My husband and I went to Legume for the first time for Cheap Date Night (first Wednesday of every month), and everything was delicious! You really can't beat a 3 course meal for $25 per person. The service was great, and the host was very friendly and welcoming. We will definitely be back soon!

Ordered the Duck Leg Confit with rice grits, sour cherries and sugar snap peas. Best duck I've ever had. Leg and thigh served on bone (but slid right off with a fork) with skin still on and nice and crispy. Rice grits were seasoned perfectly and I've never had such plump and juicy sugar snap peas before. Cocktails and dessert were spot on too. Fantastic meal.
Great place to grab a craft cocktail. I always go for the "mercy of the bartender". Bartender gets to be creative and you get to try some crazy good beverages.
Excellent dinner and service. The food was fresh and perfectly prepared, waitstaff were attentive yet unobtrusive and the atmosphere was fun and relaxed. Recommended.
A bit overrated. Food was good, but *very* limited food menu. Service from the bussers (water refills, food delivery, etc.) FAR exceeded the service we received from our server. Extensive wine menu.
It's nice, fine dining. However, IMHO you can get better quality food at a much better price point. You can also have a server who doesn't scowl, even at much lower prices.
Overall I want to like Legume. The people at the front desk are friendly and helpful, and the food is good. However, I think the price misses the mark, relative to the caliber of the dishes served. I'm completely willing to pay higher prices... but I want to say "Wow!", not "That was good."
Great place! All of the vegetables were amazing, even the chickpea stew, which had enough spices and greens to be delicious, and the borscht and steak tartare were even better (the kitchen had run out but was able to make us a half-portion). That brings me to the service, which was excellent. Our server was incredibly fun and helpful with my food allergies, and an expert on the food. The wine list had a lot of great options, and the cocktail bar next door is a great place to hang out before or after dinner! My only quibble would be with the dessert--the pavlova was overbaked and far too sugary, making it very dry. Overall though, a great experience; we'll definitely return the next time we're in Pittsburgh!
If you want fine dining experience in Pittsburgh, this is definitely a place that you don't want to miss out. The only thing I think is not up to par is the decor and staff. The staff are a bit too casual and the theme of interior design is neither consistent nor complementary to the natural/fusion theme of the food.
The service and menu here were both great. Our meal was delicious and satisfying (especially the bok choy) but unsure if it was good enough for the size of the final ticket. Our server seemed to be stretched a little thin for most of our visit, but we never felt neglected or forgotten about.
Eh. The menu didn't appeal to me. Lots of foods that were fancy for the sake of being fancy. What I wouldn't have done to see a hangar steak on the menu! And the service was a disappointment. Everybody took themselves very seriously. That said, desert was awesome! And it's nice inside.
Very very unique foods, not sure all would enjoy the mix. But still found some nice fish that had a great taste. A bit on the expensive side, but didn't seem to bother the many people that were eating the night we were there. Do call ahead to avoid the wait. Very difficult to find parking unless you don't valet.
I noticed they hired a new Chef de Cuisine this month so I had to do some research on just what a Chef de Cuisine does (it's the French version of the English Executive Chef, if that helps). Evidently, they pretty much run the kitchen chefs and plan the menu and ensure proper plating.
Fantastic meal... the steak was wonderful and huge. The veg was grilled perfectly. And the cocktail was wonderfully warming. The wait staff was very attentive.
I love a restaurant that not only creates a incredible menu and atmosphere, but one that takes care of its employees.
Every meal I have ever had here has been top notch! Even the simplest sides are perfection. So when I found out about the Maine Shore Dinner we were in!
The lobster boil was out of this world! What better way to enjoy lobster, knowing every other table is elbow deep in butter and succulent lobster meat! A spectacular meal and a memorable night out!
So delicious and so many unique dishes to choose from. If you're interested in farm-to-table, paleo, or tasty vegetarian plates, I recommend coming here. Food is a little pricey, but the quality/experience is worth it.
Easily the best meal I've had in more than a year. Incredible food, served by friendly, fun but non-intrusive staff. Moderately pricy, but very, very under-priced for what you get in terms of flavor, appearance and portion size. I will be back, again & again.
The wonderful food compensated for the indifferent service and bland atmosphere. The corn soup, goat cheese crostini and sea bass were absolutely fantastic. The upside down cake was great but the peach crisp was only so so. Still, overall, Legume is definitely worth a visit.
I will unfortunately never know what the food tastes like due to their terrible reservation cancellation policy which I was unaware of at the time that my Husband made our Valentine's Day dinner reservation as a surprise without my knowledge. It wasn't until our credit card was charged $60 that I learned they have a $30 per person cancellation fee if they can't refill a reservation which is very high and really unfair considering that we weren't given an option to reschedule our reservation date or informed of the $30/pp fee ahead of time and I was feeling very ill which I didn't anticipate. There is no information posted about this policy on their website in the faq section or before you complete a reservation. I would avoid them unless you're 100% certain you can make it.
I didn't get a chance to eat dinner here I only had a cocktail and some tallow fries which were good but the menu just didn't appeal to me. Maybe it's great for other people but to see almost three entrees with the exact same sides....it's very disappointing and in my opinion a little lazy. Not knocking this place would like to give it another chance when I'm in town again but a little upset I left hungry
Great service, food and wine suggestions. We ordered the steak and was a chewy, which was clearly written in the menu, however it wasn't worth 40+ dollars.
We live just blocks from The Butterjoint and go here at least a couple times a week for drinks. My hubby has asked them repeatedly to carry Di.Saronno amaretto. They did one time and never again. A couple of the different bartenders told us "no one else likes it or would order it". You would think being regulars, they would take our request into consideration....
Legume is fine dining at it's best. Their menu is always above par and they really know what they are doing. They source locally, portion sizes are great, and they are fairly priced. On nights their bar "The ButterJoint" offers amazing apps, drinks, burgers (tempeh & beef). If you've never been, go, and you will not be sorry.
The meal was amazing! There was not one weak point. The kitchen paced out the food impeccably, there was just a little time to chat between dishes. We had a beautiful progression of food from light to our heavier picks. The cantaloupe was amazing, very unique preparation. Another unique choice on the menu was there vinegar pie, the balance of sweet to tartness was wonderful. It really gave the dessert depth. The Beef and Kim Chi soup was outstanding as well, with heat, sweetness, and a hint of fresh cilantro, I thoroughly enjoyed every bite!
Amazing place. Absolutely incredible. Food is outstanding and the service is amazing. Highly, highly recommend. I went on a Monday evening and it was top of the line-I'm pretty sure it was the best meal I've ever had. I can't say enough great things about Legume.
Amazing food and service. They time out everything nicely so that you don t get overwhelmed. Very cool atmosphere inside. The food and drinks are impeccable. The bruschetta and hamachi were my favorite appetizers. I will definitely be returning.
Legume was my favorite restaurant in Pittsburgh and it will surely be missed. I'm looking forward to their next venture. Many thanks to Legume and their entire staff. All the best moving forward!
Entered the restaurant with a party of two and the server told us they only had two food options available and the rest was unavailable. The food may be good though I never got a chance to taste it because of the lack of options.
I recently had a lovely date here. The waiter, Duane, seemed to really know his way around the menu, so we completely ceded control to him and he brought us his favorite dishes. Best idea, ever. He brought things I wouldn't have thought to order--roasted escarole? Amazing. It was a culinary journey!
The food was delicious. It was fine dining with a down to earth atmosphere. The service was timely and courteous. The menu shifts a bit with the season so you're always getting good in-season and local ingredients. We came in the spring, so my mackerel dish featured sauteed ramps and a spinach puree. The fish was cooked perfectly and the ramps and spinach were amazingly flavorful, complementing the fish wonderfully. I also got to try the beef tartare and the hamachi crudo and both are fantastic options to start your meal. This restaurant seems to be on many lists of great Pittsburgh restaurants and the reputation is well deserved. Highly recommended!
My usual pre-dinner Legume ritual involves pouring over their website and menu to plan my visit. I noticed they hired a new Chef de Cuisine this month so I had to do some research on just what a Chef de Cuisine does (it's the French version of the English Executive Chef, if that helps). Evidently, they pretty much run the kitchen chefs and plan the menu and ensure proper plating.
Loved every part of the experience. The ambience was great; not too stuffy or loud. My lovely date and I had the tartare, swordfish, and duck confit. Everything was frickin awesome. We capped it off with two stellar desserts and good coffee. I can't say anything negative about the meal we just had. Total bill for two was $135. This includes cocktails, starter, two entrees, two desserts, coffees, and a above average tip for our great server. Totally worth the price.
I had previously frequented Legume for their Date Night special that they host once/month (typically the first Wednesday). This used to be a reasonable deal, with an appetizer + entree + dessert + one beer or wine - for two - for just $50. Not only was it a great value, but there were many great options to choose from (3-4 appetizer choices, 3-4 entree choices, 3-4 dessert choices, 10+ beer/wine choices).
More recently, the last Date Night I attended (6/1/16), I was disgruntled to find that patrons were now offered only 2 choices for appetizer, 2 choices for entree, 2 choices for dessert. Indeed, my date and I were able to order by saying "We'll take one of everything". Not only were there fewer choices, but they were much, much different from the food we're used to receiving at Legume. For instance, one entree turned out to be an embarrassingly tasteless rendition of chicken cacciatore, reminiscent of something out of a Betty Crocker box. Compounding the aforementioned issues, you no longer receive a glass of beer/wine with the Date Night special -- instead, you are now given 1-2 beer choices to choose from, at just $1 off of their normal price. That takes the cost from $50 up to $60+ if all you get is a single drink, each.
A minor issue in light of the above, but we also ordered an additional appetizer from the main menu, expecting that we would be undersatiated. We asked if it could be brought out with our other appetizers, which we were assured was no problem. They never did arrive as such, in spite of the fact that we were one of maybe 3-4 tables left in the restaurant. When our entrees finally came, we had to ask about the appetizer's whereabouts. We were assured it would be up in just a couple minutes, and our appetizer finally did arrive just moments before our desserts.
I really wanted to like Legume, and they were starting to win me over for a little while, but with these recent changes to the Date Night specials and poor quality service at times, I cannot possibly justify spending $60+ to bring my significant other here. Simply put, there are much better places to spend your $60 if you're looking for a date night with some drinks. Shame...
Great place to relax, people watch, eat good food or all the above. Definitely worth a return trip. Atmosphere is similar to a place in Columbus I loved.
For the price, it seems a little disappointing. The duck confit was a bit dry. The lamb steak, while tasty, had a sauce that was overly sweet.
A lack of attention to detail, like serving us fries that were essentially the crumbs at the bottom of the bin. They made efforts to make it right, but it felt like the place was a bit casual for the cost.
