the many trips planed for them be it shopping, theatre, restaurants, fishing, baseball games, Belmont Race Track, just to name a few. I have known many residents over the years and have observed that following an initial period of worry and concern attached to the realization that they require permanent nursing home care they are happy they are receiving it at the LISVH where they feel at home rather than just at a nursing facility. I am humbled and proud to serve all our heroes here at the home.
My husband resided here for the last eleven months of his life. We knew he needed skilled nursing and couldn't have found a more vibrant facility where he was always treated with great care, respect and dignity. We knew we had made the right decision and appreciated how much the quality of his life had improved while he resided here.
I am enjoying volunteering at the Long Island State Veterans Home because I get to make people smile and offer a great suggestion for any magazine and books. I'm very happy to work with such amazing people.
The people who work there are dedicated to providing excellent 'care for their patients. The home offer various activities, including rehab, resulting in An excellent nursing home enviornment.
