I enrolled in the Data Scientist Nanodegree program through Insight Data Science in New York. The experience was quite solid; having an experienced instructor was a definite plus, and the learning tools were very practical for completing projects. It was convenient that I only needed a browser, as Udacity handled the rest. Career services were supportive, and customer service was also on point. However, the main downside is that job placement isn't guaranteed and opportunities can be rare. Also, the high cost might be a hurdle if your family income is modest.

As a 2014 fellow at Insight Data Science in New York, I can confidently say it was a fantastic experience. The program provided two major advantages: an immediate community of smart, hardworking data scientists at leading tech firms—many of whom remain close contacts today—and a powerful reputation that opened doors across the industry, leading directly to my current role. I highly recommend applying to Insight. Even with a Physics Ph.D. from Stanford, a degree highly sought after in data science, I would have struggled to transition from academia to the private sector on my own. Insight is an invaluable resource for anyone making that leap. Bottom line: show up, put in the work, build relationships, and land the job.

I’m a fellow in the Health Data Science track at Insight Data Science in Boston, and I wanted to share my experience. The seven-week structure is quite different from traditional bootcamps since there are no formal lectures; instead, it relies heavily on small workshops and peer-to-peer collaboration. This approach worked wonders for me, as I learned just as much from my classmates as from the curriculum. The real value, however, lies in the network. Insight has strong ties to Boston-based tech companies, creating a self-reinforcing cycle where many local firms already employ Insight alumni. The pace is definitely intense. The first week is dedicated to brainstorming, data sourcing, and pitching project ideas. By week two, you’re building the project—often involving a web app—and delivering a minimum viable product. Week three involves refining that final product, while week four focuses on perfecting your presentation for company demos. Weeks five through seven are spent demoing your work to employers and prepping for interviews, with callbacks typically starting around week seven. Regarding the employment outcomes: our cohort has 18 people, and we are still two months out from the official end date. Eleven of us have already secured positions, with a twelfth very close to getting an offer. That is an incredibly fast transition from unemployment to employment. Even though the program officially ended, most of us continued using the space to study and practice. The program directors are actively advocating for us with their connections—I actually have an interview coming up this Friday. Technically, you remain a fellow until you are hired. While I’m not sure how accurate the 100% placement rate is, based on what I’ve witnessed, I can’t find anything negative to say. I’m really glad I went through the program.

Attending Insight Data Science in New York was truly a transformative experience. While the curriculum is largely self-directed rather than rigidly structured, being surrounded by such a smart and driven cohort made the material easy to grasp. The standout feature is definitely the network and access you gain—even if you could land a role without the institute, the connections alone make it worthwhile. In my opinion, no other data science bootcamp matches that level of industry access. Although the job market has tightened since the program started, and some of their traditional partner companies have scaled back recruitment, the outcomes remain stellar. I and all my close friends from the program successfully secured positions at leading companies.
