The Jamalpur factory was established on 8 February 1862 as a locomotive workshop of the East Indian Railway (E.I.R.). The factory has successfully completed its glorious 150th year in 2012, facing various challenges and keeping pace with the changing times. Although there were more factories besides this factory, Jamalpur was the headquarters of the Locomotive and Traffic Department of the East Indian Railway. The Jamalpur shops were mainly entrusted with the task of connecting and maintaining the steam locomotives of the East Indian Railways and the re-design. It executed the task assigned to it in the best way and established its own international standard. The entire equipment and plants of state-of-the-art machines have been installed here for the manufacture of iron sleepers and other track fittings, point, crossings and singling and interlocking and other ancillary parts.

About Jamalpur Railway Workshop

Jamalpur Railway Workshop: A Legacy of Excellence in Indian Railways

Jamalpur Railway Workshop is a renowned railway workshop located in Jamalpur, Bihar, India. It is one of the oldest and largest railway workshops in India, with a rich history dating back to the British era. The workshop has been an integral part of the Indian Railways for over a century and has played a significant role in shaping the country's rail infrastructure.

Eastern Railway was formed on 14th April 1952 by integrating the East Indian Railway consisting of Sealdah, Howrah, Asansol and Danapur Divisions and the entire Bengal Nagpur Railway. Later on, the portion of BNR stretching from Howrah to Visakhapatnam in South was also added to Eastern Railway. Jamalpur Workshop came under Eastern Railways after this integration.

The history of Jamalpur Workshop dates back to 1862 when it was established as a small repair shop for steam locomotives by East Indian Railways. Over time, it grew into one of the largest workshops in Asia with state-of-the-art facilities for manufacturing and repairing locomotives, coaches and wagons.

Today, Jamalpur Workshop is known for its expertise in manufacturing diesel-electric locomotives that are used across India's vast rail network. The workshop also manufactures various types of coaches such as AC Chair Car Coaches (ACC), Second Class Sleeper Coaches (SLR), General Second Class Coaches (GS) etc., which are used by millions of passengers every day.

Apart from manufacturing new rolling stock items like Locomotives & Coaches; Jamalpur Workshop also undertakes periodic overhaul maintenance work on these items which includes complete dismantling & re-assembling them after thorough inspection & replacement/repairing wherever required so that they can be put back into service again with full efficiency.

The workshop employs thousands of skilled workers who are trained to handle complex machinery and equipment used in locomotive production. These workers undergo rigorous training programs that equip them with advanced skills needed to manufacture high-quality rolling stock items that meet international standards.

Jamalpur Workshop has always been at the forefront when it comes to adopting new technologies and processes that improve efficiency while reducing costs. The workshop has implemented several initiatives such as Lean Manufacturing Techniques which have helped reduce waste while improving productivity levels significantly.

In addition to its core activities related to rolling stock production & maintenance; Jamalpur Workshops also provides ancillary services like fabrication work including wagon body building etc., casting work including wheel sets etc., forging work including crankshafts etc., machining work including axle turning etc., electrical repairs including rewinding motors/generators/transformers etc.; all under one roof making it an integrated facility capable enough for providing end-to-end solutions related to Rolling Stock Maintenance activities.

One unique feature about this workshop is its heritage museum which showcases some rare artifacts from its past glory days along with some modern-day exhibits showcasing latest technology being used currently at this facility.

In conclusion, Jamalpur Railway Workshop stands tall as an epitome of excellence when it comes to rolling stock production & maintenance activities within Indian Railways ecosystem; thanks largely due its rich legacy spanning over more than 150 years coupled with continuous upgradation efforts undertaken by Eastern Railways management team over last few decades making sure that this facility remains relevant even today amidst ever-changing technological landscape around us!
