About Lancaster County Historical Society

Lancaster County Historical Society: Preserving the Rich History of Lancaster

Lancaster County Historical Society, also known as LancasterHistory, is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich history of Lancaster. Founded in 1886, it has been serving the community for over a century by collecting and exhibiting artifacts, documents, and other materials that tell the story of this historic region.

The museum is located in downtown Lancaster and features several exhibitions that showcase different aspects of local history. One of its most popular exhibits is "Native American Voices," which explores the culture and traditions of Native Americans who lived in this area before European settlement. Another exhibit called "The Conestoga Wagon" tells the story of these iconic vehicles that were used to transport goods across Pennsylvania during colonial times.

In addition to its exhibitions, LancasterHistory also offers tours of President James Buchanan's Wheatland. This beautiful Federal-style mansion was built in 1828 by William Jenkins Worth, a hero from the Mexican-American War. Buchanan purchased it in 1848 and lived there until his death in 1868. Today, visitors can tour Wheatland's elegant rooms and learn about Buchanan's life as a politician and statesman.

But perhaps one of LancasterHistory's most valuable resources is its Research Center. This facility houses an extensive collection of books, manuscripts, photographs, maps, newspapers, and other materials related to local history. Researchers can access these resources for free or hire staff members to conduct research on their behalf.

One unique aspect of LancasterHistory is its commitment to engaging with diverse communities within Lancaster County. The museum hosts events throughout the year that celebrate different cultures represented within this region such as African American History Month or Hispanic Heritage Month.

Another way that LancaterHistory engages with visitors is through educational programs for all ages including school groups or adult learners interested in learning more about local history.
