I only saw it from the Bath-to-Freeway, but it is a strange sight in the desert area, and some of the towers that collect the sunlight were intense, unusually shining, `` If it was craved there I feel like I'm going to die. Unlike ordinary solar power generation, it seems that the mirror collects the sun's light to activate the boiler and the steam power moves the turbine to generate electricity. It is a system with low efficiency in Japan and the UK, and it may be a power plant unique to that place.
The next time I go, I'll make a request for a scary thing that I would like to see more closely.

Big money wasted ,1000 birds dead ,i try to connected with google but they dont wanna know ....i have ideas for cheaper and green energy . A lot of room wasted too. if someone from energy company or google wanna discuss replay me back

Another gimmick by people who don't want to know the real truth. They live in a fairy tale where they are the heroes trying to save the planet from the evil people who only care about money. Everybody loves this planet, nobody wants to pollute it. Can't we come together and agree on that?

I think it would be nice if they would put some sign on the highway, explaining what they are (how cool) and providing a rest area for the curious. I can see how it can be a distracting traffic hazard. Awesome. Would love to visit.

Awesome! Need more of these and eliminate nuclear, oil refineries, coal, and natural gas pipelines! Would love to see more wind farms as well (and no, they don't cause cancer lol!)!

Every change generates a reaction in CO2 and climate change kills more than 5000 million humans on the planet, the expenses caused by hurricanes, Sunami tornadoes, loss of human life and fauna due to contamination of radioactvifad carbon, mercury, oil, oceanic extraction and heavy metals edge of the collapse to our planet that is no longer blue but reddish and desert and black because of the pollution of carbon petroleum uranium carbon dioxide then it is time to change the fossil fuel to leave something to our children and contaminate the air the water the forest the oceans then if we continue with the car of gasoline or acpm and do not welcome the electric or solar that encode us as animals send extinction

What a shame that more and more of the beautiful desert (and this spot was particularly lovely) will be destroyed and its ecosystems turned into biological dead zones so that the ever-increasing horde of wasteful humans can satisfy their insatiable need for convenience and energy conglomerates can roll in the profits. Enjoy it while you can, folks. The Mojave desert will be one huge solar farm in 100 years. And once you wreck it, it will never, ever come back.

Nice! I like this. Pure use of sunlight for energy. Most people don't realise that PV cells actually result in a depleted material and so are using earth's reources. PV cells still rocks, but I like this for its purity.

- 1 for possible avoidable enviro impact as follows:

In some other reviews people claimed large numbers of birds are killed per year - one person said 20,000 per annum.

I don't live in the US so I haven't read anything about this issue before coming across the project, but I do note Wikipedia cites a study conducted by biologists on the issue. That study seems to have reported 290 bird deaths in 5 months in the area, about A THIRD of which were attributed to the "solar flux" from the Ivanpah. That suggest an annul average of about 240 birds killed by the project. If this is wrong, someone should update Wikipedia.

While seemingly much less than some amounts claimed, it seems those deaths still could be avoided or significantly reduce by employing one of any number of avian deterent strategies common place these days. Indeed it is not clear whether any measures have been implemented since.

I deducted 1 star because of this lack of action - whether just past or past and present.

Amazing! Great to see that companies, government and the people are still willing to take risks and experiment with new future technologies! And by the way, we kill 23 million chicken every single day in the US, more than 200,000 wild birds are killed by hunters every single day. Not to forget the wildlife killed by nuclear waste in the future, oil drilling and mining. I believe we can spare 9,5 birds a day for the sake of the future of humanity.

Ivanpah's colling ponds atract ravens. Ravens eat baby tortoises The heat from the "solar flux" is killing like 40 birds a month: that's a lot of birds in the desert.Google's investment in Ivanpah bulldozed desert habitat and has already sickened and killed the endangered resident kit foxes and more tortoises than they promised, by far. And it It feeds the mega-rich power grid, doing nothing to change the way we ship and consume energy. California DENIED permission for another one of these monsters: the damage outweighs the benefits. There's a better way: everyone in California with a roof can have solar, and bypass the utility companies. GEt off the interstate and take a walk in the "desert." Not a wasteland, a space to be protected and appreciated, not raped for Google-grid power.

Extensive and unbelievable space, solar panels and light pillars that even in the light of the day from miles away, you can not see them directly and without glasses of smoke. The initiative and the admirable ability of human beings who extract the energy of purity from the desert.

A nice stop just outside of Primm, NV - an especially interesting site for people like me not originally from the Southwest! You can drive fairly close to the actual plant (via the exit to access Primm Valley Golf Club) and the roads are in fair condition. A marvel of clean energy, for sure!

A new type of solar power plant that uses mirror reflection high-temperature power generation (CSP).
However, the price of traditional silicon wafer batteries continues to drop, which is lower than the CSP method. Become a history of excessive power plants.

Who cares about thousands of dead birds EVERY YEAR...

Who cares about thousands of dead birds EVERY YEAR directly due to this place, so long as the Earth's two legged pestilence known as man can have cheaper (right) energy and leave a smaller footprint (that we left in the first place) all for the sake of short term benefit? Why is it that the human scourge can never bother to thouroughly vett anything before going to the build stage? And once we see it has horrific effects on native wildlife why can nobody ever care about anything but money and bottom line. Que tje neverending corporate denial and litigation. I for one am so far beyond sick of the never ending stories of yet another destructive human creation doing massive harm to wildlife and yet nobody seems to care so long as convenience is maintained. Sometimes I cant help but think the world needs to rid itself of humans as soon as possible. Weather through an epidemic, nuclear war or whatever. At least then wildlife might have a chance in a few *hundred* years or so..

Barstow, California had a solar power plant in the 1980s, which was upgraded in the 1990's to an almost completely different technology. Yet it was demolished in 2009.
I wonder how long this will last and how much we borrowed to "invest" again in this type of energy. I hope it works and is cost effective.
Too bad the reflections kill anything flying over it and I hope it doesn't cause too many plane crashes from blinding pilots.
If it worked, why was it demolished in 2009 near Barstow (Daggot)? What were the negatives and what didn't work.
All we know is that sandstorms and clouds shut it down.
