I really enjoyed eating here. They have a lovely menu that changes frequently. It is ramp season, so there were lots of dishes with ramps. Particular standouts were the skillet chicken, stinging nettle soup and the vinegar pie. The beef tartar was delicious. I'll definitely be going back, and you should too. Oh, and the tables are beautiful, raw edge wood slabs. The service was excellent, we had a great running dialog with our server all night long.

Although I found the food to be just...good. My then girlfriend however seemed to inhale it. The service and decor were above exceptional. I had asked them for several request in order to make my date really special and they went out of their way to help. Turned out to be a majestic evening for me -_^ . The food may have been a tad overpriced IMO, but for the service I am quite glad I selected this restaurant. Under the conditions I had to repeat the day through some time paradox, I would select the same restaurant for my date.
Decent food and great cocktails, but unfortunately quite awful service. My wife found a shell in her entree, and we understand stuff will happen from time to time, but when informed the waitress didn't even apologize. In addition the waitress got several other orders wrong and didn't express any remorse. Unfortunately the food wasn't good enough to overwhelm the bad service and warrant a return trip.
I recently returned to Legume for the first time since around 2007, when I ate at the old location in Regent Square. The new space is much larger, and the restaurant has a significantly more upscale ambiance from what I remember. There is also now an attached bar area (called Butterjoint) which offers beers, wines and cocktails with your dinner. I believe the old place in Regent Square was BYOB, so that was a pleasant surprise.
The wait staff were very friendly from the outset, and we promptly were served water and offered drinks. We ordered appetizers and entrees, and received fresh baguette that was still warm to eat while we waited. Someone was always by to refill our waters, and we were offered a refill on bread several times.
We both had the gazpacho for a starter, which was delicious and served with a dollop of ricotta cheese in the center, and came with a toasted crostini.
My entree was a chicken breast, which was wonderful and very juicy, which was served with crispy polenta, kale and beans. My wife had a crispy polenta entree that was served with greens and vegetables over it. I tried hers and it was delicious as well.
Parking across the street was only $2 with valet service in the Sterling Plaza Garage.
All in all, it was an excellent experience and we would love to return again sometime soon.
Legume has been pretty hit or miss for me. Occasionally the food tastes like it's made with sub-par ingredients (at the risk of sounding haughty). I wouldn't get the burger again, as it was really gristly when I got it (twice - to make sure) but the pierogies were amazing, and the desserts were really good too.
It's nice to sit down for lunch or dinner, and they have really good drinks from the bar-portion of the restaurant next door, Butterjoint.
Reservations are recommended. The place is popular and gets crowded during peak dining hours. Service is not fantastic, food is alright. Maybe I am not into fine dining and found the place too dark for dining comfort. May be a good place for wine and drinks with friends.
The restaurant is a good, but I did not find anything that stood out. The decor is forgettable and the food was as well. While I would not say anything bad about the meal, there was nothing spectacular. The fish was cooked properly and the sauce for the fish was flavorful. Same can be said for the chicken, but nothing stood out as a reason to come back.
The Allegheny cocktail was very nice, strongly recommend. The goat shank was tough and chewy, and the truffle fries were soggy and undercooked (the server did say that they were having fryer issues). The ravioli were rich and tasty but drowning in a pool of butter. The atmosphere was pleasant and quiet. Overall, the drinks from Butterjoint (the attached bar) were a big highlight, but the quality of food just didn't justify the size of the bill.
The food was pretty ok. Everything being local is kinda cool. It's not something I am passionate about so to me it wasn't worth the premium. The staff provides exceptional service.
Went to the pub next door that Legume is attached to (and technically part of). They have a pretty small alcohol selection. The food is good but it's pricey to get anything but a burger. Very cozy and nice atmosphere though.
We enjoy the service every time. Nice pleasant atmosphere and the menu changes. I prefer the 12 oz steak and my wife a chicken or vegetarian dish. The only thing that I would change is the valet parking acriss the street. I don't like to wait 5 minutes for them to bring my car.
The meal was excellent. It was a great feeling to be catered to and have adult conversation without being at a bar. They were accommodating to the pickiest of patrons(my wife ) and adjusted both the entree and dessert for allergy constraints. The waiter was knowledgeable and attentive as well. The steak and chicken dishes with the sauce... magic.
The food selection on the rooftop bar is minimal, mostly bar food - like Jerky, and small snacks (not burgers, or anything like that) I wish that the restaurant allowed food from the other 2 floors to be brought upstairs. I'm a wine drinker, for $10 you get a tiny mediocre wine, but that's an expected price for downtown!
I was very disappointed in Legume, a restaurant often mentioned at the top of "best restaurant" lists in Pittsburgh. A new chef has taken reign in the kitchen, but Legume's weaknesses go way beyond a change of chefs.
Pittsburgh has issues with restaurant staffing. That was obvious in just our four day visit. The kids hired to commandeer the front have no clue what they're doing, and assign tables with no rhyme or reason. That also happened at Legume, and we switched tables a couple of times.
Legume is not an attractive restaurant. With an ugly suspended ceiling, the cavernous space looks like a banquet room in a Holiday Inn. Seat cushions had horribly disgusting stains, as pictured. Nothing has any sense of style. It's bar next door is an infinitely nicer space.
Our server was odd. He emphasized what was missing from the menu, and his suggestions really had no culinary basis. In other words, "That's a popular choice," says nothing about the preparation. He went missing for inordinate amounts of time, and if it wasn't for Dorian our busser, our dinner may have lasted days. Dorian should be promoted to manager of Legume.
The food tasted less than mediocre. My Raclette, made with cheese from Vermont, was incredibly bland. There's a purpose for a pungent Swiss Cheese usually chosen for a Raclette. It tastes good!!! The chicken liver mousse was overwhelmed by an accompanying currant jelly - very odd. Kielbasa is soul food for people from Wisconsin. Legume's version had no soul. It was as if John Denver sang "RESPECT" instead of Aretha. No thank you. My trout was salty, bland, and literally tasted more like salmon than trout. Maybe that's because the trout was Scottish and wore a kilt.
Legume was not good, not fun, and a horrific choice for our last night in Pittsburgh. Legume left us a bad memory and a bad taste of Pittsburgh. My bad.
This place is slickly decorated and the menu looks great, but these items are massively overpriced for what they are. The duck was nothing special and tiny on the smallest wisp of a bed of grains. My daughter got the lamb and was exhausted by the time she finished attempting to extricate the small amount of meat hidden between the huge fat layer and the bone. For all of you who will think I just don't know "sophisticated" food, I can tell you we resided in France for 5 years where I learned how these dishes would have been executed in a fashion consistent with their price. Desserts were great, but by this point in the meal, I already had a bitter taste in my mouth.
Excellent food and wine to accompany which the waiter suggested. We had a great time with friends, our waiter kept us entertained and our service was great. A little expensive but worth it.
Truly a great Pittsburgh restaurant. We go a few times a year and weirdly, I am always ho-hum when I see the menu. But whatever I order, it is always perfectly prepared and wonderful. Most recently enjoyed the Scottish Trout and sumptuous desserts.
Not only is the food at Legume fresh and delicious, but most folks miss the bigger picture: legume tries new things! Of all the farm to table restaurants, legume innovates new dishes and tastes while keeping some seasonal favorites. Hooper and crew are inventive. Couple this with good wine and creative spirits and Their patrons win.
We will definitely return! The food was delicious and what we ate had a little bit of a twist to it! It was surely TOP CLASS!!!! I highly recommend this place!
Lovely little place. Ravioli was tasty . The carrot and pickled daikon was a real treat...the kind of a culinary surprise that makes you stop and close your eyes to appreciate it. Dessert was also excellent. Service was flawless. Definitely well keep this on my list of upscale places in Pittsburgh to visit again.
Over the top...delicious! A five star plus. The mushroom risotto topped with so many meaty-texured mushrooms was uniquely prepared. Shaker corn side was innovative and tasty.
The food was great. The restaurant very approachable. I had the black Manhattan to drink. If you like spirit forward drinks, this is your jam. It's smooth and satisfying. We started with the squash blossoms which were interesting. It's basically fried flower petals. Really cool. Next we had fries and cold asparagus soup. Fries were normal. Nothing special. Soup was on point. Highly recommend.
I found the restaurant interesting. The menu was very limited. 4 dishes to choose from on the menu & a special. I was particularly disappointed in the appetizers. The main course was good, not great. The wine was fantastic as was their coffee. I enjoyed our server & the ambiance which was highlighted by spacious seating. Be sure to be at least 6'2" if you plan on using the men's urinal.
Location is a but tough. There is a parking garage across the street. Expect to pay about $50 a person, which for fine dining is not bad. Food was amazing and the wait staff was phenominal.
