KlezCalifornia: Connecting People and Communities with Yiddish Culture
KlezCalifornia is a non-profit organization that aims to preserve, promote, and celebrate Yiddish culture in California. Founded in 2003, the organization has been a living resource for people of all ages and backgrounds who are interested in learning about the rich history, language, music, dance, literature, and art of the Jewish people.
At KlezCalifornia, we believe that Yiddish culture is not just a relic of the past but a vibrant part of our present and future. We strive to create opportunities for people to engage with this culture through educational programs, cultural events, performances by world-renowned artists and scholars.
Our mission is to connect people and communities with Yiddish culture by providing access to resources such as books, films, recordings; organizing workshops on topics ranging from language instruction to cooking; hosting concerts featuring traditional klezmer music as well as contemporary interpretations; sponsoring lectures by leading scholars on topics related to Jewish history or literature.
One of our most popular programs is our annual Klezmer Workshop & Festival which brings together musicians from around the world for an intensive week-long immersion in klezmer music. Participants learn from master teachers who share their knowledge of traditional melodies as well as new compositions inspired by contemporary trends.
Another program that we offer is our Yiddish Conversation Group which meets regularly for informal conversation practice. This group provides an opportunity for learners at all levels – from beginners to advanced speakers –to practice speaking Yiddish in a supportive environment.
In addition to these programs aimed at adults learners or enthusiasts of Jewish culture more broadly defined , we also offer educational programming specifically designed for children. Our Youth Scholarship Program provides financial assistance so that young people can attend summer camps or other immersive experiences where they can learn about Jewish traditions while having fun!
We are proud partners with many organizations throughout California including synagogues , community centers, and schools. We work closely with these partners to create programming that is tailored to the needs of their communities.
At KlezCalifornia, we are committed to making Yiddish culture accessible and relevant to people of all ages and backgrounds. Whether you are a seasoned klezmer musician or someone who is just curious about Jewish history, we invite you to join us in celebrating this rich cultural heritage.
