About Laura's house
Laura's House is a non-profit organization that provides emergency shelter, counseling, legal support, batterers intervention program, outreach and education to the community on the effects and prevention of domestic violence. The organization was founded in 1994 by Laura Khouri who was a victim of domestic violence herself. She realized that there were very few resources available for women and children who were fleeing abusive situations. So she decided to start an organization that would provide them with a safe haven where they could rebuild their lives.
The mission of Laura's House is to change social beliefs, attitudes and behaviors that perpetuate domestic violence while creating a safe space in which individuals and families can heal from the trauma of abuse. The organization has been providing services for over 25 years now and has helped thousands of women and children escape from abusive situations.
One of the main services provided by Laura's House is emergency shelter. They have two shelters located in Orange County where they provide temporary housing for women and children who are fleeing from domestic violence situations. The shelters are staffed 24/7 by trained professionals who provide emotional support, safety planning, case management services as well as basic needs such as food, clothing etc.
In addition to emergency shelter services, Laura's House also provides counseling services to survivors of domestic violence. They have licensed therapists on staff who work with survivors individually or in group settings depending on their needs. Counseling sessions focus on helping survivors heal from trauma caused by abuse while also empowering them with skills necessary for rebuilding their lives.
Legal support is another important service provided by Laura's House. Survivors often need legal assistance when dealing with issues such as restraining orders or custody battles etc., so the organization has an onsite legal clinic where volunteer attorneys offer free legal advice to clients.
Batterers Intervention Program (BIP) is another service offered by Laura's House which aims at breaking the cycle of abuse through education and accountability measures for perpetrators of domestic violence crimes. The program consists of weekly group sessions over a period of 52 weeks which are court mandated for those convicted or charged with Domestic Violence offenses
Outreach programs are also an important part of what Laura’s house does. They conduct educational workshops throughout Orange County aimed at raising awareness about Domestic Violence among different groups including schools, colleges, businesses etc. They also participate in community events like health fairs, festivals etc.to reach out more people
